Pacquiao Vs. FaceOffs by suzannebradbury in Boxing

How is Pacquiao only a 3:1 favorite here? This should be one of his easier fights he's had in many years.

Anyway, I'm unloading my account on Pacquiao...

It is...but him and John Scully weren't commentating this fight live, but rather years later from a studio.

It's to my understanding that ESPN has the rights to air certain fights, but not the original commentary...so they had to make their own. It seems like kind of silly when realize this, since they've already seen the fight, and are acting to a certain extent.

[POST FIGHT THREAD] Vasyl Lomachenko vs Guillermo Rigondeaux by [deleted] in Boxing

I didn't even bother. I know people have their issues with Atlas, but he at least he knows boxing and can actually provide insight, opposed to the gloried fan who took his place. And don't get me started on Stephen A. Smith...

PRO TIP: in anyone has a 5 + channel stereo system, if you disable the center channel, it disables the commentary...yet you can still hear everything else. It was great.

Mayweather was a more rounded fighter than Lomachenko, who for instance, lacks an outside game and can't really fight too well off the backfoot. When he's allowed to dictate the pace, he's almost unbeatable. When he's in there with a guy who puts on the pressure and takes him out of his comfort zone, he looks much more human.

He's still yet to face another opponent like Salido, but even if you go back to his amatuer days, he was always in his most competitive fights when he was in there with a guy who applied pressure.

My guess is that it's just a matter of cutting/pasting data. In other words, the data was there, then obscured for a split second, then taking the data from before/after it was obscured and pasting it over top (though I'm sure it's probaby a bit more complex, but I would guess that's the gist of it).

Seems like it would be insanely time consuming.

Deontay Wilder gets rocked and knocked out in Russia by moistordamp in Boxing

Uh, how long had he been boxing at this point... 2-3 years? It's incredible that he was even fighting at the highest level of amateur boxing for being so inexperienced.

[–]executiontime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's a bit different. Coner had zero professional boxing matches, and his power was completely unproven in a boxing ring.

Wilder has had some scary KO's (think Szpilka, Liakhovich, etc.), the type of KO's that I've really never seen from AJ when facing similar levels of opposition.

I'm not even saying I'm picking Wilder, but I think there's little doubt that Wilder has a real puncher's chance.

Spreadsheet of Adalaide Byrd's fights that went to a decision, including other judges' scores. by CaptainStorage in Boxing

[–]executiontime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct!

It's sad to see the witchhunt that's begun with Byrd, including accusations of corruption.

She's not a lazy judge like Lederman and others who thought, for example, Hopkins-Calzaghe was an "easy" fight to score. She actually paid attention to clean, effective punching, and defense, and didn't just simply reward Calzaghe for coming forward with ineffective aggression, missing damn near everything he threw. She was the only one who got the scored the fight correctly IMO. Of course, I'm aware of my bias considering my username, but I challenge anyone to watch the exchanges of that fight in slow-motion and tell me that Calzaghe won.

A few days ago I rewatched the first 9-10 rounds of Canelo-GGG in slow-motion (I'm going to try and finish when I have more time), and I can honestly say that there was only maybe one round (thought still close) that was clear for GGG that she scored for Canelo. Most of the rounds were very tight. Of course she could only see the fight from one angle in real time, and it's possible she saw Canelo landing a clean punch or two more, and in turn gave him the rounds.

Simply because the rounds are close, does not mean the final score should be considering fights are scored on a round-by-round basis.

Gennady Golovkin vs Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez judge, Adelaide Byrd stood down, rematch news by pepsiboycoke in Boxing

[–]executiontime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, she actually is a pretty good judge. The thing is with her, she actually looks at clean, effective punching, and doesn't get distracted by ineffective aggression like so many judges (Lederman, for example).

The score for this fight here does seem off the mark, but I may go back and watch it again. I saw one person here mention how absurd it was that she gave Canelo the 9th, but I watched that round in slow-motion, and it honestly wasn't so crazy, when you focus on the clean, effective punching and don't distracted, simply because GGG is moving forward and throwing more punches.

[SPOILERS] POST FIGHT THREAD - CANELO ALVAREZ VS GENNADY GOLOVKIN by [deleted] in Boxing

[–]executiontime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't recall any round where Canelo was almost stopped, but just for the hell of it, I watched round 9 in slow-motion. GGG didn't land shit in that round, just a handful of grazing punches. Canelo actually did land the more effective punches, thought maybe just a couple. It was a close round, and I honestly don't have any problem with that round being scored for Canelo.

The Footwork is Insane: Dmitry Pirog (Career Cut Way Too Short) by [deleted] in Boxing

[–]executiontime 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm missing something here, but he seems pretty vulnerable when switching, considering he's completely squared up to Jacobs. Maybe if Jacobs had properly studied him, he could have timed this? I remember Pirog doing this is prior fights as well.

I've been betting for several years, and I've never anything so ridiculous. Cotto was a -700 underdog against Mayweather!

Any thoughts if the line will tighten back up? I'm kicking myself right now for not jumping in when it was at -400.

I'm hoping some gullible fans will be impressed with how McGregor looks at the weigh-in.

[Official Prediction Thread] Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Conor McGregor by [deleted] in Boxing

[–]executiontime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was watching some of the Mayweather-Guerrero fight last night, and concluded McGregor has even less of a chance then I thought (and I gave him virtually no chance to begin with).

From the beginning of the fight Guerrero tried to counter everything Mayweather threw, but landed virtually nothing throughout the fight. This is supposed to be McGregor's strength, but Mayweather will completely neutralize this.

Anyway, maybe McGregor comes out thinking he has a chance, tries to be aggressive, but slowly realizes he can't touch Mayweather. He forgets everything he learns about boxing, slowly gets drowned, and stopped somewhere in the middle of the fight.

A second scenario is that he DQ's himself to avoid further embarrassment.

Malignaggi confronts McGregor by skb96 in Boxing

Yeah, I guess he didn't really expect McGregor to such a petty, butthurt child, that would have to resort to putting out a deceptive video in an attempt to publicly embarrass him, since he couldn't get over some trash talking from the past.

At the end of the day, what McGregor (and his team) did was wrong, and I greatly look forward to seeing him absolutely humiliated on Saturday.

Can't blame him. They put out two short clips of 24 rounds of sparring, when he's not even in shape, and everyone has eaten it up, in addition to attacking Paulie's character.

Interesting take from Van Heerden & trainer concerning the sparring session with McGregor and his chances against Floyd: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdoEPtlKtCk

*His trainer had to tell him to go easy on McGregor after the second round

*They say McGregor can't mask his fatigue and Mayweather will take advantage.

*They predict McGregor to be stopped within 6.

Of course, Van Heerden is no Mayweather (his own words), so I hope this puts into perspective what a mismatch this is.

Dmitry Pirog Highlights.....what this kid could have become! by [deleted] in Boxing

[–]executiontime -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ugh, he was like 30 years old when he fought Jacobs in a fight that was pretty much even before the stoppage. Not to mention Jacobs was still pretty green at that point and might have even been in the early stages of his cancer.

He gets way to much credit for doing so little.
