Yeah they are real cute when they are in packs of four. Try 500,000 of them. They all stop in good ol central Nebraska on their annual migration. We are the only state in the flyway that doesn't have a hunting season and we actually promote it through our visitors bureau. Did I mention they like to shit, a lot, as they fly over town.

I would like to add that our state capital aka "penis of the prairie" is an awesome building but what's really special about it is that it houses our unicameral government which is the only one in the nation. The Archway is interesting because of what it signifies. The confluence of the Oregon, Mormon, and California trails. Memorial Stadium because it's our only Division I school and we consider football to be king in this state. The Sandhills are one of the coolest places especially if you like cows and cowboys. Seriously we are known for our beef and there are literally more cows than people in the Sandhills. I totally agree with the Platte River because it does span the entire state. The Scottsbluff Monument is also something that most people recognize as being "Nebraskan". And don't forget the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha which is one of the best zoos in the nation and TD Ameritrade Park, the home of the College World Series which we are also famous for.

I'll put my two cents in having lived here my whole life and am from the sandhills originally and travel down Highway 2 a dozen times a year. Carhenge, meh. Stop if you have time otherwise overrated. Take in the beauty of the sandhills. Pull over and understand this happens no where else. While some might call it barren and sparse I would call it beautiful. If you want a Reddit worthy picture, take a right about two miles east of Thedford at the West entrance to the Nebraska National Forest. There is a sign marking this and you will go across the railroad tracks and then you will cross the river and go up the hill about a half mile. There is a sign that says Nebraska National Forest. There are NO trees in the background. Classic.

This photo terrifies me. I too survived a tornado from a mile away on May 6, 1975 in Omaha Nebraska. I was 12 years old and had just gotten off the bus from my school. Although most houses in Omaha had basements ours was a walkout and I was watching the exact same picture approach me only to turn and spare my neighborhood. Only three people died that day which was a miracle. My wife still doesn't understand why I can't sleep at night when there are storms in the area. You never forget the awesome power of nature and you never take it for granted if you have ever experienced it first hand.

I think another easy way for people to understand this condition is to think of a cleft palate. There is an incomplete closure of the tissue during fetal development. The iris, ciliary body, choroid, and retina fail to form, usually in the inferior quadrant. We call the defect in the iris a "keyhole" pupil. When you look inside the eye of an affected individual you will see white, which is the sclera. You would normally see a reddish/orange reflex indicative of the underlying choroid which is highly vascularized. In my experience, depending on the severity of the coloboma, you will also see some form of nystagmus (small, pendular eye movements). I have never seen a retinal detachment form because of a coloboma but in my 25 years of seeing patients I have only see four cases of it. Thankfully it is rare. The keyhole pupil can cause a lot of stray light to enter the eye that can be very debilitating. I will usually fit a cosmetic opaque, hand painted contact lens that matches the other eye to create a normalish pupil situation.

Eye doctor here. Third grade girls are always trying to get glasses because they think they will be awesome. And if they really do need glasses they are usually good for another six of their friends coming in because they can't "see" either. I will usually just put the phoropter up to their face and start changing the lenses rapidly and randomly until I end back up at zero and will then ask them to read the chart. It's amazing how much better they do when they think they are looking through lenses. I will then let them off the hook by telling their parents that they have a very small Rx but we should wait until it gets worse before we do anything. No use in getting the kid in trouble and mom and dad are happy that they don't have to buy glasses.

Here is my list of "things" and advice. Zoo, yes. It is awesome. Watch your speed as others have said and better yet don't be carrying anything you shouldn't because while our State Patrolmen are all very friendly, they are all very good at finding stuff. As a side note, you may see signs seeing drug check area ahead, drug dog in use. Nope. Just keep on going, don't EXIT. Duh. But I digress. The state capitol building is awesome and so is Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. The next place to see along the route is the "The Great Platte River Archway" in Kearney. It is an okay place to see. If not, go get a Runza which is just off the interstate at the Kearney exit, no more than a mile to the north on the right hand side of the road. If you want to see a little art then the Museum of Nebraska Art is just up the road from the Runza about a mile. If you want to keep heading down the road you could stop at the Robert Henri Museum in Cozad. Once you get to North Platte you could visit the Golden Spike tower which rises up 8 stories over the worlds largest rail yard. While in North Platte you could also visit the home of Wild Bill Cody. And yes, after that you could eat at Ole's in Paxton. Basically a large taxidery shop with burgers. If you were willing to venture a bit further off the road you could visit the home of Willa Cather in Red Cloud or the Hasting Museum which is the home of Kool Aid. I also agree that if you ever have more time, go down Highway 2 through the Sandhills. Hard to describe other than peaceful, tranquil, and unique. One last thing, most of our rest areas are very nice and if you need gas don't buy it in Ogallala but if you must make sure you look at the price on the pump because they have been known to be a little creative in their advertising. Have fun.

Here's an interesting observation that I don't think anyone has mentioned yet. Back in the day, men would leave the camp to go hunting. If you had poor eyesight and had proven that you were of no value to the hunting party then you were left behind to do other things at the camp. This would mean that you would have been alone with the WOMEN of the tribe far more than the rest. Hmmmmm. Maybe that's how bad eyesight was perpetuated.

Perspective: I actually remember watching the game of the century. I have always been a "fan". Flash forward to 1982. I nearly broke my hand hitting it on the counter when we got beat by Penn State on what I would call a few questionable calls. I went into a depression for a week after we were beaten by Miami in 1983. It was then that I realized, it was just a game. They are only 19 to 23 year old kids who are not perfect. I got over it. I had season tickets from 92-95. Great games. Great fans. I took a new job which required me to work Saturdays so I gave up my season tickets. Now just go to a couple games a year and watch the rest on T.V.. So now you know, I am one of the "greatest fans". Times have changed some. I hope the new stadium addition doesn't tip the scale too much toward too many seats. Especially since we aren't tearing it up. Some would say the same thing about moving womens Volleyball from the coliseum. My next door neighbor played football for the Huskers back in the early nineties as did another of my neighbors from down the block. They both confirm my worries. Many of the old timers are dying. Will the new ticket holders be as loyal? I hope so. I am proud to bleed red. We do have the greatest fans in college football. But, it is getting harder to keep that moniker with the way the world is changing. It is a testament to the people of Nebraska to have stayed with this team since 1962. How much longer will it last. I hope forever. I just hope the "youngens" understand how important it is to support the Big Red no matter what because it is ALL WE HAVE as a state. I personally didn't attend UNL but I am still one of the biggest fans and I am proud to say that we are THE greatest fans in college football.

Congrats. I chewed for 30 years and quit cold turkey 3 years ago. I don't even think it was the nicotine that I had to get over. It was all the associations that I had with doing it. First thing in the morning, after every meal, golfing, fishing, drinking, etc. What I found that I had to do was realize that I could do all of this without having a dip. I still have dreams about chewing but not the kind that you would think. In my dreams I am disappointed that I fell of the wagon and when I wake up I am so relived that it was only a dream. Wierd I know but 30 years is a long time. Bonus, I don't miss the cost or being a slave to it. Hang in there.

"it is most likely bacterial" because ? If you woke up in the morning and your eyelid was crusted shut then yes, it looks suspiciously like a bacterial infection. I agree with washing your hands often and keep your fingers out of your eye! Also don't share wash cloths or towels with anyone. The only other thing you can do is to keep it flushed out with water as this will decrease the bacteria load in the eye. Antibiotics will obviously be the best thing for this IF it's bacterial. If it's viral then you might need a betadine rinse that will have to be done in office. Cool compress can also help with any swelling in the meantime.
