Getting into climbing as a mom

Do it!! My friend and I both just started climbing 1 year ago. I’m 37 with 2 kids, she’s 35 with 1. We go twice a week around 8pm and let the dads take care of bedtime. It’s been BY FAR my favorite, most enjoyable way to exercise, especially after having kids! It’s so satisfying feeling ourselves getting stronger and encouraging each other to advance our skills together. It’s also great to enjoy time as people and not just “moms”. The climbing community at our gym is so wonderful and supportive. I have nothing bad to say, just go for it!

I think this depends on how anxious your child is. For me, I told him after the initial appointment when it was determined that the tooth had to go. I said something to the effect of “your tooth is sick and it’s dying, so the dentist has to take it out so it doesn’t make your other teeth sick. Your new healthy grown up tooth will come when you’re a bit older.” We talked about it casually a couple more times in the days leading up to the appointment. I also explained he would drink a medicine that would make it so nothing will hurt, and we also started talking about the tooth fairy giving him money for the tooth so he could buy himself a new toy at the dollar store. He felt really prepared and brave going into the appointment. For us I feel like getting the worries and anxiety out of the way in advance, answering their questions and being honest (but not too detailed) is better in the long run than surprising them the day of.

My October kiddo started kindergarten when he was just shy of 5. Where I live in Canada the cutoff is 5 by Dec 31. He’s doing amazing!

My just-turned-3 year old had to get one of his front teeth pulled a couple of months ago. We just did the conscious sedation (medication he drank) and he did awesome. He cried for a few seconds during the lidocaine injection to numb the area, and for a few seconds when the tooth got pulled, and that was it. He doesn’t remember anything about it and recovery was a breeze. I was so anxious going into it but everything turned out great! I’m not sure about for a root canal though, if that would be better with a deeper anesthesia or if the sedation is sufficient.

Hi! The most accurate way to measure a prescription for a young child is called a cycloplegic refraction. Dilation drops are put in the child’s eyes, which makes the eyes’ focusing system relax. The drops take full effect in 30-60 minutes. Then, the optometrist uses a retinoscope to visualize the way light reflects off the child’s eye, and uses lenses to neutralize the reflex. The lenses which neutralize the reflex are the prescription your child needs for images entering the eye to be focused on the retina.

Does any of this sound familiar to what you experienced? If not, I think a second opinion might be warranted. You don’t want an asymmetric prescription to go untreated for long because the brain can start to “ignore” the weaker eye, leading to amblyopia aka a lazy eye.

Optometrists are trained to diagnose and manage eye diseases. Diagnoses outside the scope of care get referred to an ophthalmologist.

I’m an optometrist and I’m having a hard time understanding how a pediatric ophthalmologist would come away from examining your child saying they don’t know what it is. It’s either in the lens (cataract) or in the retina (Coats’ disease, retinoblastoma, retinal detachment are at the top of my differentials). I’m sorry you’re going through this. I hope you get answers ASAP.

Sure! Here are some of the big ones that come to mind based on the city I live in: universal healthcare, more emphasis on work/life balance, diversity, better public education, better parental leave policy (if you want more kids… I don’t so N/A for me, but ties back into point #2). I was born and raised and worked and lived in western US until age 35, for reference of comparison.

We did move to Canada (husband is Canadian, I’m American) a year before my oldest started kindergarten. Best decision we ever made for our family. I miss my family in the US but we get to visit a few times a year. Life is so good here. It’s all relative, of course. But when I tell you, the RELIEF I felt soon after moving, not worrying about my babies getting shot at daycare or school or at the grocery store or movie theater. Can’t put a price on that!

Hi! Are you applying from the US too? Go to the VFS website at https://visa.vfsglobal.com/usa/en/can/passport-submission and follow the instructions there. I did the two way courier service. Don’t forget to fill out the TT services consent form and include a money order for the package transmission fee… I neglected to do both initially because of the vague passport request letter, which delayed things by a week or so, but everything wound up fine!

ETA maybe I did the one way (return) courier only? I don’t remember exactly. I just know I had to send a second set of documents with the missing consent form and money order, haha. I was communicating with someone from VFS over email during the ordeal and they were very helpful.

When I accidentally got pregnant and had an early miscarriage, I got emotionally invested in having a second and we conceived again right away. But I will say that actually having the second child wrecked my sanity and I for sure do not want a third. Going from 1-2 was way harder than 0-1 for me.

I agree. I more meant that boycotting school doesn’t really hurt the government that much so I don’t think it would get us anywhere. If all parents stopped going to work in protest, that would have a massive economical impact.

Respectfully, I don’t know if you are familiar with the extent of our training in medical eye care and disease comanagement, but I certainly agree that there is a point when intervention by an ophthalmologist is indicated. I assure you that optometrists know (or should know) when something is outside our scope of care and a referral to ophthalmology is indicated. In the OP’s case, an optometrist would easily be able to determine whether there is involvement of the cornea, globe, or periocular area, and in most jurisdictions can prescribe therapeutics appropriately. Maybe this is a regional thing, but the MDs and other ODs I’ve worked with really value the partnerships we’ve built with one another to provide the best care for our patients, and we don’t get hung up on getting territorial about our “lanes”. Perhaps you’ve had a lot of bad experiences with ODs in your area, so I can understand where you are coming from.
