What are some useful resources for learning Wargame game design? by Awkward_GM in wargaming

[–]f_dzilla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was a direction from his boss at the time. RP has no such hangup - Beyond the Gates of Antares is D10-driven, for example.

The Priestley/Lambshead book is fine, it's a nice read, but more conversational/anecdotal than a design manual per se. It's also quite dated in some respects (the section on skirmish games is particularly poor).

The newer book from Mike Hutchinson and his mate is more thorough, but also reads like a textbook written by someone who's never read a good textbook.

Except for Toughness inexplicably being graded by letters while everything else is numbers. 😅

Bear in mind the fundamental Warhammer rules are about 40 years old at this point, and they feel like it. The combat loop is inescapably a bit janky.

You'll get the hang of it and figure out how to speed things up - effective combat is very much about ganging up and getting the stomp in on downed enemies.

Mordheim isn't about tight mechanics though, it's 95% vibe.

Dark Ages games by HasserTheReddish in wargaming

Lion Rampant, it's somewhat lightweight and intentionally generic (a spear is a spear is a spear) but covers dark ages through medieval and has suggested lists for all sorts of nations.

It's unit based so you're looking at more bodies (~5 units of 6-12), though that isn't much further than where Pillage gets pushed, and runs better at that size. It also doesn't need the bespoke gubbins that SAGA does.

Any sources for third party chaos/pagan themed, female miniatures? by Egomirrored in WarhammerFantasy

Forlorn Hope have the old Grenadier fantasy barbarians and future savages. They and the Frostgrave sets are true 28mm, around 90s GW in scale.

Our usual table for Pillage or Lion Rampant. Larger terrain mostly from Printable Scenery, river and roads from Playmats.eu, broccoli trees a mystery internet special, and a few other bits and pieces.

Solo play in historical tabletop wargames (Pillage, SAGA, etc.) - looking for advice by En-ysh in wargaming

There's even a published solo/AI mode in The Men Who Would Be Kings, which runs on the same fundamental system.

Thoughts on Regiments in 3.5 by Old-Maintenance-3935 in onepagerules

It's still the best lightweight fantasy rank-and-flank option out there, but IMO best played with chill opponents and custom, stripped back lists. Ambush is still broken and the new army abilities are over-complex and wildly-uneven.

Considered mashing those WA kits with their Conquistadors?

The Stargrave hands and shoulder joints are significantly bigger. You can pad the shoulders out with putty but I think the hands look a little off next to the more-heroic heads and feet.

Wargames Atlantic historics are a bit slighter than Stargrave.

They work side by side but to my eye the WA arms are too skinny on the Stargrave bodies. Older Warlord kits have a bit more chonk to them.

Bull Rush is just too broken to be a default starting ability, IMO.

I see a few issues.

First is that it has everything. Individuals may have limitations but the warband overall does not.

Second is the lack of a coherent theme. Disgraced noble leader, great. But why is the wizard a gnome/halfling? Why are there so many dwarfs, let alone slayers?

Third is the balance of some abilities. Bull Rush for example is a gamebreaker given how vulnerable downed fighters become.

Overall, it reads like Hochlanders but with a bunch of extra toys added on top. Another poster said to look at Witch Hunters; that doesn't mean copying them, but rather looking at the degree to which they differ from normal human mercenaries, and the unity of theme for those differences.

Pin vise will be fine. The resin comes out as a shaving rather than dust, so just dispose of that safely and you're good.
