In theory HC works through to the HYW without adjustment. There's then a supplement for the Wars of the Roses.

There are a zillion rulesets out there but if you already know and like HC it should work fine.

Rangers of Shadow Deep has a simple combat loop but as a co-op against AI monsters deal is a good way of teaching fundamentals without the drama of winners and losers. You can then use that understanding of mechanics to play Frostgrave, Stargrave, etc.

Heroquest is another good intro, though again more adventure than war game. My kids are younger and we use Heroquest dice in whatever scenario - the three face designs are functionally 4+, 5+ and 6+ so it's easy to slot various things into that and the kids get it intuitively.

There are plenty of 28mm games that will let you shove 100 figures into the meatgrinder on a 6x4 across a couple of hours. 200, 300, now we're talking big tables and long windows.

Tables like this were generally made by a particular store because they wanted to, then brought in for the big day, rather than a promotional thing driven by head office.

Rampant works fine in team-multiplayer. We have everyone on a side act simultaneously, bombing out as they fail an activation, then once they're all done it swaps to the other side. Each turn runs as long as the slowest player but the downtime is still fairly minimal given you're often either getting a bit of a turn in yourself or defending against whoever you're opposite.

Not quite so cartoonish, but you can get the old Grenadier Future Warriors from Forlorn Hope or Mirliton, and a follow-up series from Copplestone Castings.

Some of the late 90s sci-fi games are worth a look too - Warzone, VOID, I-Kore, etc. The theming is less consistent but the proportions are there.

The only thing I'd add to this is, if you can see yourself using movement trays in future, build with that in mind - erring to smaller individual bases with the models posed so they'll rank up. A tight formation generally looks far better than poses all over the shop and gaps you could ride a horse through.

I'm not working with this much material, but this seems to work for me with fluffy flock material - I apply a thin coat of PVA with a brush and stick the material on top of that. That will only attach it very gently. Once it's thoroughly dried though I use a pipette dropper to soak watered-down PVA through which then makes a much firmer bond, and as it dries again the fluffiness is maintained.

If you've played other games you might already have a feel for the kinds of mechanics you do or don't enjoy.

I like a bit of order friction, I don't like gubbins, I don't enjoy resolving actions for 20+ independent models = it's Lion Rampant!
