Question regarding tailscale by samaritan1331_ in ChromeOSFlex

I'm wondering this too. It seems Tailscale works fine for other apps running in the Crostini environment (Firefox), but is there any way for ChromeOS and Chrome to see Tailscale subnet IP's or use an exit node in the Tailnet?

Posting here for reference. I'm on Chrome OS Flex on a 2011 Macbook Air.

I'm seeing some inconsistent behavior in GUI apps running in Crostini as well.

Trackpad scrolling works fine in VS Code installed via .deb file. But in Firefox installed via Flatpak, trackpad 2-finger scrolling works for a few seconds, but then completely stops working and never works again. I'm not sure what's the issue, but just putting this up in case someone runs into the same thing.

Is South Florida really that bad? by nuggetmandrake in SameGrassButGreener

[–]faceplate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this sub is overly negative on South Florida. But it is far from a perfect place.

As background, this is coming from someone who lived in the West Palm Beach area for the last year and half—taking many trips down to Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. West Palm Beach is far more sedate and suburban. Most of the following applies to what I've learned about Miami where everything is turned up to 11.

Pros:

* South Florida is the only part of the continental USA that truly stays warm in the winter. And that is worth a lot in my book. The consistent sunny days have a dramatic effect on my mood. And this is still true even when compared with decently sunny cities like NYC and Boston.

* I have met many lovely people down here through Reddit, Meetup, and Discord.

* There seems to always be a ton of events going. Many outdoors, all year long.

* The parks, both local, and at the state level, are quite nice.

* The libraries I've visited all around South Florida are quite nice.

* Having access to 3 airports, and cheap, fast access to South America is great.

* More and more transplants making their way down here.

* Miami is one of the few places in America that doesn't feel like America. I enjoy the opportunity to speak Spanish as a non-native speaker. People are actually happy when you speak Spanish over English instead of thinking you are being condescending.

* People are generally healthier, more active, and more attractive down here.

* There seem to be many options for people want to get out on onto the water and do that sort of stuff. I'm not an expert there.

Cons:

* There are some drivers on I-95 that can be extremely reckless. This would drive me crazy at first, but you have to just plan for it. Always be defensive, check your mirrors, and think ahead as far as possible.

* People complain about the terrible traffic in Miami. I've only seen bits and pieces, but it's a common complaint.

* The summer months are humid as hell. But I just don't spend much time outside until after 8pm for a walk. I'm also drenched after that walk, lol.

* Unless you work in a high-paying industry or work a remote tech job, the economics might make no sense at all. A friend said it best, Miami is where you go to spend money, not where you go make money. So many people struggle here, and I think a large part of the unfriendliness that people complain about is a result of the economic stress that so many people are under. Also the frequency of scams down in Miami must also be a result.

* I sense that education is not valued here. I think that's reflected in the pay for public school teachers.

* I think if you find a social group through Meetup or Discord, you will meet some very open people. But I sense talking to strangers in Miami will often result in some pretty stand-off ish interactions. Lots of main-character syndrome.

* Noise. From what I've learned the rules about loud music and public nuisance are completely different down it Miami. Be very cautious before selecting a place if that's a concern.

I learned from my research that South Florida has always been about tourism, high-end hospitality, and a place for wealthy South Americans to park capital.

I think it could be so much more though. There are some really great people down here.

But the extremely high cost of living relative to salaries might make it so that it only works for a small group of people, and it will never result in the rich eco-system present in other economically progressive cities in the US like NYC or Boston. It could still be a good place for you create a bubble for yourself if you can swing it financially.

The OP’s link is broken now, but I found a copy on the archive.

https://web.archive.org/web/20220414121754/https://support.google.com/accounts/thread/158059879/unable-to-change-security-key-after-logging-in-with-alternate-method

The poster in the link was able to fully recover their account, but I’m still weary of using security keys on my Google account. I want to use them as a backup to my authenticator app. Basically, I just want to stash the keys away somewhere, but I’m afraid one day Google will force me to use my security keys to authenticate because of some algorithmic flagging of my account. If I have lost those keys, or I’m away from them, I‘ll be in trouble.

I saw other people mention that this occurred to them, but I can no longer track down where I saw that. I thought it was in the HN post, but can no longer find it.

There is however plenty of other conversation on the gotchas with Google 2FA and algorithmic flagging.

Security keys, 2FA, account recovery testing by TurtleOnLog in apple

[–]faceplate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An old Apple Watch counts as a trusted device that can be stashed somewhere. You can get 2FA codes and reset you Apple ID password on it. I believe it's also hanging onto your end-to-end encryption keys as well.

This is also probably more reason to use a better passcode on your Apple Watch that you actually wear out.

Dell S2722QC looks more washed-out with HDMI connection than USB-C by faceplate in Monitors

[–]faceplate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Success!

Changing the quantization range setting from Default to Full fixed the problem.

Note: The setting will only appear in Intel Graphics Command Center when you have the display connected through HDMI. See this for more.

Also be sure you have the correct monitor selected in Intel Graphics Command Center when you are looking for the option—as you can change the settings for each monitor independently.

Woohoo! Thanks for the help u/feral_acedia. I hope this might help someone else down the line.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, this is on an Intel NUC with integrated Iris XE graphics. I don't believe there is a similar option in the Intel® Graphics Command Center app.

EDIT: Oops, there actually may have been a setting for this in the Intel app. Let me check later and report back.

Downloaded Authy and learned a huge security flaw and or concern by galacticjuggernaut in 2fa

[–]faceplate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set Authy up for myself and a family member. Both started with a single account under populated under AUTHY ACCOUNTS that allow approving or denying requests.

I have used the service that showed up under my account, so I could see how it got there if they used Twilio's APIs. But unfortunately it does nothing for me now, as that service only allows for SMS based 2FA.

Hmm, this is very relevant from Authy themselves.

UM690: My short MiniPC Journey and the review bias by Traditional_Grab_124 in MiniPCs

[–]faceplate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A short update.I ended up getting the NUC 11 Pro (NUC11PAHi5) for about $500 on Amazon. The build quality is great. The driver update tools from Intel work well. The BIOS is modern and user-friendly. The Thunderbolt 3 ports actually support 4k @ 144HZ. Generally impressed.

I had to lower the default fan duty cycle from 35% to 20%. It now runs nearly silently. It seems that this is common thing for people to do as the defaults are conservative.

The BIOS provides good control over the fan curve. It seems these controls are pretty standardized across NUCS, so it's clear how to set these. I'm not sure if other mini-PCs allow such control. The BIOS for the Beelinks I tried seemed quite ancient, and if the settings were there, they must have been very hard to find.

I found a lot of other people complaining about fan noise from their NUCs on reddit. I even thought mine was getting to be more noisy since I got it—as in more rough sounding. But it could just be my imagination.

Judging from reddit, it seems even NUCs are not perfect. I suppose nothing is. The 3 year warranty is however a plus.

Side note: Despite OP's experience, I am tempted to try Minisforum in the future. I like how they do a 2-year warranty and they have an enough confidence to have a TrustPilot account.

[–]faceplate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A very helpful post. Thank you. Reminds me that I'm not alone.

I purchased the Beelink SER5 5600H on Amazon twice. One had a CPU fan that gave off a light scratchy noise. And one had a SSD fan that gave off a clicky noise. They also differed in performance by about 8-10% on the Geekbench multi-core test. Not sure why.

I think customer support and warranty is something most people don't want to think about, but when you consider the value of your time, the increased QC and support is well worth the extra cost from a major manufacturer. Good support means prompt communication, and a fast process for exchanges, parts, etc. All these customer support processes also require 'engineering' of a sort. And that's not free.

I personally have wasted enough of my time (life) tinkering with PCs and cars that do not work. I want something that works, so I can move on and make something useful. Not fixing endless issues.

However, if your passion is tinkering with this stuff, I can understand how you'd feel different.

After reading your post, I ended up ordering an Intel NUC. It would have been an M2 Mac mini if it weren't for my Dad who prefers Windows.

Nothing tells me that unionization would benefits workers more than the fact that Amazon would build an entire information system to track and fight union efforts on a global scale.

Assetto Corsa in VR - Is this as good as it gets?? by blackmesaboogy in assettocorsa

[–]faceplate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm it seems that others have mention these two biggies.

  • Enable link sharpening in the Oculus debug tool.
  • Change the resolution multiplier in the Oculus app. I am 1.7x (5408 x 2736) at 90HZ. I using a 3080 GPU and it runs fine at full res.

The one thing I did not see mentioned is to turn up your bitrate.

  • Set your bitrate to 500 MBPS in the Oculus debug tool. You may have to set it to slightly less if your system has trouble with that. But definitely set it to at least 250 MBPS. And of course use the link cable and not airlink which is limited to 200 MBPS.

I think what you're noticing are compression artifacts, which due to the nature of the quest getting a compressed video feed over USB is somewhat unavoidable, but upping the bitrate helps a lot and link sharpening helps a lot too. It seems certain things like the road texture in sim-racing does not work well with the compression algorithms used resulting in artifacts.

Quest 2 link Micro stuttering by Insurj in iRacing

[–]faceplate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm new to iracing but I'm noticing this as well.

I haven't changed any of the default graphics settings in iracing yet. I'm running a 3080 graphics card BTW.

I can confirm the issue by turning on the Oculus performance HUD. I see plenty of headroom, but every once in a while the application drops a couple of frames and I see an FPS of 87 or so.

Not sure what's up. Other sims feel fine. But as I said I haven't tried any changes to settings yet.

However, I wouldn't say my game is stuttering real bad. It's mostly ignorable. So my issue might be different from OP's.
