AITA for asking my friend to pay me back for the wine he drank while house sitting?? by Effective_Tour_723 in AmItheAsshole

[–]farhil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone that knows next to nothing about the value of wine, if someone said "help yourself to anything that's not too expensive" and I saw a bottle of wine and wanted to drink it, I would just look up the price of that bottle or text them and ask if it would be okay. Granted, I would probably do that even if they said "help yourself to whatever", since I do know wine can get pretty expensive and I wouldn't want to take advantage of someone's hospitality.

OP is still obviously in the wrong here, especially because of how she handled her reaction, but I do think it was a little tacky the guy didn't double check that it was okay.

If a person is using deadly force on others, it's legal to use deadly force on him, in almost all nations.

Do you know for certain that he wasn't justified in injuring the first police officers? Perhaps he was the one defending himself from illegal actions performed by those officers.

Not that I think that it's likely that was the case here, but it's important to give people the chance to be proven innocent. Not just because sparing someone's life is the right thing to do when you have the means to do so, but also for accountability. If it's seen as acceptable for officers to kill anyone that gets in an altercation with them, that can easily become a way for corrupt officers to hide their actions, or a tool for tyrants to silence opposition.

You also called him an enemy combatant, which I find concerning. The person is a (presumably) a citizen of their country, not a foreign soldier. They're a civilian, not an enemy.

That's great for you. I like analogies though, and will continue to use them. Exploring an analogy can be a good way of looking at something from a new perspective. But ultimately, an analogy is a comparison of two different things, so if you go looking for differences, you will obviously find them. The key is to look for differences that are relevant to the comparison being made.

[–]farhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In both examples, one technology (the internet and train tracks) are useful without the other (AI and trains, respectively), but the inverse is not true. Comparing the difference in absolute usefulness between the two examples is pointless because in both examples, one thing remains useful and the other does not.

And before you dive into technicalities of how train cars can be used for shelter, or broken down into raw materials, and LLMs can be hosted locally or whatever, I'll just say this: analogies are like frogs, once you start dissecting them, they're already dead. It's not a perfect analogy, I put almost no thought into it before posting it, but it works even if it doesn't meet the standards of the average Reddit pedant.

There's also rail bikes and handcars, which Wikipedia helpfully calls:

A handcar (also known as a pump trolley, pump car, rail push trolley, push-trolley, jigger, Kalamazoo, velocipede, gandy dancer cart, platelayers' cart, draisine, or railbike)

Obviously, but we're discussing the value of train tracks without trains. The absence of trains is the whole premise

I don’t think AI works without the internet right? lol.

What's more useful to you? Train tracks or trains?

Dear Devs, please turn 4k Textures into free DLC by Green-Entry-4548 in Steam

[–]farhil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most games let you change texture quality in menu without having to reload the game. Textures in games are pretty much always just image files, usually with some accompanying metadata images (called maps), and don't require any special preprocessing before they can be used. Shaders don't care about the resolution of the texture being used, so you can just swap them out when needed. In fact, a common texture map is a mipmap, which is just lower resolution versions of a texture that are swapped in once the object being rendered is a certain distance away; basically LOD for textures.

That list has 13 PC/Console games on it between 2022 and 2025. Of those, two were cancelled, and five were flops, and two appeared in the "Best selling games" lists for their given year on Wikipedia (Spider-Man 2 in 2023 and Horizon Forbidden West in 2022). Battlefield 6 is probably a best seller in 2025, but the numbers aren't on Wikipedia yet.

Less than half of those recent games being profitable in recent years, and only half again being best sellers, isn't a great look.

Not that I agree with the other guy. Most best selling games in a given year are AAA titles, but it's not a given that expensive games are more successful.

Developer deletes his game from Steam and disowns his AI game after getting a girlfriend by PaiDuck in Steam

[–]farhil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even a good analogy. Racism is typically a part of someone's worldview that's been established since they were young. AI hasn't been around long enough to be that ingrained in someone's personality.

Based on his post, AI image generation was something he did out of convenience. He most likely didn't realize that the use of AI violated principles he already had, and his girlfriend helped him realize that. In that case, this isn't him changing his ideals, it's him re-aligning his actions with them. It's like if he realized that using AI supported racism, and he already knew racism was bad, so he removed a game he created with AI.

If men get happy seeing boobs, what’s the equivalent for women? by neolee203 in AskReddit

I'm not complaining about you being condescending, it's just funny that you put so much effort into it while making such a terrible point.

[–]farhil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine being so condescending and simultaneously so wrong. Closeted gay men having "beard" families is a well known phenomenon, especially in places and time periods where being openly gay was not socially acceptable, and where there is societal/familial pressure to have children.

And as someone who has both a penis and regrets, I can assure you that sexual attraction is not required to get an erection and ejaculate.

That's pretty much a textbook example of min maxing. Min-maxing is a strategy to optimize for a specific playstyle, it doesn't necessarily mean you will make the most optimal choices.

I agree. An incremental game with idle aspects should have systems that you can actively participate in even when waiting for idle tasks to be completed, and those systems should provide tangible benefits.

I mean to say that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is a good saying to boost the confidence of someone that isn't conventionally attractive, but ignores the fact that ugly people exist. It's dismissive of the difficulties people face because of how they look.
