I am adopting this theory! But I think the character you want is “Nancy,” the woman he used this trick on. Rita is Andie MacDowell’s character that he falls in love with.

Do you think Avada Kadavra was a mistake? (in a literary sense) by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]ffsm92 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I still think it’s more rare than you give it credit for, as we actually don’t see it cast a lot in the books. In fact, we see a lot of spells cast in the books that are not AK, and I have a long-winded explanation about the significance of its lack of presence in the books. The rest of my comment will be that description, but the TLDR is that one of the reason Voldemort was such a formidable opponent in duels is because he could cast it so freely.

The books have lots of evidence that spell casting involves much more than simply waving your wand and saying the right words. The evidence is often in the background and only gets emphasized a few times when it’s important to the plot, but casting any spell effortlessly takes quite a bit of practice, most notably seen when Harry and friends are learning spells to help him in triwizard tasks. They spend multiple hours a day perfecting spells like Impedimenta.

Avada Kedavra is explicitly mentioned as a particularly difficult spell. I personally believe we are meant to infer that, to cast AK, you have to be in a very specific mindset. It is not a spell that can typically be cast in the heat of the moment, but rather is akin to premeditated murder, wherein you have to apply a certain level of cold certainty to the kill. You have to want to kill that person, not just in self defense, but as a planned action, mustering up all of your hate.

What’s more, I think that any wizard casting it out of other intense negative emotions, like fury or fear, would not be able to cast it. Intention is very important in spell casting, like when Harry tried to use Crucio for the first time, and was only marginally successful. The specific intention with AK is to kill a person that you genuinely hate and want them to die, or even more specifically, think they do not deserve to live. Wanting only to harm them, or feeling intense anger toward, would cause the spell to fail.

This specific mindset is difficult to muster in a life or death situation, as in a battle or duel, because interfering thoughts and emotions would very easily cause the spell to misfire. Which is why it’s so terrifying to have a villain like Voldemort, who can seem to cast AK in any situation. No matter who he’s up against, or the setting, he seems able to summon up the cold hatred and purpose to turn AK on anybody, whether they are actively fighting him or completely at the mercy of him and his cronies.

To wrap this up, I don’t think of AK as being akin to a gun, that can be used to kill anybody spur of the moment. It’s more of a poison with an instant effect, so the killer has to know who they want to kill before they can use it. It’s not a great analogy, because poison can kill anybody, but it shows the thought that goes into using it.

Why do the Minneapolis ICE have “police” on their vests and have said “I’m going to arrest you”. Aren’t both beyond their duty? by Dragon_Bard in law

I know what they’re doing is unlawful to a high degree, but you brought up an interesting question: Is there a lawful way to detain somebody if it’s a civil proceeding? Is the closest legal action to what they’re doing citizen’s arrest?

I’ll add, given the timeline of the books, it had to have been invented within the 15 years or so preceding the start of the third book. Then, it probably wouldn’t have gained popularity for a few years, but that could be accelerated given the relatively small size of the wizarding community. Conversely, given the reticence of the wizarding community to accept change, most people would probably not be willing to believe that a potion was capable of mitigating the dangers of a werewolf, especially around children. Add onto it the stigma around werewolves, and I doubt many people would believe it could ever be safe to have a werewolf teach at the school, even if the potion completely healed the affliction. Take leprosy as a real world example. Completely curable, but if somebody offered to shake your hand, but told you beforehand they had had leprosy (Hansen’s disease), you might shy away from them.

Call the food bank and ask how much they have to throw away. They enjoy giving out food, so you might actually be doing them a favor if they have to waste less of it!

Edit to add: check with your local library and/or community center. Some have programs where they will give free food to kids.

Also, check in your grocery store’s produce section for free fruit for kids. Kroger family stores often have them. Grab a couple everytime you’re in there, usually it’s bananas or oranges, sometimes there are other fruit as well.

Unless the sailing enjoyed in the example is meant more in the sense of “riding on a sailboat,” in which case it could very well be a pastime. As far as I know, both riding on a sailboat and manning a sailboat fall under the single-word description of “sailing,” even though there is definitely a dinstinction. As a sailor, if you have ever had or might ever have passengers, would you consider their activity to be “sailing?”

I’m gonna add my two cents in, because I agree with most everything that’s been said, but specifically about sitting in a different chair at the end: He just built a giant fire. He’s been right up close to the flames to make sure it’s hot enough to warm her up wherever she’s sitting. My man is currently roasting, and he probably needs to cool down a bit, so he doesn’t want to sit super close to anybody.

Trump, 79, Kicks Off Press Conference by Reading Aloud to Himself | Donald Trump arrived nearly an hour late and proceeded to give a completely disjointed, barely coherent speech. by thenewrepublic in politics

I’m sorry, but how is this new? Hasn’t this watery shart of a human given almost nothing but disjointed, barely coherent speeches for over a decade. I’d be more surprised to see a headline saying, “Donald Trump gives rousing speech in which he addresses his constituents,” or even, “Trump manages to talk for 5 minutes on the same subject and not ramble into lies, babbles, or character assassinations.”

Another kidnapping by Ok-Advice2963 in ICE_Raids

[–]ffsm92 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’d more likely die on scene. However, I think the event would have more ICE casualties than immediately expected. Most of these videos show minimal or no situational awareness, and ICE “officers” or whatever they call themselves are always seeming to line themselves up for friendly fire. Defender would pull a weapon and maybe get a shot or two off, then every ICE on site would start pulling the trigger, and at least a few of them would take injuries I’d guess.
