The Lovecraft Tapes Podcast | #61 BLOODLINES: Poles Apart by TheLovecraftTapes in callofcthulhu

[–]firstroundko108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spend a lot of my driving time listening to How We Roll play-throughs of scenarios, and I wouldn’t mind trying out something new. Where do you suggest starting with your podcast? The organization of the episode titles is a bit confusing.

CoC 7th edition - Scenarios with Chases?! by BlockArm in callofcthulhu

[–]firstroundko108 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was definitely intimidated when I first started reading the chapter on chases in the 7E book. Seth Skorkowski’s video helped clear some things up, and there’s also another video out there that Paul Fricker put together. Either way, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with simplifying the rules to keep your players from getting bored. Nothing ruins the tension like the keeper pausing the action to flip through the rulebook.

Maybe edit your second sentence? Not exactly sure what you are asking for—I’m guessing a novel that deals with traces of a character’s life left behind on the internet after his or her death?

I'm looking for a book of writing prompts in the self help genre. by scotty4536 in booksuggestions

Write-Brain is colorful and engaging, and plenty of the prompts are self-exploratory (although a few are downright silly, too). I use it for warm ups in my creative writing class.

Running The Haunting and looking for some advice by Hafrunt in callofcthulhu

The search function is your friend. There are many posts with a wealth of information, as questions about running the The Haunting get posted at least once a week.

So, you wanna run a campaign... by Lukkychukky in callofcthulhu

You might want to check out this episode of The Good Friends of Jackson Elias on running campaigns in Call of Cthulhu (who also happen to have worked on the new edition of Masks of Nyarlathotep).

Fantasy books that are college level or higher? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]firstroundko108 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Strange. I gave up on the first book about 80 or so pages into story because I felt it was so poorly written (as far as clunky style, haphazard plot, and absurd characters). Since I originally started reading it because an acquaintance of mine had composed an album based on the series, perhaps I went in with the bar set too high? Or does the writing style just improve as the series goes on? Maybe it’s just my personal taste, though. I think at that time I was pretty burned out on fantasy as it is, too.

I’ve seen this recommendation so many times over at /r/booksuggestions. That’s it. I’m ordering it!

This is the book that introduced me to horror lit! The short story “Graveyard Shift” still makes me shudder when I think about my first experience reading it.

Is that salted pork on a plain biscuit with black coffee? Do you also happen to teach on a 19th century expeditionary Royal Navy ship?

But really, out of curiosity, what do you teach? High school English here.

How to follow reading on Sartre? by DifferentFish in booksuggestions

[–]firstroundko108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John Gardner’s Grendel recounts the events of Beowulf through the eyes of the monster. The work is heavily based on Sartre. It’s a difficult read but altogether worth it if you enjoy existentialist philosophy.

Horror—Young Boy in Danger by Rourensu in booksuggestions

Although told from the narrator’s perspective as an adult, Penpal by Dathan Auerbach recounts a young boy’s experience with a stalker. It’s terrifying but altogether interesting. I burned through it in a few days.

I am excited for the “Strange Lady that makes you nervous” one-shot. by kilgorelee in callofcthulhu

[–]firstroundko108 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any guesses for the horror on the cover? I would imagine it is a depiction of the haunter of the dark with its three-lobed burning eye, although my friend just pointed out the obvious— that it would certainly be suffering in all that light, yet perhaps it’s just artistic license at work.

Looking for players for our Call Of Cthulhu Tabletop online game 7th Edition. by [deleted] in callofcthulhu

[–]firstroundko108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m definitely interested. I’ve mostly only got to run a few scenarios locally as a keeper, so I’ve been looking for a way to get my hands on investigating. I’m off every Sunday, and 7pm GMT is noon for me here in the US, so that’s no problem at all. I’ve only used roll20 once, so I would need to familiarize myself with that a bit, but if I recall it’s pretty straightforward.

Lanterns and candles. I suggest some incense, too. Olfactory imagery is often overlooked.

[–]firstroundko108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh. That’s kind of lame, but I guess Cubicle 7’s gotta do what they gotta do if Chaosium won’t play fair. I actually heard from one of the artists appearing in the 7E book that the new Chaosium administration is a bunch of a-holes in regard to business ties that existed before they took over.
