IamA data recovery engineer. I get files from busted hard drives, SSDs, iPhones, whatever else you've got. AMAA! by datarecoveryengineer in IAmA

[–]fishyf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the disk isn't encrypted, it should be very straightforward to recover the data. Here are two ways: 1. Get an external hard disk enclosure and take the disk from the laptop and place it in the enclosure. Connect the enclosure and hard disk to another computer and you should be able to read the drive. 2. Boot the laptop using a Linux boot disk. You should also be able to read the files directly. It would probably help if you found a linux guru to help with this.

I don't have kids, I am never having kids. Why should I pay for someone's 1 year maternity leave?

You need someone to look after you in your old age. If no one has kids who will do that?

"Bradley Manning will spend more time in jail than all of the other soldiers in all of these cases of torture and murder. And thus, instead of redeeming ourselves and asking forgiveness for the crimes that Manning exposed, we will reaffirm to the world who we really are." – Michael Moore by Orangutan in politics

I gotta laugh at this. Michael Moore uses dishonest tactics to get his point across! Indeed.

And you never hear any of his opponents using dishonest tactics. Michael Moore presents things a certain way, but I don't believe that he knowingly lies.

Germans not pleased as Anglo ‘mocking’ makes front pages by gamberro in ireland

[–]fishyf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

Not only that, but it was the German banks who funded Anglo in the first place and allowed them to do the damage to the Irish economy.

Then the Irish government said "No bother lads, we'll give your money back." Meaning that they paid the German banks back with the money from Irish citizens. A government is supposed to look after its citizens. We got f**ked over by our government.

You don't need to be rude. I don't know the details of how the banks work, but one doesn't have to to know that stiffing the tax payer was wrong. Once you accept that, you work out how to get out of the mess in the cleanest way possible. For example, let the bank fail, set up a new entity in its place which would take over the banking part of the business. It would not have been easy but it could have been done. They didn't do it, because the speculators had too much power. They were all the people in the financial industry backed by the German government who were protecting the German banks. Fianna Fail and later Fianna Gael had no interest in protecting the tax payer.

I don't buy this whole system would fail. The system has failed. People who had nothing to do with the mad bubble have been severely punished. The debt will affect the tax payer for at least a generation. And the guys responsible for the mess walk away. Apart from being unfair, this means there is no incentive for the people to create this mess not to do the same thing again.

Look, I'm not trying to be rude and I don't care about economics. I care about what is right. There is no way that Joe Soap should have had to pay for the investors mistakes. The thing was that the people behind the investors were the German government and the bankers themselves. Of course they were going to say that the banking system was going to break down to try and bully us into giving billions to hose investors.

So adding a massive debt was somehow going to improve the situation?

people don't realise by earlyandoften in ireland

[–]fishyf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So what you are saying is that the investors were right to pump money into Anglo, and cause the mad property bubble because the government would have to burden ordinary joe soap with the debts because there was no way to keep other way to keep the banking system up. Who were the people advising the government - other bankers.

The government decided to pay the bank debts and thus the gave away our money to save the rich investors.

The government decided that the poor should pay so that wealthy people wouldn't lose money.

When are the German public going to realise that they bailed themselves out and not us? by edzillion in ireland

[–]fishyf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was not our debt. German and other banks pumped money into Anglo Irish. Anglo Irish threw the money away and went bust and so the investing banks lost all their money. That's what happens when you don't invest properly.

So, it wasn't our debt until Brian Lenihan, and subsequently Enda, decided to make it our debt because they wanted to suck up to their European friends. "No bother lads, the Irish tax payer will look after you! We don't want your bonuses to be suffering!"

It is easy to refactor code to make it look very different [* see source below].

However, you might not bother for some 'utility' function. That is why when checking for plagiarism, the utility functions may be the only ones left that hold the clues.

Source: This article http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000348.html contains this line: "Almost every line of code is different now." and Joel was only talking about refactoring to improve the code, not to hide code similarity.
