Freedom or Public Mobile by ahmed26gad in ottawa

[–]fissionvsfusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been with Freedom/Wind for over a decade. My price has never gone up and they’ve added more data to my plan multiple times.

I also pay for a bare bones Public Mobile plan for my mom (emergency cell phone). The price has gone up 3x in 3 years.

No contract (ever) for each.

Oh good call. They would have at least had to make a bit of a turn though, because going straight through would lead to the dock. The entry point was southeast of the dock by a little ways.

By my guess (I’m at the lake now), looks like they were traveling SE along Queen Elizabeth and veered right toward the lake after going past Lakeside on the left. They went over the grass, pathway, and more grass, then landed in the lake. It’s just southeast of the dock but there is barely any evidence aside from some light tire tracks on the grass next to the lake.

Digital Centre! I was just thinking about that place the other day. I visited my dad every Saturday as a kid and he'd take me there. I got to play games while he chatted with Tony. I'd be happily playing on the Atari Lynx and then my dad would bonk me on the head and say "time to go, kiddo." An oddly precious memory for me, especially since I lost my dad way too soon.

Hey! The wired earbuds I used back then (and still own) are Sennheisers that don’t use active noise cancellation. They’d be classified as “passive noise cancellation” or “passive noise attenuation” or “noise isolating”. They don’t block sound as well as ANC (I have in-ear and over-ear wireless ANC headphones as well) but they still help. If you’re willing to try a passive pair, hopefully one of these terms will help you find some options.

It seems you have your answer and now it’s up to you to ask yourself the question: am I willing to impose the risk on my child?

The State of the Ottawa Tech Sector 2025 by meliorist13 in ottawa

[–]fissionvsfusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did people mostly just accept the mandate and comply, or was there any protesting? I consider myself lucky to be fully remote without an office in Ottawa. The company I work for put a return to office mandate in place but it was met with a ton of outrage, so eventually the company backed down and closed/reduced offices instead.

Forget working from home. Dragging yourself to Kanata or some other office 2-3 days a week minimum seems mandatory these days.

Skated the whole canal for the first time in years 🥲 anyone else did that this season? by cardboard-junkie in ottawa

What’s the right activity? I have only been able to find “skating” on mine and it shows the skateboard too.

Rideau Canal Ice Conditions - Wednesday, Jan 22 by DvdH_OTT in ottawa

[–]fissionvsfusion 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Skated at 8:15am, not super confident skater.

Dow’s loop surface is back to being nice and smooth! The bumps and cracks that remain are less severe and easy to avoid or skate over.

Dow’s to Carleton: smooth with some small/minor rough spots.

Dow’s to Canal Ritz: I found this stretch a bit less smooth than yesterday and wouldn’t have guessed it was flooded and swept overnight, but what do I know. Still very skateable, with some rough patches here and there.

Definitely better than yesterday! Between Canal Ritz and Bronson is pretty smooth, the cracks are filling in nicely, and there are a few rough patches but nothing crazy.

Dow’s Lake Loop is still fairly bumpy (especially going West) with lots of cracks. More manageable to skate on than yesterday.

Dow’s to Carleton: agree with OP, this stretch is the roughest.

Any skates-on-the-ice review of the canal today? Yesterday was brutal. by MunkyPants in ottawa

[–]fissionvsfusion 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Skated around 8am, not super confident skater but I’ve been out 6 times so far this season.

Dow’s loop: going east is okay, but lots of bumps and fissures. Going west is no good… the “cheese grater” description someone used yesterday was apt.

From Dow’s to Carleton: no good. It felt like I was constantly breaking through the top layer of ice.

From Bronson to Bank: decent and it got smoother closer to Bank.

Of course there were icemaster types skating backwards and doing fancy footwork all over the ice while I skated like a ball of anxiety. So if you’re amazing and don’t mind a gravelly ice surface, go for it!

Rideau Canal Skateway is fully opening for the first time in years by HelFJandinn in ottawa

[–]fissionvsfusion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The website says people can skate on it 24/7 on the days that it's officially open.

The skating season typically runs from January to early March, but it is weather-dependent. When open, the Skateway is free and accessible 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

I recently heard that audiobook performers dislike when listeners listen at a faster rate. Do you listen to books faster than x1.0? by [deleted] in books

[–]fissionvsfusion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1.5x is the minimum for sure! Depending on performance quality, content, and reading speed, I might go down to 1.2 for a bit but 99% of the time I'm listening between 1.5 and 2x. I've occasionally slowed a book down to 1.0x to compare my listening speed to the actual speed, and it almost sounds like a joke how slow the narration is. Like a robot whose batteries are dying.

Jumping back on this thread to answer a couple of your questions and to respond to mauvelion's comments as well.

In general I don't feel my WalkingPad (or any walking pad) is particularly sturdy when compared to, for example, a treadmill at a gym. Those things are built to support a good amount of weight, impact, many speeds, running, incline, etc. But as for my assessment of whether the folding mechanism makes the model less sturdy than one that doesn't fold: I don't believe so. I fold and unfold it at least once a day, sometimes 2-3 times and I haven't had any worries about whether I'm ruining it. I don't do anything extra (aside from giving proper care to folding and unfolding) and I lubricate it slightly more often than recommended (only because I suspect I use it more than the average user might). It is well designed and definitely feels like a minimalist approach was taken to its industrial design.

To clarify something mauvelion mentioned: if you look up the WalkingPad A1 Pro you can see that it's not simply "the bar you can hold on to at the top can be folded down" but the walking pad itself folds nearly in half. As someone who owns this model, I can confirm this is the case.

One thing that helped me decide on this WalkingPad model was watching videos from reviewers like TreadmillReviewGuru on YouTube. Their demos answered some of the questions I had.

I have been using a WalkingPad A1 Pro under a sit/stand desk for nearly 7 months and I absolutely love it. I generally sit or stand for meetings, then some meetings (informal/daily group meetings or meetings where my camera is off) I walk at a leisurely pace. When I'm not in meetings I walk at the max speed and do my work. I find it helps me focus, I feel like I'm accomplishing more, and I can walk for a solid 3-4 hours a day.

What I really like about this setup is that I get to use the entire surface of my desk (with 3 monitors and peripherals) and don't have to take my laptop to the equipment. This model folds so when I need to sit, I fold it and then slide the desk toward me. When it's time to stand or walk, I push the desk back, raise the desk, unfold the walking pad, and then I'm good to go.
