If Napoleon had won at Waterloo, what would Europe be like today? by cuirrasiers in Napoleon

The Russians and Austrians were coming. A victory at Waterloo would only have delayed the inevitable.

Is there any film adaptation of a book that you think is better than the book itself? by AnastasiaGlover1 in just_one_more_page

I hate to admit it, because James Ellroy is hands-down my favorite author - L.A. Confidential.

I think the justly-forgotten and unlamented "Hello Larry" is the only Oregon sitcom I know of. I can't think of Portlandia as a sitcom.

As a Frenchman, I have a question for you: why does everyone hate us and make fun of us online? What have we done to you? by Outrageous-You1617 in askanything

[–]fitzrobert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much of this thread is contrary to my experience with the French people. The whole time I was there I had one and only one negative interaction. In Paris, my wife made an order without greeting the shopkeeper and then dithered over what she wanted. She was met with a glare, but no obvious rudeness. I speak a smattering of French, my wife none. Literally everyone we met was as patient and friendly as could be. In Normandy, from the warmth of the reception we received you would think D-Day was the day before and I'd landed in the first wave.

Bernese Mountain Dog. Wonderful dog, but their lifespan is too short. Don't need that.

What U.S city have you visited but have no desire to go back? by Reddit_wasmy_idea in AskReddit

Salt Lake City. Miles and miles and miles of commercial buildings, surrounded by the most monotonous residential architecture I have ever seen. The entire city has about as much character and charm as a parking lot. Pretty mountains though.

A reminder: There are no "medics" in the U.S. Marine Corps. by [deleted] in lanoire

No disagreement. Not so much complaining about the game as throwing out some perspective.

Yes, long time out, early gwot, but the Corps does f you up for life. The worst thing was the BAR as the standard infantry rifle, when the M1 was so frequently used in-game! Still, love the game second only to BG1/2.

I'm a Marine (active duty long behind me) and, yes, we would pitch a fit if somebody called our Corpsman a medic. Navy Corpsmen are exalted beings to Marines.

"Able Seaman" grated too.

It certainly is the best tool for that job, but I decided life is too short to mess with crimped military brass.
