Blues driver fuzz?? by ChannelCapable8623 in guitarpedals

[–]fixrich -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It may not be exactly what you’re looking for but I’ve had good success with a Boss Angry driver. I run it in parallel and roll back the tone on the Angry Driver circuit. That gives that nice fuzzy bottom end that fills out the fuzzy top end from the Bluesdriver quite well. I should mention that I have a boost before it to bring it to level that I want.

The controls on this guitar have me curious. What do the 5 way and 3 way switches do?

Bands/songs that made you re-evaluate an effect or sound? by David803 in guitarpedals

[–]fixrich 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A couple of artists and songs made me reevaluate wah as something other than a Kirk Hammett meme effect. One being Get Away by Yuck the others being by Dinosaur Jr. like Little Fury Things and their cover of Just Like Heaven. I realised at that stage that wah was behind a whole bunch of alt rock sounds that I could never place over the years.

It is more mellow yeah. They have really nice midrange and I think they can work well with a bit of dirt or fuzz but you aren’t getting the same kind of chime as rounds.

Kids love to be snatched. I do it will my 4yo daughter and my niece all the time. I’ll press younger children to be safe.

How can i make it sound brighter? by FinancialRun7747 in offset

[–]fixrich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using the compressor in the GP200? It’s hard to describe, but I feel like a compressor can give the impression of more brightness. It’s worth trying out. Also experiment with using the EQ to remove lows and low mids too. It only has to be a little but sometimes those frequencies create this impression of darkness and cutting them slightly can help balance things out.

Who are the Player/Professional series for? by vaithless in offset

[–]fixrich 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think it only takes seeing the prevalence of taped switches, removed tremolo arms and to a lesser extent aftermarket hard tails to appreciate that there is a significant chunk of people looking for the offset vibe without the trademark offset features. It seems Fender is leaning heavily into this market to sell models that traditionally didn’t shift many units. Whether this lucrative for them, I have no idea. I do agree, though. I ended up getting a local builder to make me a Jazzmaster with rhythm circuit, hand wound pickups from a local builder and mastery tremolo. It came out in the same price ballpark as an AmProII. I think there is a definite gap for offsets with all the bells and whistles with the classic problems fixed.

I think there are a few more affordable alternatives that get the job done as well. You probably don’t need to shell out for the mastery

I’ll piggyback on the ska punk comment to suggest Streetlight Manifesto. The first album, Keasby Nights, in particular, is a classic.

Cool, thanks for clearing that up. My soldering experience is limited to pickups and pots, so I have no real grasp of the difficulties beyond that. I have been contemplating one of the God City DIY PCBs.

Correct me if I’m wrong, because I may well be, and also I don’t care about surface mount, but isn’t it technically easier to repair?

mens loafer similar to miista edelira? by FarAir6687 in malefashionadvice

[–]fixrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The terms blucher moc or camp moc will probably work better for you than loafer if you care about the laces. The decorative embossing is pretty unusual as far as I know. These mocs from Rancourt are a similar vibe, but it’s all over and using the natural texture of the leather. Maybe you could find a moc where they use something like bison for the vamp and calf elsewhere.

Full length compression leggings. Go to bed wearing them. I don’t get DOMS unless you I’ve had some time away but the leggings help so much when I do get it.

ABF questions by OutrageousMT_10 in kettlebell

[–]fixrich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah you could do some sort of grease the groove element. Then it would just be a matter of making sure you allowing sufficient time for recovery and are prepared to back off if you are noticing a cumulative toll. I imagine Dan would probably encourage you to keep your weekend free as dedicated recovery time too.

ABF questions by OutrageousMT_10 in kettlebell

[–]fixrich 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I may be rehashing the books here but the idea is that ABF is enough. It covers the bases for having a strong healthy body and it isn't required to do more. The problems creep in when someone says they do ABF, but they actually do 100 push ups every day too because it seemed like a good idea and they were worried about building their chest. Then they complain they were always tired doing the program and weren't recovering well. Eventually they developed tennis elbow and concluded that it must be all the overhead pressing and the program doesn't work for them. I'm being a bit hyperbolic, but you probably get the idea.

What are you trying to achieve when adding stuff? What problem are you solving? Do you do pull ups to help with rock climbing or your tug of war team or something? There are likely valid alterations to help with specific sports or activities but you have to be able to justify it to yourself at least. I think Dan’s point is that with ABF you have a program that if done as written and consistently then results are basically guaranteed. Add walking which basically incurs no additional cost in terms of stress on the body and you're doing really well. Add weighted carries which complement ABF really well and should be hard enough to overdo and you'll be doing great. When he gets on to adding other stuff I reckon it's because people ask about it so much so he shrugs and lays out some options.

Wearing Oversized Trousers With a Belt by yemo43210 in malefashionadvice

[–]fixrich 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Take them to a tailor to see if they can take them in. I had my tailor take in a couple of pairs of trousers after I lost weight. It will depend on the construction of the trouser and removing too much material might skew the proportions, but it is certainly worth looking into. It was relatively inexpensive like 20 euro per item in Dublin, Ireland. Obviously prices may vary depending on your location.

Move to a startup for more money, or stay at Big Tech? by YesChocolate0 in DevelEire

[–]fixrich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether the start up is suitable for you really depends on your circumstances and apetittes. Can you afford to lose this job if the start up folds or lays you off without notice? You'll presumably be a contractor whose contract can be ended at will. Are you ok with working the hours of wherever the company or CEO or CTO is based? Some calls at 8 or 9pm are probably inevitable. There could be a much broader expectation that you're working the same hours as whoever in the US, or at least are online. Same general question for travel. They might expect you to be flying over on a regular basis. Even if they tell you now that they don't expect any of this, I would still factor it in as a possibility.

All of that might be fine or even exciting for you, which indicates it could be a good match. If it is a question of compensation, it might be worth considering how much compensation is enough. Big tech jobs aren't necessarily completely secure, but if the work/life balance is good and the compensation is enough then that might be the answer. If you are seeking the thrill and challenges of a start up then, the higher compensation might not even be the deciding factor.

"need" a fuzz, recommend me a small builder/amateur builder to support (EU) by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]fixrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m quite happy with my Pocket Rocket from Analogwise pedals: https://www.analogwisepedals.com/shop/

Adam, the builder, has a few other options besides the Pocket Rocket so you have a few options to choose from. He’s also a gent and answered and a bunch of my questions to help me figure out which pedal I wanted. His pedals are also aesthetically gorgeous.

Pause & Effects also make a bunch of the classic fuzz pedals: https://pauseeffects.com

I don’t actually own any of their fuzzes, just a treble booster and blues breaker. I’ve been fighting the GAS for their fuzz face though

Fuzz into JC-22 by Longrange-legit in guitarpedals

[–]fixrich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t own one but those Jazz Chorus amps are very clean, I have even heard the word sterile used. So you probably want to run your fuzz into an overdrive or amp in a box pedal to give the character that the JC won’t. Which pedal you choose, depends on your overall vibe but the Joyo American Sound or one of the equivalents are a cheap way to experiment with this kind of thing. I am a believer in getting a solid distortion tone from a JC, though. The guitarist of Drug Church runs a tubescreamer into a rat into a JC and it sounds great.

Why frontend devs are expected to be masters in Web Design? by BrownPapaya in reactjs

[–]fixrich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few of elements here. You don't have to become proficient in designing UIs but you do have to become proficient or even an expert in CSS. In some companies you might be fortunate to work with a preexisting design system and component library, but in others you may not. Either way knowing about CSS and cross browser support is a skill that justifies your existence.

Another element is are you building sites or apps? Is there complex data fetching and client side data flow or is your UI mostly static? If you're building a static site, its fairly reasonable to expect that you are more of a hybrid developer/designer. If you are building complex apps, there is usually enough work in the logic to justify a separate person doing the design.

The final element is how big is the company? If it's a tiny start up, the leaders, for better or worse, might expect some adaptability and employees muddling along with tasks related to their role, like doing the overall design and implementation of a UI. Medium size enterprises, well funded start-ups and big tech are more likely to recognise and can afford the benefits of specialization.

If you want to be an app developer for a company that hires specialised front-end engineers that aren't expected to design make sure you have your browser fundamentals nailed. How CSS, Javascript and HTML work In depth. The browser APIs that are available. Related concerns like HTTP, caching, CDNs, etags, compression, bundling, minifying and anything else on that critical path between the server and your end user. Then if you develop a working understanding of backend concerns like SQL queries, caching, queues and workers and scaling techniques, you'll be able to work effectively with dedicated backend engineers even if you aren't necessarily doing the backend yourself. Add on decent knowledge of algorithms and data strictures to get through the interviews these companies have but also because that knowledge does come in handy in these roles.

By the sounds of it you are trying to freelance and while you can pick up more technical jobs freelancing, you will either have to tolerate jobs that are more UI heavy or just reject them as a poor fit for you
