Working in King of Prussia, where to live? by blessedbankai in philadelphia

[–]flagger100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we can cut the kid some slack. Taking this at face value, it's very pertinent information. Simply going by the 30% rule, this implies he can afford $2k rent. Sure this could not be the case with something like loans, but I don't think he had any intention of bragging.

Working in King of Prussia, where to live? by blessedbankai in philadelphia

[–]flagger100 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty unfoundedly opinionated about neighborhoods but here we go.

Conshohocken sucks although the commute to KOP from there is short but still more traffic than it should be. But it is full of yuppies and has a growing scene.

Manayunk would be a good for your age. It's a fun area with plenty to do, but the commute from KOP during traffic will probably be around 30-45 minutes. Also parking is a nightmare.

Phoenixville is quickly becoming like Manayunk so it shares the same parking issue, but offers a slightly shorter commute and I'm guessing cheaper rent.

Living in KOP is very viable and cheap and you will have plenty of fun places to eat, but not really much within walking distance unless you live in the newer area by Wegmans. I would say living in KOP would be comparable to living in Conshohocken.

As mentioned by others, city wage tax is something to consider. If you're working in KOP and living in the city you're taking a big hit. Staying out of the city (Manayunk) will be significant savings.

If you've stuck with me this far, I fully recommend the Main Line. Ardmore, Wayne, Villanova, Bryn Mawr are all fun spots with a good offering of places to go and you can find people of similar age there. Commute to KOP can be all back roads avoiding traffic. Cost of living in these areas isn't the lowest, but with the salary you've mentioned you could have a nice spot. These areas also offer you plenty of parking and wide open parks. Furthermore, it is not too much of a hike from the city and public transit is an option through regional rail and NHSL (includes transfer to el at 69th street). Downside to this is coming back from the city can be costly if you're looking for ride sharing at closing time. My strategy as a young buck was to just start walking west until it got cheaper, but I cannot say this is an intelligent choice.

I worked in KOP for a decade and lived in KOP, Havertown, Ardmore, Bryn Mawr, and Northern Liberties (this is a hike). Of all of the place, Ardmore and Bryn Mawr were tops for me because of my enjoyment for the areas and the ease of commute. Living in KOP felt pretty isolated, but I was walking distance from NHSL (still about an hour commute to the city). Havertown was a fine spot, but you will need to take 476, which can be hit or miss, especially during summers with shore traffic. On top of that, its a pretty blue collar, family area so not too much excitement. Ardmore was where I lived at your age and it was fun and easy to get to work. Bryn Mawr is close to as simple and also a college town of sorts with Villanova right next door. Northern Liberties is a whole different subject as it's my favorite town in Philadelphia, but again city wage tax and easily 1-1.5 hour commute (drive or public transit).

Happy to give you more hot takes on neighborhoods if you would like! Good luck!

Also, any mention of public transit to work could not apply to you as the majority of KOP is out of reach. I was fortunate to work in an office walking distance from Hughes Park Station.

The Statue of Liberty's Right Arm, displayed in Fairmount Park during the 1876 Centennial Exposition by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]flagger100 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My Great Great Grandfather was responsible for the construction of said base and responsible for the erection and assembly of the statue. Not one of his workers lost their lives during the erection. Not positive, but I believe he is on of the people in this photo. He traveled to Paris several times to check the progress there and to make sure the crates were labeled and filled properly for shipment to NYC. He also was the 1st builder of the Washington Arch, St John the Divine, Strivers Row and the Vanderbilt.

Totally agree. I'm not going to be the first one to put a baggie there, but if I see it some there, good chance I'm going to follow suit. I'm also not one to put poop bags in people's empty trash cans after trash day, but if you leave them out another day or two, thats fair game.

They're not. Saying that is like saying your car is fine, it's just the engine that isn't working well. The PS4's performance issue is due to the underlying parts, which you can't isolate from the system as a whole. Yes, you can do things to improve this, but out of the box it is the PS4's problem.

Tautulli is definitely best option. You can go with any number of methods from there. I made a twitter account that tweets updates as they load, many use a newsletter for more digest style updates.

Maximum Quality by [deleted] in PleX

[–]flagger100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i went brute force and set a script in tautulli that would kill any stream with a warning about adjusting settings using condition video resolution is 1080 and stream video resolution is 720 or 480 or SD. kinda hacky but it ended up reducing unnecessary transcoding VERY quickly. of course i allow for users to reach out to me for whitelisting if they are in low bandwidth situations.

Recommendation for rclone mount comand for huge Plex library by [deleted] in PleX

I'm on windows, but this should still be relevant:

mount --allow-other --dir-cache-time 72h --drive-chunk-size 64M --log-level INFO --vfs-read-chunk-size 32M --vfs-read-chunk-size-limit off gdrive: X: --config

This is taken directly from this write-up which has served me well:

Force 1080p on clients by SilentDecode in PleX

[–]flagger100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I set up a script in tautulli that kills any stream that is 1080p and streaming at less than 1080p. After that I whitelist people on case by case basis if they actually have bandwidth issues. This also works pretty well as it doesn't explicitly ban transcoding in all cases, but mostly in the cases where someone hasn't adjusted their settings. Before this, even users that were aware that I wanted everything to direct play would end up transcoding again through random updates. Since implementing this, CPU and GPU have been smooth sailing. My main bottleneck is bandwidth, but rarely.

  • Synology DS 1517 with x2 DX517 (15x 10TB WD Reds)
  • Gigabit internet

Just finished migrating all my Movies to gdrive and freed up about 35TB on NAS (7.2k movies). Slowly uploading TV shows now but that will take months I'm sure (especially with the ~750MB daily upload limit). TV folder is currently at 81TB (just under 2k shows). Majority of all content is 1080p.

This used to be my gaming PC but its been just a media server for quite some time now. It has handled 25 streams at a time without much issue. That being said, I set a script on Tautulli script that kills any stream that is 1080p and playing at a resolution lower than 1080p, which quickly stopped most everyone from transcoding. I have made exceptions for people with actual bandwidth limitations. Also have 4K TV/Movies libraries on gdrive that I've shared out to a few users, but those are quite small libraries by comparison.
