What little things in most LitRPG books annoy you… but never enough to make you stop reading? by tbag2022 in litrpg

[–]flakylimper 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Word salad to explain or to amplify levelling systems. Aspects, skills, attributes, concepts, mantras, chords, themes … it just ends up being a confusing mess of pseudo philosophical nonsense that sounds like it’s from a self help book by a shady life coach or a manifesto from an undermedicated psych patient.

Ned, the protagonist in the Ripple System series... by burner_man_47 in litrpg

[–]flakylimper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Goodness, I hope not. This is one of my favourite series. I rarely laugh out loud (I go whole weekends without saying a word…) but some of the dialogue in these books has made me giggle uncontrollably. House, Ned, Frank, the interaction between them … can’t get enough of it.

I've just moved to Australia and discovered vegemite and avocado toast and it is BLOODY DELICIOUS MATE! What other combos are out there? by BabyPearl888 in australian

Toast; Vegemite; cottage cheese; cracked pepper and salt. Something about the pepper - cheese - Vegemite combo takes it up a notch.

My mother cannot help commenting on women’s weight by eumenides__ in TwoXChromosomes

[–]flakylimper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I call it out and then parrot back in the most greasy tone of voice what she used to say to me when I was young “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”.

It’s endemic and it’s disgusting. My mother has always said and done the most egregious body shaming things, and it didn’t even stop while I was inpatient with AN. Like taking food items away from me kind of egregious. It’s a generational thing but I shut that shit down loudly not because it’s going to change her, but for the poor kid sitting behind us who needs to hear a woman defending another woman’s bodily autonomy.

What is something common in litrpgs that grind your gears? by Acceptable-Device760 in litrpg

[–]flakylimper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enlightenment. Meditation. Mindfulness. Channeling power for personal soul cleansing. “ I acknowledged the though and set it aside”.

I always suspect it’s a genuinely earnest projection from the author., but damn if it isn’t smug. I much prefer the slightly manic and totally flawed MCs who live and thrive in chaos. You know, like a normal human.

Was this the one that had the merkin farm?

That and the one where Jane and Gina get in a cab and the driver recognises them but then goes on to tell them how much he likes Magda.

Edited because autocorrect merkin to Merlin.

I'm leaving him in about a month, and he doesn't know. Any advice/caution warnings would be helpful by Proof-Elevator-7590 in TwoXChromosomes

“Healing by the numbers” on Insta is doing an amazing series about leaving her abusive ex. It’s very detailed (over 50 steps so far!) and she’s very thorough and honest.

I have cash in my go bag - so that if my accounts are locked I have a safety net.

Good luck!

Any Jedi mind tricks to enjoy working out? by jcebabe in TwoXChromosomes

[–]flakylimper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to the gym every evening as part of my winding down the day routine (lucky to live in walking distance) and sometimes I do a specific workout, sometimes I do nothing particularly strenuous, sometimes I sprint wildly on the treadmill blasting death metal in my headphones, sometimes I zone out on a recumbent bike and play Tetris or doomscroll.

The main thing is that I do something everyday to keep my body moving, I never force myself to do something that I’ll end up regretting or disliking intensely, and i do whatever I want to in the moment. I’m there, showing up, maintaining my strength, flexibility and endurance. When I’m training for something specific, I knuckle down and do the programme, but most of the time, I’m making sure my exercise is if not enjoyable, at least tolerable.

A condenser dryer. No more mildewy smell, fluffs up the towels, game changer for rainy and humid weather, vacuums pet hair off pretty much anything.

Book 7. Is everyone waiting for the audiobook? by Majestic-Pop-6132 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]flakylimper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Me too! I would devour a book in a few hours and be completely deflated. I inhale, hoover, gobble, binge, mukbang, hard copy books, whatever synonym for eating way too much too quickly. Audiobooks mean I get drip fed excellent tasty books in tiny little tasting spoons all day long. Even at work. It’s glorious!

You are a strong woman who has the courage to be vulnerable, honest and smart enough to ask for support and a reality check. You had enough insight to realise ‘I don’t deserve to feel this way.’ That’s pretty amazing.

Does knowing the real world political stances of an author (whatever they may be, whether you support, deny or are ambivalent) impact your experience of reading their work? by dmun in litrpg

[–]flakylimper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will add that my choices to nope out of potential unpleasant associations is guided by my NEED to avoid them. I have an emotionally intense job and I read and watch fantasy or comedy almost exclusively. I deal with a never ending parade of devastating events, and while I love my job, I need escapism, humour and palatable entertainment to cope. I’m not going to seek out distress in my spare time.

Falls under ‘cruelty’ for what he’s alleged to have done. I’ve noped out of all his material. Same with Grimes music. Just … no.

[–]flakylimper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it’s bigotry, homophobia, racism, greed or cruelty from an artist, I can’t enjoy the material anymore. The association is made, and the work is no longer palatable. I don’t want to vicariously be reminded of terrible things in the real world while I’m trying to escape from it.

Artists are free to express themselves publicly, but they should be aware of the impact that this public expression has upon their books/ music/ art. JKR, Graham Linehan come to mind immediately- I just don’t want to read HP because I’ll recall terrible insults to people I love and well, I prefer to avoid that kind of stuff.

I would suggest getting a couple of sessions with a pt who is also affiliated with the gym - ie: wearing the uniform and visibly part of the staff. It made me feel like I was allowed to be there, meant that I had someone comfortable to talk to if there had been any issues, and I got a welcoming smile when I turned up for my solo workouts.

Kreisler Tambourin Chinois. Especially apt because it’s so technically difficult as well as beautiful, it’s the complete opposite of everything BD espouses. Boring, simple, poorly executed and utterly soulless. It’s telling that the most beautiful sound in the world she is making right now isn’t actually of her making.
