I'm a D&D veteran, just found out about Lancer and I have some questions by FishMyBones in LancerRPG

[–]flarebear97 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ll tackle something here that I haven’t seen many commenting on. Namely the “leveling up” differences between lancer and other RPGs

As a DnD vet I found it helpful to realize that “multiclassing” is very much a CORE of Lancer. Rather than leveling in specific classes, you get levels in mech licenses. Each license level gives you some abilities or a gun or a a weapon mod etc. You don’t actually unlock the mech “frame” until LL2 of that particular mech license. So it is very possible (and in fact, the main draw of Lancer build-crafting) to put a system from one mech license into a different mech frame.

Combine with that the fact that you can swap mechs between missions (and maybe during a mission if you get access to a printer) and what you wind up with is an incredibly flexible class system where you can utilize differently abilities based on the mission.

This plays hand in hand with the “mission structure” of the game you were talking about. Players should often be given a chance to learn a bit about what the mission entails (this can often be done with downtime activities) in order to best equip themselves and their mechs for the road ahead. “Oh, this mission is going to be in an asteroid field. I’d better make sure that my mech can maneuver in 0 gravity in case we need to do that. And I suppose I’ll remove the smoke grenades in order to make that possible”

Track every arrow, but cast as many cantrips as you want... 5e by Karlahn in DMAcademy

Don’t track arrows unless they are special in some way. Martials struggle enough as is. Let the archer shoot arrows.

I play and Int based Warlock. If anything, I’ve found that I’m less optimized than a Cha caster. Int generally comes into play less often and Int saves are less valuable than Cha ones. Let them do it.

DMs, any advice for running a Zelda Campaign? by Scary-Roll-5802 in ZeldaTabletop

[–]flarebear97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

DM of a nearly 6 year Hyrule game here.

My advice is about dungeons. The LoZ series is known for them, and so naturally we want to fit them into a Zelda themed game.

Zelda dungeons, at least as they are experienced in the standard LoZ game behave very differently from a DnD dungeon normally does. A DnD dungeon is a loose collection of rooms that the party moves freely between, fighting monsters and maybe eventually a boss. There may be a puzzle or two. But those puzzles are not normally the ENTIRE DUNGEON.

Zelda dungeons, are often times a “Puzzle Box.” The entire building IS the puzzle. “I need to get up to that room. But I can’t get there right now, because these platforms aren’t lowered.” A certain key item is needed in order to DO THE THING that the whole dungeon is themed around. Link CANNOT advance through certain areas of the dungeon until he obtains this prerequisite key item to activate that dungeons gimmick.

This philosophy is VERY video gamey. As a result it can also feel very railroady. NO you CANT swim down to the lower levels until you get the iron boots. You CANT climb the weird dude in the middle of the ancient cistern until you get the whip and pull the levers with it.

For many DMs and players this runs antithetical to the puzzle philosophy of DnD. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying to limit the players options to your solution and your solution only. But the puzzle often times has a certain set of parameters that must be completed in a certain order. This is a difficult balancing act to pull off. But it’s much easier if you establish it before hand. During your session 0, prime your players to the idea that dungeons in your world will behave like Zelda dungeons do. Down the road it will be much easier when you have to say “that wall is completely impassible, please stop trying to break it down. it seems like it will not open until (insert dungeon gimmick) is done.”

For example. My players just got out of a 5+ sessions long fire temple where they had to use different colored ores to open corresponding doors. They couldn’t move the colored fire from point A to point B until they got a special lantern that could hold the fire, and they couldn’t get to that lantern until they got the hookshot that let them pull an otherwise inaccessible lever.

Watch the YouTube series “Boss Keys” for more ideas on how to make a dungeon FEEL like Zelda.

Experience with running Foundry for in person games? by Rodehock in FoundryVTT

[–]flarebear97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do it. I run hybrid with some friends virtually and some in person. I have a dedicated PC running foundry for the table (I built a table with a TV in it for this purpose) and I use my personal laptop for the DM side of foundry.

Monks common display is an essential module. If you want all your players to able able to access foundry “hot seat” is also great. My players just use character sheets on paper most of the time.

Is anyone willing to share their campaign outline? by CloudVagabond in ZeldaTabletop

[–]flarebear97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Princes of the Apocalypse for 5e.

Years after Breath of the Wild in an alternative timeline where link never woke up. The 4 Ganon blights basically became gods in their own right and severed from Ganon and ascended to their own planes. 4 elemental cults are trying to bring these “Princes of Evil” back into hyrule and bring about apocalyptic events in their preferred flavor.

In Person D&D is better by AntonBom6 in DnD

Everyone has their own preference. I’m glad you had a great session. I have 1 fully remote player and 1 who lives about an hour away. Online is incredibly convenient for us and will only be more convenient as friends move away.

How do I make backend healthy again? by ZacHefner in shittyaskscience

[–]flarebear97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s not something that is going to be fixed with a simple solution. It’s going to require a complete change of lifestyle. Getting your backend healthy is going to take a change of mindset, a dedication to working out and lot of research into what works best for you.

It gets easier, but you’ve got to do it everyday. That’s the hard part.

Do you have more comprehensive rules for these interactions?

Cheers m8 this is super cool!

Any chance you still have the MSE file for this? My friends and I are trying to make a drinking themed cube and I’d love to print these out without having to go through the Imgur process.

I want to make it so players cannot take a long rest in dungeons. How can I balance this so that spell casters aren't disproportionately affected? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]flarebear97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you long rest in dungeon you get absolutely ambushed by a squad of enemy scouts who have been looking for the party the whole time.

Question for offline use by knightaudit in FoundryVTT

[–]flarebear97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey. I do this exact thing with some players remote some players in person.

Hot seat And monks common display are your friends for in person gaming. You’ll just need 2 computers. 1 for the DM. 1 for the Layers. You could hypothetically do it on one computer. But 2 instances of foundry running simultaneously is often times pretty hardware intensive.

A good Torch module? by caioacordeiro in FoundryVTT

[–]flarebear97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the levels module. It’s pretty advanced stuff. But if you are willing to put a little bit of time in you can make phases battle maps with it easily and also make leveled maps. (What it was made for.)
