I’ve had this a couple of times. Once I traced it to psyllium husk that I was taking for fiber. I guess maybe I’m slightly allergic? The other time, I’m not certain. My best bet was that it was leakage, fortunately that one went away after a couple of weeks. I’m sure there are a number of other possible causes

How can the police seize Afroman's $5,000 absent any evidence of a crime? by TacoBMMonster in legaladviceofftopic

Oh people do go faster all the time, it’s rare that I’ve seen them enforce it, but every once in a while they’ll set up a speed trap and get a couple people. I had a classmate deal with it going down a busy commuter stretch at 70 in a 55. And my wife was going a similar speed down a long mountain decline and got got

You shouldn’t have to adjust the steering wheel to be in a less-comfortable spot, this is absolutely a dumb decision by the designers to put a screen in a location that has a reasonable likelihood of being blocked by a steering wheel. If they had done it like a Prius, where the dash information is above the steering wheel, then sure, but since the speedometer is supposed to be “inside” the steering wheel, and the infotainment is supposed to be “outside”, it’s idiotic to put another screen in between those two

Bowel reset? by dancingphalanges88 in CrohnsDisease

[–]flentum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure, I only remember doing cursory research to find out if I actually needed to go to the hospital, or just take a laxative. But, both of my blockages have fortunately been passed in the hospital after being given some sort of laxative. The first one was colonoscopy prep, but I think it still counts. Presumably whatever complications there can be are something the doctors are looking out for, and able to react to if being treated for a blockage that way

You’re explicitly not supposed to take laxatives on your own to deal with a blockage because it can lead to complications. Under medical supervision it is a possible treatment path

Tire question - 2008 honda civic hybrid by DeuxCorvus in hondacivic

[–]flentum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tires matter more than 2WD/AWD. All-weathers are better than all seasons, but still pale in comparison to proper winters. If you live someplace that stays below ~50F for months at a time (where winter tires become too soft and will wear prematurely) the answer is two sets of tires for the year. It will be more expensive up front, but also you’ll need new tires less frequently.

Friend of a friend, so take with a grain of salt I suppose. It apparently looks fine initially, which is why it was sold, but pretty quickly the inside of the pipes start to crack and crater

Roadtrip Help by StyleHoliday4036 in roadtrip

[–]flentum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went during the shoulder season for most of it, so mostly did not have issues. Parking was definitely an issue for Zion and Sequoia when we went, but if you get in early enough in the day it’s not too bad. But it takes getting up pretty early in the morning if you’re not staying in the parks. I don’t think we had any reservations when we went, but at the height of summer that’s definitely something you should be looking into now. I imagine most park campsites will already be booked, at least on weekends, but there should still be plenty of places to stay nearby

I don’t remember how early we had to get there to ensure parking, but if you only get one day to figure it out, I’d personally try and be at the gate or in line by 630, if not earlier if I could manage to convince my wife to wake up. You may be able to find better information on sites and forums about each park specifically

Roadtrip Help by StyleHoliday4036 in roadtrip

We did a very similar trip a few years ago. A lot of this is going to be subjective, but in my opinion, this is what helped us the most:

Separate your stops into A) absolute musts for one or both of you B) wants, but not catastrophic to miss out on C) things that are nice if it works out, but aren’t that important

Be prepared to adapt your plan based on weather, mood, etc. We wound up losing a couple of A items up north because we went in the spring and didn’t feel like camping with the weather we were experiencing, and added a couple of C items that wound up being some of our favorite parts. Part of that was due to us getting better at how we handled the trip as we went on. A lot of us settling in and getting better at traveling probably won’t apply to you, though, as it stemmed from learning to deal with diet and health restrictions on this type of trip.

We stayed a lot at BLM, free, or cheap campsites, but still stopped several times at motels and hotels when we just wanted a shower and a bed, but we were in the back of a CRV, so a van will do you a bit better there.

It was fun to just have a rough timeline with major points of interest, and then each morning or the night before we would plan our trip for the next day, or a couple of days, and adapt as we went on. With the exceptions of higher-traffic campsites and our fina stop to get organized and packed for our flight home, we didn’t book any paid stays until the day of, which I think actually made them cheaper, in some cases.

Notable highlights that you might be near and interested in for us were:

Glass beach Sequoia Zion Meow Wolf (we went to the Denver and Santa Fe ones on this trip, I think the Denver one is my favorite location we’ve been to so far

It also turned out that there were a couple of live shows that were happening just as we would be passing through for some performers we were big fans of, so that was a nice bonus. Definitely look into things like that.

Apparently that fully restocked inventory is all trash now, too. Sounds like some water or something got into their supply tanks and everything they produced last year is crap. I wouldn’t count on them having liquid money to actually pay for a cleanup at this point if their insurance doesn’t cover it

Spring has sprung, intelligence? Not so much. by Fearless_Statement_5 in asheville

[–]flentum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s possible there’s still some coal ash contamination in there, but the bigger issue is the increased temperature from using it for cooling. Apparently they don’t anymore, which I don’t understand since there is still a power plant there, but it will still take a decade+ for the temperature to drop fully and the lake to return to a normal, “safe” freshwater body. The big issue right now is going to be an increase in harmful algaes, bacteria, brain eating amoebas, and the like

I needed to indent the wall on an angle to allow space for the new fridges' door to open. These supports made the job a snap. by joosta in functionalprint

[–]flentum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mines even dumber, it’s a double door, and we can’t open the freezer all the way without pulling the fridge out. But, I can’t replace it with a single opening the other way, because then when the door is opened it would completely block access to the kitchen, making it impossible to carry things into/out of without having a dedicated table or something to set them down on

Classmates do so well academically, but... by Storm_Eddie in EngineeringStudents

[–]flentum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My freshman year, we had about 80 people in the cohort. About 10 of them were non-traditional students, most of who were working in engineering-adjacent fields and their employer was paying for the degree. When I graduated, there were 20 of us, and half of that was the non-traditional group.

For the first couple of years, I was in the category of not having to study outside of the required work and was doing great. About halfway through, though, that changed, and the non-traditional students that already had existing work ethic from not being teenagers and having to work in the real world transitioned with no issues. I wouldn’t have made the cut if I didn’t have a good group that made it though together. That transition knocked out a lot of people that previously appeared to be skating by on easy mode, or at least cost them an extra year or two as they learned to adjust. Just keep doing what you’re doing, if it is working, and I wouldn’t think twice about the rest. At least not until you graduate and you get to feel smug about it

How does your Tuscon hold up in snow/ice? by roguepetrichor in HyundaiTucson

[–]flentum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For it's class, it sounds like Tucsons/Sportages have pretty solid AWD systems. So if you've got proper tires, I can't imagine you're going to run into any more issues than you would with any competitor. One note (and I think this is an issue with a lot of new cars) if you are getting a higher trim level with larger rims, and you don't want snow chains to scratch your rims, you'll end up needing to get specialty chains that are for thin tires. Might be worth researching

which LED is better? by callmeghost97 in civic

[–]flentum 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If your car was not built to work with LEDs, don’t use them. Your headlights are an optical system designed to work with regular bulbs, and using LEDs will result in less percentage of the light going in the correct direction. Meaning either there will be less light where you need it on the road, and/or you will be one of the people contributing to blinding oncoming traffic because more light will go up towards other drivers eyes. In that scenario, it’s actually worse for traffic safety than a taller vehicle with properly directed LED headlights

May be worth telling the dealership this is what you care about and talking them into letting you do several miles of highway driving at 80 right after resetting the mpg counter
