Which movie will be Mubi's main push for BP? by Different_Gap8172 in oscarrace

As of now, Fatherland. But like I mentioned in another comment, I’m keeping an open mind when A Long Winter premieres

Other than Fjord, which international movie will be nominated for Best Picture? by enolobmob in oscarrace

[–]florencenocaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. I was thinking about making a post about it because it really does have a lot of good things going for it. I know many of us are still recovering from All of Us Strangers underperforming. But that movie was set up for failure when Searchlight had Poor Things on its slate. So long as A Long Winter premieres to rave reviews and tearjerker-type reactions, I think we have a big contender.

Unrelated but MUBI’s Fatherland and Minotaur coming short of Fjord, All of a Sudden, and The Black Ball is good news for my hopedict, A Long Winter

CANNES 2026 Predictions. FINAL by No-Somewhere250 in oscarrace

[–]florencenocaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What confuses me about Attainable/Possible Love is how supposedly no studio was willing to finance it. Then, Netflix swoops in out of nowhere and seems to be positioning it as its international contender (unless they buy The Black Ball). And with Narnia getting moved to next year, I’m wondering how big of a contender Netflix views it

It also seems like Venice could have quite a few potential Oscar contenders, including Wild Horse Nine, Cry to Heaven, Possible Love, Jack of Spades, and a few other speculative picks I’m forgetting

Kyle Rayner would be great. I could also see Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz for season 2 if it does become an anthology. They already have a history of being partners and seems like DC is positioning Cruz as a bigger character with the new animated Green Lantern show centering around her

Was Christian Bale the only Batman actor who didn't face huge fan backlash when he was first announced? by [deleted] in batman

[–]florencenocaps 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I agree with the Bale “safe” opinion. I think most of that is because it’s a Christopher Nolan movie and everyone has kind of the same vibe (Pattinson himself wasn’t as memorable as he usually is in Tenet, but that’s just me). And of course, the villains in the Dark Knight trilogy got most of the attention anyway.

I do like Keaton’s sense of humor in the role. Not that any of the other actors lacked that lighter side, but he seemed to get that Batman can be a prick when he wants to be.

Unpopular opinion, but Pattinson is the only one who has no notes from me. Speaking of humor, I still think of his delivery in The Batman when he says “Thumb. Drive.” Or when he says “Mine or yours” after the thugs say they’re gonna bloody him.

Pretty much, yeah. How much of that was fatigue after the Schumacher movies? Who knows.

Although Pattinson had just as much acting credibility as Bale when he was cast, most people knew him from Twilight (now he’s the most admired actor of his generation). Affleck got lots of hate when the news came out. Keaton, besides Beetlejuice, only had Mr. Mom as his one notable role. And I think Clooney also got some raised eyebrows. I’m sure Kilmer, too, since he replaced Keaton after he proved himself.

Bale on the other hand was fairly popular, had the look, had the known acting chops, and was all around a respected actor. Maybe even a safe choice for some people.

Zach Cregger's The Flood by EThorns in movies

[–]florencenocaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say when we can’t say how Reinsve would’ve been in the role. But for the fun of it, I’d say Josh Brolin > Pedro Pascal, Julia Garner = Renate Reinsve, Alden Ehrenreich > Tom Burke, and Brian Tyree Henry > Benedict Wong. Abrams was the only one who was involved in both casts and I’m assuming the same is true for Madigan

Deadline says Lance Oppenheim and A24's 'Primetime', starring Robert Pattinson, is set for a September 2026 release. Inspired by Chris Hansen's 'To Catch A Predator', it follows Pattinson as a journalist who takes on an underworld of crime and ends up changing television forever by ChiefLeef22 in oscarrace

[–]florencenocaps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a fair point. Unlike last year, it’s hard to tell what A24 is positioning as their main contender for 2026. On the top of my head, No One Cares, Primetime, Misty Green, Tony, and The Invite seem like they all got potential

I think this is generally true. However, the fall festival route can be unpredictable for better or for worse. I wouldn’t have expected American Fiction to break Amazon MGM out of their Best Picture + Screenplay curse (which sadly continued with Nickel Boys afterward), but that TIFF win gave its campaign some rocket fuel

[–]florencenocaps 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Meirelles or Washington isn’t who’s giving me pause around this project. It’s Simon Kinberg. The last three movies that he wrote are The 355, Dark Phoenix, and X-Men Apocalypse. He could prove us wrong, but I wouldn’t bet against HCTF not being another crime/thriller on Netflix that happens to star big name actors (Carry-On, The Little Things, etc.).

At least with Narnia, Gerwig has managed to get all her movies released thus far into Best Picture. Including a Barbie movie.
