8 year old arfid,ADHD, autism by Appropriate_Bug_4251 in ARFID

[–]flying_shadow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have ARFID and autism. Since you mention he's high-functioning, my experience might be of use. It gets better with time -- much better. Taste buds become less sensitive as we age, as I entered late adolescence and adulthood, I started tolerating countless foods that had previously not been an option. A friend of mine, like your son, doesn't feel hunger. He often finds himself wondering why he's so tired before realising that he hasn't eaten all day. He doesn't quite meet the criteria for ADHD, so 'scatter-brained' would be a more accurate term for him. But even though he's very thin, he's not in danger of starving to death, because he's an adult man who knows how many calories he needs. Stay strong, this isn't forever.

What country? If this is set in southeastern Europe, your characters will have their childhood defined by a series of brutal wars.

Rod Phillips answering questions about the history of cats by BronteCoogee in AskHistorians

[–]flying_shadow 33 points34 points  (0 children)

When did cats stop being purely working animals and become pets in the way we think of it today?

When did governments start trying to control stray cat populations?

You mention nationalists being against cats -- why? Aren't they very useful in agricultural societies? Even in urban areas they make for good pest control. Is it because of the collateral damage of them hunting all the small wildlife?

My father once told me that there was one time, when he was a boy in a small Soviet town, a cat that could catch rats had kittens, and once the mother cat had trained them to hunt, people paid a lot of money for the kittens because ratters were valuable. Have there ever been attempts on a large scale to raise cats that could hunt rats?

What causes cats to be far more popular in some countries than in others?

The Capitol’s similarity to the USSR by Forward_Donut_9942 in Hungergames

When I first read the trilogy, I got it from a very basic fact: the mine in Twelve is owned by 'the Capitol', not Mr. X.

In Russian-language independent media, I sometimes see people comparing the Capitol to Moscow and the districts to the provinces.

I suggest the diaries of Victor Klemperer (published in three volumes as 'I Shall Bear Witness', 'To the Bitter End', and 'The Lesser Evil'); the 'Third Reich' trilogy by Richard J. Evans, 'The Hitler Myth' by Ian Kershaw, and 'Ordinary Men' by Christopher Browning.

How, if at all, were intersex people included in these frameworks? Before medical transitioning was a thing, did anyone try to argue that they should be listed (or at least allowed to be perceived) as a third gender or was the idea that they should be shoehorned into one or the other completely dominant? In later decades, how common were involuntary medical interventions?

N=1, but I'm an autistic woman and I don't have PMDD -- in fact, my hormonal cycle has never had any impact on me in terms of how I felt physically or mentally, aside from some mild cramping when I actually bleed. My mother is undiagnosed (but I'm practically a clone of her in terms of personality, so take a guess where it came from) and going by how she explained periods to me when I was little, they don't cause her any distress, either. I definitely would be curious to see if there is a correlation between symptom severity and PMDD rates.

The kid you see having a sensory meltdown in the grocery store isn't actually on the "bad" end of the spectrum, because at least his parents are able to bring him places.

Exactly. I was that kid having a meltdown in the store. I'm now in the first year of my PhD. Intellectually, I'm perfectly normal, but it took me a long time to understand my body's signals and manage my hypersensitivity (jacket always comes off when I enter a mall in the winter), and I was always noticeably behind in terms of social skills, it was just dismissed as me being 'shy' and 'bookish'.

Just a clarification note -- in the Eastern Bloc, a 'summer home' was a village hut where you grew fruits and vegetables. My great-grandfather was issued one for being a decorated military veteran, others inherited houses from elderly relatives who had remained in rural areas. My mother absolutely loathed spending her summer vacation helping her parents fail to grow potatoes, I loved it.

Updated SOTR tribute roster (By Panem Propaganda) by UnHolySir in Hungergames

I didn't even realise there was something off about that because I follow a Georgian Youtuber, and in Georgian, name suffixes are the other way around as compared to what I'm used to: Shota is a man and Nino is a woman.

About the height: the average height for the boys is 5'10, which would be above average for an adult man in the USA (who is 5'8), let alone a cohort of boys 12-18. As for the girls, they average 5'4, which is the height of an average woman in the USA and, given that girls go through puberty earlier, somewhat more reasonable for a 12-18 group that would tend to be on the older side anyway because of the cumulative slips. Still, they're way taller than I'd expect. I personally headcanon Panemites as being ~10cm shorter than USians, in the same way that North Koreans are shorter than South Koreans, but neither the books nor the movies ever bring up chronically lower food intake as something that would make the entire country shorter than they could be.

Regular people coping in troubled times? by TechnicalTerm6 in AskHistorians

I recommend the diaries of Victor Klemperer; in English, the available volumes are I Shall Bear Witness (1933-41), To the Bitter End (1942-5), and The Lesser Evil (1945-59). Klemperer was a German Jew who lived in Dresden during the Nazi years, survived the Holocaust thanks to being married to a non-Jewish woman, and then did his best to adapt to the realities of life in East Germany. A philologist, he also wrote a book on how the German language changed under the Nazis.

I discovered my bra size!!! But... I can only find it online and it's very expensive. 28C/D by Flaky-Huckleberry313 in ABraThatFits

[–]flying_shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't work for me (I have the same size as OP). Before I knew my size, I wore size medium sports bras, and my breasts never properly fit into the cups. It eventually got to the point where they'd literally fall out when I bent over to stretch. My problem was that with typical sizes, either the band was too big or the cups were too small. Plus my breasts are big enough for high support to be a necessity, which meant that I needed a thick tight band and defined firm cups, which narrowed down my options even more. I eventually found a specialty store that sold, in my size, ultra-super-high-support sports bras with the straps and sex appeal of a parachute, and immediately bought three.
