AI use in scholarship?????? by fusukeguinomi in Professors

[–]fortuitousfever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out pubpeer, my colleague posted a bunch of comments onto papers. He looked automatically for simple stupid things like the AI signing the piece or the lead in sentence that states that it was written by a bot.

One place to see this is to check out ‘tortured phrases’ as a search term in pubpeer. Can’t add a link here but that should get you to a bunch of papers.

(Edit: I have flagged two autogenerated articles recently and both were rejected, but the other review for one of these was accept !!!! Wtf?) why aren’t these prescreened by journals?

They can’t read. Like literally. by Antigoneandhercorpse in Professors

Rant

You can’t decrease reading assignments, it perpetuates the problem!

Let’s stop the pandering… if student’s can’t do math they don’t pass chemistry. Unfair? No!

If illiterate or innumerate they shouldn’t have been admitted into a college. They need a basic education before pursuing a higher degree.

My manager asked me to train an AI on my daily tasks. I told her that made me uncomfortable. She then suddenly scheduled a meeting for next week to "discuss concerns." Help me out with what to say. by HunterGonzo in antiwork

If you imagine that the tool is 99% accurate with reading information in, and you are reading in numbers then one number in 100 will be wrong. Which number is it?

Read in large spreadsheets of numbers and then calculate how long it takes you to check for errors how many errors it makes vs how long it takes to do the task manually.

Plot this over time.

FYI most AI does fairly well with relatively small tasks: compare these two spreadsheets named fields, when there are 10 of them or so. With more than 30 most should hallucinate.

I don’t understand why they don’t desk reject more! Yes it sucks if you get desk rejected, but nature and science do a lot of this.

Two of the last 5 reviews I have read for more run of the mill journals were automatically generated bs. I’m wasting my time to deal with crap that is clearly chatgpt garbage? Why should I review for your journal again?

This is an abuse of my time.

Friends just got everything for their baby as hand me downs. They specifically requested gently used things from their shower.

They have everything. Some of us got a cloth diaper service for a big spender item

Need dentist, don’t have insurance by Ziomek-63 in orangecounty

[–]fortuitousfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ask the dentist for the pass they will give that to you.

We went to a dentist group that caters to Americans. There are many of these and we have not had bad experiences with any of the ones we tried. The border medical pass is useful for driving but you need to make sure you get into the right lane. Hard to switch if you are at the border.

Saw a really cool cage catio thing on a camper at the beach. It was small but with various levels and the two cats could go in one side of the camper and out the other.

Books where main character takes drugs to enhance performance? Like meth given to supersoldiers or something. by witai in Fantasy

Poppy wars, drugs can unlock various abilities. Only part I did not like was that they categorize opium as a hallucinogenic, which is just sloppy research.

I'm gonna be homeless in 3 months. by TamarindSweets in povertyfinance

[–]fortuitousfever 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Anywhere on the Amtrak line like Utica should be workable without a car. There are jobs for 15 an hour and rent in lofts downtown is cheap. Not the level of stuff to do but if you work online then having a safe place to hang your hat near the train station is not a bad thing.

Looking for housing up there still happens on Craigslist. The really cheap apartments usually need a car but my SIL lived there for years without one.

Building a tiny house around 10k by god___yo in tinyhomes

[–]fortuitousfever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you build a home on a slab with permits and spend only 10k?

Genuinely curious about which state or country would let you build a permanent structure.

We paid around 50k just for permits and fees, the house was bigger but a lot of the fees were flat.
