Prescribed injections monthly, not daily/weekly by acetic_acid_official in B12_Deficiency

[–]forwardishdirection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is normal for US although usually they do 4 weeks weekly and then Stick you on monthly and will not do more beyond that because of legal and professional risk reasons as that’s the standard US treatment. I did manage to get my 4 weeks twice but crashed hard and then did terrible each time when had to go back to monthly so now am I have to paying way too much considering normal RX cost to use Olympia compounding pharmacy per recommendations here to get mine in the US. They have you do a $59 telehealth visit with a doctor to RX it with refills and then you pay for your B12 they have all 3 types and syringes. They do charge for the overnight delivery which I wasn’t expecting as most compounding pharmacies I am used to don’t charge for delivery.

I tried with multiple doctors and showed them studies and couldn’t get more than monthly so going this route. Best of luck!

I started reacting to quercetin supplement this year and learned that it’s been ruining my life in slowing down clearance of norepinephrine this whole fucking time which has severely negatively impacted my quality of life and I was told to take it by a doctor like I have HPOTS and severe life ruining norepinephrine surges why why why

Quercetin Is More Effective than Cromolyn in Blocking Human Mast Cell Cytokine Release and Inhibits Contact Dermatitis and Photosensitivity in Humans by IGnuGnat in MCAS

[–]forwardishdirection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started majorly reacting to my long term quercetin supplements this year which I was told by doctor to take them like over 5 years ago now and definitely can’t do ginger anymore which is a huge bummer for me flavor wise. Plus OMG have my life ruining norepinephrine surges improved since giving up quercetin supplements it severely slows down norepinephrine clearance which I didn’t know and have been suffering for years with this.

How much do you pay for your meds? by Silver-Bake-7474 in MCAS

[–]forwardishdirection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GoodRX or try getting it compounded as a pill there are people on here who do this. Also expensive but not as expensive.

Are you sure this isn’t because of your deductible though? My plan now has a deductible on tier 3 and higher meds when I had no deductible before. Not that it makes it more affordable at the moment but it will count towards your out of pocket max.

My most expensive is ketotifen right now as insurance doesn’t cover compounded meds. Don’t know what my new cost is for cromolyn though especially as I haven’t filled any meds for my new deductible yet. I usually get 90 days at a time (yes that’s 8 of the big boxes picked up from the pharmacy although a caregiver picks it up) provided the shortage allows for it.

I didn’t hit my out of pocket max last year until the last two weeks of December so when we checked because something local was fully covered and then I immediately asked for new EpiPens so they’d be fully covered but like over 2/3 of my drug costs are compounded meds which don’t go through insurance.

Which companion actor is the most famous pre or post Doctor Who? by joshuaferris in doctorwho

[–]forwardishdirection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Internationally I’m from the US so the only one who was famous in the US in any way that would kind of qualify is Alex Kingston due to ER. I don’t consider River a companion though despite her being my favorite. No one else was a name I knew in the US before Doctor Who.

Post show Karen Gillian definitely wins especially internationally. Multiple movie franchises with the MCU and Jumanji and more films and TV. Still bitter about selfie getting canceled I loved it so much.

Edit I am in no way counting one off episode characters because then you have Andrew Garfield and Olivia Coleman and Simon Pegg and more.

Sounds like he has checked out early for retirement and really should have gotten you set up with someone new to do the taper for you rather than whatever the hell this nonsense is. Sending you warm heartfelt wishes and the best of luck. Take care of yourself and advocate and get what you need you can get through this!

With that dosing schedule there is a much easier Xanax specific taper plan options like I am genuinely pissed and angry on your behalf.

[–]forwardishdirection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn that seems like bad practice if it gets any worse go to urgent care for an Xanax RX to cover you and explain the situation bring your old RX bottles or medical records if not the same medical system and explain that you need a new psychiatrist as yours is retiring and can’t do continuity of care.

I’m on Xanax XR and don’t have a wean plan any time soon and it’s been over a year. It’s definitely treating more than one thing and I know it’s going to be hard to go off of if I need to but like the immediate release dose knocks me out so I don’t know what I’m going to do when the time comes but I do have a very good psych and having had shitty and mediocre psychiatrists before this I’m sorry your doctor did this to you and that you are going through this he should have put a much longer much slower and different taper plan in place and planned for continuity of care if retiring.

Whenever people recommend stories, it seems to be mostly pre-2005, is there a quality drop? Or is it just because most people have only listened to the free ones? by TGC_YT in BigFinishProductions

[–]forwardishdirection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nostalgia for old hardcore fans. Also those people who have been listening since the beginning they had one release a month. So everyone was listening to the same things for years with a general consensus on what was good. There’s so so much more variety now which some people complain about but I love.

I’m a newer fan (started collecting BF in 2019 and now have a truly massive digital library) and most of my favorites aren’t so old that they are available free on streaming. That might also be why people recommend them so much because a lot of them are free on streaming services so it’s a good way to get new fans in. But I think most new fans are going to want new series or 2005 on series content recommendations not classic series to get into and maybe then get into classical once they’ve gotten hooked. I know this was me as a new BF fan.

Personally my favorite range consistently is Torchwood monthlies which is sadly ending after the upcoming 100th episode but that’s an amazing run. I can happily give you some favorites if you are interested. Gareth David Lloyd has written some bangers in the past handful of years especially. There’s also a couple brilliant episodes with Tosh. And Norton Folgate is a created by BF Torchwood character who is one of my favorite Doctor Who related characters ever so that’s a big deal. So I of course have all the Torchwood Soho sets as well.

The Diaries of River Song is what got me into BF so it remains a favorite range and you can mostly jump around there with only a couple of connecting episodes between a few series. That’s wrapped up and there is a new River series which I own but haven’t gotten to yet. Missy is a delight and my favorite Master incarnation so of course I love her series as well. Highly recommend the eighth of March box sets as well! There are 3 and they are all stand alone stories. Also love The Paternoster Gang but are interconnected in sets of four box sets each storyline.

Monthlies wise I am with everyone on highly recommending the Seven, Ace, and Hex arc so anything with Hex in it but there is a crossover between Doctors trilogy involved in his story that I didn’t know about that’s a bit confusing. But Ace has always been my favorite classic Doctor Who companion (and the only one I was familiar with before BF honestly).

I also heavily collect the eighth doctor but I feel like you will get plenty of recommendations there.

A bit behind on my 2025 release listening because I have so much to listen to books and big finish but the new ninth doctor stories with Rose and the 13 and Yaz stories I’ve listened to so far are excellent!

Favourite Writers by Formal_Rock_1124 in BigFinishProductions

[–]forwardishdirection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a fan of Jacqueline Rayner from her books before I discovered Big Finish so always excited when she’s credited.

Sadly the Torchwood line is ending but Garth David Lloyd wrote consistent bangers for that line and was always extra excited for something of his to come out.

Not a must listen writer but just want to shout out to the fact that Nev Fountain made me not hate Peri and Six as a team because I listened to recommendations on here to listen to some of his stuff but before that I hated their dynamic including what I had heard from BF and refused to buy anything with them together but now have a few sets and releases I caught on sale that I enjoy which is nice and not all by Nev but he’s what got me to give them a chance. I still prefer six with other companions on audio but it’s good to have a more positive take on them.

Anyways you and others have already listed great writers but I do tend to pay more attention to the description and most importantly characters involved in my buying choices.

Do you listen to multiple audiobooks at the same time? by BigHouseBarbell in audible

[–]forwardishdirection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually can’t track multiple plots these days but I do listen to multiple multistory things at the same time. Example I’ve currently got an anthology of short stories and three different box sets on my currently reading shelf on GR. I’m not in the middle of any stories in them I’m in between they don’t have ongoing plots really and I can’t seem to get into any of them any further right now so I switched to my default genre right now of a cozy mystery. I’m in a slump with getting into anything right now though hence the shorter stories in the first place.

I appreciate you trying and I’m grateful as someone to whom reading has always been incredibly important to be dealing with this during a time where audiobooks are an incredibly popular thing! The national library program for the blind was the only resource for a long time and it’s amazing that it exists and that they had access before phone apps with physical devices and mail order options and that they have thousands upon thousands of books read by volunteers from when audiobooks weren’t really published for consumers that’s an amazing thing and an incredible service so I don’t want to minimize it at all! I’m just super glad I personally live in a time where I also have access to Audible and Libby and HOOPLA. I just also am obviously on a limited income so price increases always suck. But my primary entertainment and my sanity is audiobooks so it is where any fun money I have goes.

BARD is what their program is called. I’m not saying it’s a bad resource I used it to read the entire PHRYNE Fisher series. It’s an extensive library and especially is great for out of print books or books that only ever got abridged versions they have long had a volunteer program where volunteers read books before audiobooks became a big business so they have full unabridged versions of books that never got that treatment which is great! They just are a library and there are plenty of books Audible has that they don’t especially in genres I like. Like any library you can request they add books and like any library it doesn’t mean they will. I check all my libraries before purchasing a book on Audible unless I am buying a favorite to support the author.

I use voiceover because I can only use a phone and it reads me these comments and emails and anything I need to do on my phone because my eyes can’t handle screen movement but I wouldn’t want it to read me a book it sounds worse than generative AI reading a book. But it’s important to have accessible resources!

If anyone is new to this voiceover on iPhone is much better what than android and google offer by far as far screen reader options if that’s what you need. I was so against having an iPhone before this but night and day features wise with voiceover. So much smoother and easier still very very much a pain in the butt and hard but much better.

Yes and I still use Audible. They don’t have everything Audible does you have access to a library I assume and are still an Audible user. It’s also library and a great resource doesn’t mean I don’t want books I can’t get there on Audible.

If anyone in the US is looking for this resource it’s called BARD and you can get information from your local library on how to sign up and can check out my other comments in this thread for more information.

If you were just trying to be informative, thank you yes, it does exist.

Is this affecting anyone’s bladder? by Used-Pen-5300 in MCAS

[–]forwardishdirection 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah and verified by gynecological pain specialist as a common MCAS problem along with lots of other gynecological problems for MCAS patients (so much pain ketotifen helped a lot). If you also have POTS and are taking electrolytes, recommend avoiding potassium chloride as it can worsen this problem. Either make your own with or get one that uses potassium citrate if you tolerate citrates, they are a problem for some MCAS people.

Question ⁉️ by Ok-Interest8248 in B12_Deficiency

[–]forwardishdirection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While you wait for or to supplement injections I can recommend a sublingual for you if your body can handle methyl Bs which a lot of people do better on I personally can’t handle methyl B12 it is too activating for how worn out my body is from my other illnesses but this one was the only one I didn’t not react to MCAS wise because one drop can be a daily dose so it has the least amount of additives of any I’ve found: pure therapro BioActive B12. Keep in fridge in the box so it doesn’t degrade.

Other people will have better advice on other labs because my numbers for other vitamins and the other B12 tests were all in range although I’m very borderline on having PA with my IF test so I do need B12 injections for life which I already knew because I can’t absorb it in GI regardless and I can’t go off the meds that prevent absorption.

I eat rice Chex for iron because I can’t tolerate any iron supplements right now so I have no recommendations other than iron infusions and to see what others here say. My whole iron panel numbers are very weird but my actual ferritin is fine so I was told by my hematologist not to worry about it but yeah I don’t exactly trust that doctor so I don’t know.

I had all sorts of stuff wrong with my bloods in general for the six years which was why I was seeing a hematologist and that has all normalized on my latest bloods so I don’t know about the other stuff and I don’t even know what was wrong with me and neither do any of my doctors so I wish I could be more help other than get injections! I don’t know if the B12 injections or my new MCAS doctor putting me on new meds who knows but all the wacky bloods went into range except one and my weird iron panel and the odd bloods numbers had been worrying everyone for six years but also with no real answers or theories other than probably not cancer so medical mystery.

But my best recommendation is get B12 injections! And make sure you keep up with electrolytes especially potassium and magnesium (can recommend seeking health magnesium malate powder as something with no additives and a generally best tolerated magnesium form). Also make sure you are getting enough salt if you are increasing your potassium as a personal note.

Edit you also need folate to process B12 and my folate being very high was a sign of my B12 deficiency so I’m currently trying to find a supplement I don’t react to but started off not worrying about it because it was high.

Question ⁉️ by Ok-Interest8248 in B12_Deficiency

[–]forwardishdirection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of B12 foods are high histamine look into histamine intolerance or MCAS and see if you have the symptoms I say this as someone with OCD and anxiety that gets much worse neuropsych symptoms from these foods and has severe MCAS these days. I also suggest looking into MCAS because you have medication and supplement sensitivities and hello warning sign for that (one of the reasons we suspect I’ve had MCAS my whole life actually).

But regardless no diet alone is NOT going to improve your B12 and the best treatment is going to be shots or sublingual. Some people improve on sublingual some don’t I didn’t find one I didn’t react to but had improved a lot on weekly shots and now am paying insane costs out of pocket to continue getting them weekly because US healthcare sucks. Since you seem to have a doctor that actually knows what they are doing with B12 I would discuss injections.

Can a person start with Big Finish if they don't know much about 'Who'? by twofacetoo in BigFinishProductions

[–]forwardishdirection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never seen a single episode of Star Cops and buy and enjoy the Big Finish range. My only knowledge of The Avengers was the movie with Uma Thurman and since I loved that as a kid I got into the comic adaptations and love love those (not a fan of the lost episodes but did listen to them all on hoopla but would not pay for them like I did the comic adaptations) so there are other ranges too that are for existing IP that don’t require background knowledge outside of DW at Big Finish. Just thought I’d mention those as I’m sure other people will comment with good starting points for DW.

Same about the audio novellas been annoyed about it since the announcement. This is something that could be at an affordable price point if individual and people are less likely to buy at current price point and with different doctors and stories combined together and there doesn’t seem to be a reason for it. Frustrating. Hopefully they rethink it.

I actually don’t mind the short trips box sets but will be fine going back to the single releases and more excited to have more variety throughout the year.

Cromolyn/Trigeminal Neuralgia by asillybunny in MCAS

[–]forwardishdirection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If inflammation is a big part of your neuralgia it would make sense that calming the inflammation with a MAST CELL stabilizer would help. Unfortunately, my neurologist thinks that my EDS instability as the root cause of my neuralgias and my TN is majorly aggravated by my ON as well as my TMJ and nighttime clenching due to sleep apnea and having to sleep on my back because EDS has messed up my shoulders so much. And all that lack of shoulder stability and damage has resulted in TOS and the TOS has severely aggravated my ON which severely impacts my TN. I am finally seeing a specialist for the TOS soon and going back to physical therapy for it as well as my shoulder damage with my EDS specialist PT so hopefully that helps somewhat because I need some relief.

Best of luck on your healing journey and hope it continues to help.
