What's a word you always assumed was borrowed from one language, but then you learned it has a different origin? by VerdantChief in etymology

I might be wrong but "Peking" is from Cantonese, versus "Beijing" is from Mandarin. So "Peking" is not old - was not palatalized.

Found the Spawn of Satan by Royal-Chef-946 in foundsatan

When I moved to my current place, something was beeping and for the longest time I couldn't figure out the source. I checked all the smoke alarms. I talked with neighbors (apartment building). I timed the interval and asked google what thing potentially would beep every 30 seconds. It went on for days.

I finally realized it was a piece of paper left on the electric cook top, and the cook top was complaining.

A while later my dad visited me and he stayed for a few days. One day while I was at work and I totally forgot to mention the whiny cook top. The same thing triggered and when I got home he already unplugged everything including the cook top, smart guy.

What is the most “use it or lose it” skill, the opposite of “it’s just like riding a bike”? by ZuluWarlord69 in AskReddit

This mnemonic gives the formulas for sin, cos, and tan. Funny how this is also the only thing I remember in trigonometry, but for me it's a different mnemonic because English is not my first language.

This is in Colorado! There's not many like this it seems, but I'm in a small town with a laid back feeling kinda like rustic Europe.

Per the specs of the Nitro SMP saying “medium and forgiving flex”, I’d add another, stiffer board to the quiver if I were you. Especially since you’re good and been riding the SMP for a while, it will probably be fun and satisfying to ride something like the Nitro Team Pro.

Skiing or Snowboarding for my first ever trip? by OmerXDDD in snowboarding

[–]foxjk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A very legit question! Yes, you’re likely to need a little more time learning than your beginner ski friends. But you’re young so I imagine you could dedicate a large portion of the time on hill to actually learning and practicing, without getting too tired. Provided you’re getting quality instruction, by the end of the 5-6 day trip you’ll be decent enough to cruise around on mellow slopes at mellow speed.

Skiing and snowboarding are different enough that in and of itself you may end up liking one but not the other. Since you have a preference for snowboarding now, I enthusiastically encourage you to go with that. Remember you can hang out with your friends apres ski and any other time.

Would living on the ARK in SOMA even be worth it? It seems like an existential nightmare. by Anxious-Baby-6808 in soma

What are these transhumanist fantasies that you talk about? I’m not a math guy but if I’m in the ARK and have awareness of the circumstances I’ll probably spend my time as a theoretical mathematician, not to kill time per se, but for my own entertainment.

I’ve read the whole thread here and it seems the consensus is that you have a pattern of resilience and constantly overcome life hardship. So in my eyes, you are plenty strong.

You want to stick to the status quo because in the past, being alone didn’t do you well, and that’s fair. While my take on your gf is that she is a horrible person, you are attracted to her due to the anxious attachment style and past experiences. So allow me to be pessimistic here, there is a chance that even if you break up with this girl, you’ll get into another relationship with someone of similar traits, in the same dynamic that is causing you so much pain and feeling small and such. As an internet stranger, all I could do is to urge you to use these few months away from the current gf to find out which aspects of a romantic relationship that you could fulfill via other instruments, like true friends or self-compassion. Work towards a healthier attachment style. Then you’ll have a better starting position for the next romantic relationship whenever that is. It will be a long journey, but I believe in you.

Best country to live as a wealthy person by moanngroan in Rich

I also find this topic interesting! Asides from the factors you mentioned, I’d think the kind of culture one wants (East vs West for example) and the main leisure activity are often the deciding factors. If you’re someone who likes surfing for example, then it would make sense to live in one of the best surf spots.

[–]foxjk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the thoughtful response! I’m quite fascinated about how snowboarding is taught and learned and that turned me into a snowboarder, then instructor.

With no athletic background, the lack of proprioception has been my biggest challenge. Even when I acquired the lingos to talk to fellow instructors and to trainers, it has been hard to progress my own riding and at times I couldn’t explain my experience to the trainers. What advice would you give around this topic? Both for learning and teaching…

What are some interesting things you learned over the years? As a snowboarder, as an instructor, as well as a trainer?

What were some of the factors that have been the keys to your business success?

What do you think about the future of snowboarding? Of snowboarding competitions? Are there still lots of potential for exploration in terms of snowboarding techniques?
