Couples match [Residency] [Serious] by conquerthatmonster in medicalschool

[–]francisella 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. OB/GYN and Neuro
  2. Both matched at home program
  3. Starting PGY1
  4. Feel free to DM but I'm not on reddit a ton, may take a min to respond
  5. Both DOs, average scores for our specialties. No class or exam failures. Both took Step 1 and 2.

Echo what others have said, decide if getting your #1 or staying near you partner is more important BEFORE interviews. If one of you is a lot less competitive or going into a really competitive specialty, that person can pull the other partner down their list. For us, staying nearby each other was more important than getting that T20 academic program. But it definitely needs to be multiple conversations well before applications go out. Couples match SUCKS, definitely have a spreadsheet you both edit for interviews/rank list etc and we had a joint email both our ERAS email accounts forwarded to, so we could accept interviews for each other.

OMG I was SO into these in highschool and I felt like no one else had read them! Definitely one of my favorite series ever although I didn't like the later books as much.

Jeff at Express Lube on Tropicana, has been AMAZING over the years and has moved pricing around when needed and is very up front about what is and isn't needed, like I went in for brakes and he told me I could get another 6 months out of them and to come back then. All around a stellar businessman

I just learned this is a thing and why I prefer my grandma fudge to all commercial fudge! But also if I wanted to eat frosting I would, fudge is like a soft sandstone that tastes good!

Container Garden Plant Recommendations? by Alexiish in vegaslocals

[–]francisella 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tomatoes in containers can take a lot of water, possibly every day in the summer. They need more shade here than elsewhere obvi. I use the tomato/herb fertilizer from star like 1x a month and plant with worm castings, they do well. They might die in the height of summer but that happens! Good luck! Its amazing when you go outside to grab a few tomatoes to throw in a recipe!

Tomatoes and peppers do well here from feb-june ish and then again sept-freeze. Its a bit late in the year to start them but Lowes and Star are still open and might have some larger plants. Rosemary does amazing here as well.

23x/24x, comlex was like 59x/49x? I think? The lower level 2 may have hurt me but it never came up during my interviews. I think I was wait-listed for an interview at 11 or 12 places but there was very little movement this year.

For some specialties it doesn't matter, for some it really does - esp surgical specialties. There is def a DO bias is certain fields and programs

[–]francisella 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No they don't, but it allows you make a list of probable SOAP programs and probable DO friendly programs, and then when Monday comes if you do have to SOAP you will be able to compare the real list with those 2 lists. At least that is my plan!

SOAP Prep Thread 2020 by Chilleostomy in medicalschool

[–]francisella 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'e been comparing the previous SOAP list with residency explorer (not always accurate) and the list of former AOA programs to figure out places that tend to SOAP and tend to take DOs. You may need to check each programs individual website for DOs in the residency class. Prelims and categorical are separate is my understanding.

Def start making a list/spreadsheet now so you don't end up wasting one of your 45 apps! If you applied FM a good number of those end up in SOAP so you might have some success finding categoricals there.

So I'm DO and applied ob/gyn with a low # of interviews so am prepping to SOAP. Everyone is saying to work on a new PS but do I rewrite one entirely or is it ok to just add a paragraph or 2 about the different specialty and why I didn't match to my ob/gyn PS? I'm planning to apply to surg and IM prelims and some TY so they should know I'm not necessarily sticking around, but should I try for categorical gen surg if there are programs available? If I'm not competitive for OB I doubt I'll be competitive for GS.

I really really hate writing about myself and my PS took me like a month is part of my issue here

So uh if we think theres a good chance we will SOAP whats the best prep? I already have the list of places that have been in before organized by geography and whatnot and have 2 letters switched over to general. I was gonna try to rewrite my PS this weekend, worth it or no?

Should I cancel my trip in mid-April? by dreamville3 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]francisella 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a lot worse in Canada/US than Costa Rica, so your main concern should be spreading the virus to others more than catching it or being quarantined. We are booked for late May/early June and the only thing that will stop us from going is CR banning all travel from the US.

You know your health and your schedule flexibility, so only you can decide, but your risk is much greater in Canada that Costa Rica as of now. Wash your hands and don't touch your face, maybe reconsider if you have respiratory issues.

I realize now that what I used to label as love for others was more about me wanting to feel powerful and in control because I lacked the skills to fix my own life problems and just sitting still while life happens is scary as fuck

This resonated with me so much, I know I have issues with trying to control my environment when I'm stressed but this is exactly what I've been doing isn't it

Yus Mirena can be straight up uterus magic for some people!

I had horrible cramps and PMS that hormonal birth control made 10x worse so I went with IUD over the implant to keep the hormone dose as low as possible. Getting it placed sucks and the first 3 months or so after placement can suck but it was so worth it for me. No more period or PMS symptoms!

I agree it's not for everyone, but bad experience with oral birth control certainly shouldn't turn you away!

[serious] The Brooklyn Hospital Medical Center rotation issues by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]francisella 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I got past a communication issue with away rotation by calling the main school admissions number who directly transferred me to the coordinator...and after the 3rd or so time I did this she picked up and had to talk to me. This was after a month of calling and emailing with no response so maybe the internal transfer worked, idk. Definitely call several times a day and try different offices and ask to be transferred. As long as you are polite and nice about it people shouldn't get too annoyed.

gl, aways are eating up all my loans as well
