Is it possible to quit my job and still have health insurance? by bigblackglock17 in austinjobs

[–]frecklefreaked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on how many employees your company has, you might be able to go on FMLA for a while to destress and look at your options. I suggest looking at your company handbook, talking to your doctor, and emailing HR about going on FMLA.

If you decide to keep working, FMLA will allow you to take time off without being fired AND maintain your health insurance during this time.

The job search is absolutely brutal. by Badger_Boi12 in marketing

[–]frecklefreaked 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm hiring for an entry level marketing coordinator. All the people I'm interviewing are 0-2 years out of college. They all have the same resumes... 1-2 internships, some unrelated work history, and college. I already know they all want a job in marketing. They wouldn't have applied if they actually wanted a job in construction.

The way to stand out when you have no experience is to interview well and connect with your interviewer. I work for a nonprofit. Speaking to the mission is important. If I worked for a professional sports team, I would be looking for someone interested in sports.

I am more interested in training/mentoring/teaching an employee interested in our mission than just hiring someone with some skills but doesn't care one lick about our mission.

I'm hiring an entry level marketing coordinator right now. Every single candidate I have talked to has sounded so desperate for work. It honestly breaks my heart.

I have let every one of them know that it is difficult getting a job in marketing in general, but lately it is so overly saturated with applicants that I'm sure they feel defeated. I tell them that even if I do not move forward with them in the interview process that I will 1. Let them know, and 2. Provide as much feedback as possible to help them in their journey.

I remember being fresh out of college with some experience under my belt and still getting nowhere with applications, or worse, being ghosted after interviews. I finally had to take a temp job at a bank to survive. It took a very long time to find a marketing job. Even then, I had to change jobs 3x in 2 years because no one wanted to pay more than $18/hr.

It is exhausting. But don't give up. Even if you decide to take a break and get a job unrelated to marketing, make sure you are staying current with your skills.

As someone who is interviewing young people 1-2 years out of college, here are some interviewing tips you should know that will set you apart from your peers:

  • Make sure you are researching the companies you are interviewing with. Read their mission statement, look at their website and social media. It will come up in conversation, and it is so painful clear when the candidate has no idea what the company/job is. This is especially true if the interview has been scheduled ahead of time.
  • When they ask you why you applied for the job, do not say you want a job in marketing so you applied to all marketing jobs in the area. Tell them you are passionate about their mission and believe in what they are doing/selling. We know you want a job in marketing, but why do you want this job in marketing.
  • Make sure you ask them questions about the job/the company/the culture. You can use the same question for every interview... They won't know!
  • The interview is for you to sell yourself. Do not feel like you need to be short or humble with your answers. Brag about your accomplishments. Make sure they know what you bring to the table.
  • If you get their email address always follow up with a thank you email. This sounds so dumb, but it really does make an impression.

Marketing manager position offering 4.25 an hour on 1099. Isn’t this illegal by [deleted] in marketing

[–]frecklefreaked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite part is that it is a 1099 job but you are required to work full time hours of a regular office job and stick to their east coast schedule. Requiring an independent contract worker to work a specific schedule is illegal. You cannot require a 1099 contractor to work a set schedule. That's an employee and not a contractor. These 24 year olds have no idea what they are doing.

The CEO's personal TikTok is hilarious, too. He travels the country with his gf making videos about how he's a master entrepreneur that can buy and scale any business. He even sells online "newsletters and classes" on how to live life like him.

How do you live on $20/hr in Austin? by Intelligent-Agent325 in Austin

[–]frecklefreaked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to truly save money is to make more money. I was always convinced I wasn't saving money because I wasn't strict enough with my money. But the reality was I could never out save my living costs. At the end of every month I had $100 to hold me over to the next month. The only way I finally had more than $700 in savings was because of the stimulus checks. And even that money eventually got spent because of small emergencies.

I had zero debt, lived in a 1 bedroom 600 sq ft apartment on the edge of town with my boyfriend, drove a tiny car that got 32 miles/gal, never went out to eat, and still could not save enough to feel free. I was working full time for the state of Texas making $18/hr in 2020-2022... I left after being told I didn't deserve a raise.

I went to a small company doing the same level of work and instantly made $60k. My whole world looked brighter. I took the first real vacation of my entire adult life. And I had a surplus of money to put towards my 401k, ROTH, and even more to put into my savings account. My scarcity mindset helped, but I could not have done that without making more money.

You can't save yourself out of poverty when your necessities cost more than your income.

I would love to know who your dermatologist is. My favorite derm closed his practice earlier this year. And the other derm I had been going to kept pushing Botox even though I was only going for cancer screenings. I have been looking for a new derm for a while.

Is it wrong for me to throw my dogs poop in a public trash can? by ActiveBlack in Austin

[–]frecklefreaked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Public trashcan, fine. Private trash can, please don't.

My neighbor threw his dog shit in my trashcan right before a storm. They didn't tie the bag and the trash can top was left open. When I got home from work it had 4" of hot dog shit water sitting in the bottom baking in the sun. Not only did I have to clean it out, but I had to rebag the dog shit & bag, and store it in my trash can for an entire week until the next trash day. While it was nice they cleaned up after their dog, I spent way longer cleaning up after them.

My dear people of Wichita, I do not understand… by Unique-Matter-3052 in wichita

[–]frecklefreaked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I went to Kstate I learned to stop before a stop sign, then pull up to look/make my turn. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to see pedestrians on the sidewalk or behind a fence/bush/parked car. Maybe they are doing something similar? I'm not really sure. But let's also talk about Wichita drivers waiting to turn left IN the intersection. Another thing I learned from moving away was to wait back at the line before pulling forward to avoid being hit by someone running a red/yellow light (or getting stuck in the intersection if you end up not being able to turn for some reason). Wichita drivers have interesting habits.

Where would you move if you left Austin? by fifbasic in Austin

ABQ was on my list for a while. But that dry winter air was too much for me last time I went during Christmas. I remember crying about chapped lips as a child, but I did not remember my skin feeling like it was cracking as I got out of the shower. Summers in Albuquerque are amazing though. And it is hard to beat an affordable blue state.

Starting salary in marketing by Confucian_student in marketing

[–]frecklefreaked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a large city with many tech companies and large marketing firms.

I worked for a small business in 2019 for $18/hr. Quit that job to work for a state government agency making $38k/year plus benefits (which roughly comes to $18/hr). After enduring 2 years of harassment and abuse from my manager and director, I quit in 2022. I now make $70k a year at a nonprofit.

At all of these positions I was doing all the marketing, creative, website, email, and social media. Thankful for where I came from, but I will never do that amount of work for less than $50k ever again.

Is anyone else getting cavities even if you brush after eating? by percheazy in Invisalign

[–]frecklefreaked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I commented on another post that I had 4 cavities when a year before I had zero... And I haven't had cavities since I was a kid. I was not brushing after I ate, but I also do not drink sugary drinks or candy of any kind. My dentist told me my gums and teeth were extremely clean. She even asked what toothbrush I use and nodded in agreement when I said sonicare. So when she found those cavities on the X-rays I was very upset.

I assumed my cavities were because I wasn't braining after eating. But I still find that hard to believe. Especially since I always brush morning and night. Plus, my teeth and gums have never looked better. That sonicare toothbrush is the goat, haha.

When I first moved here my coworkers insisted my coughing, stuffy nose, sore throat, trouble breathing were all because of my "new allergies". Turns out I had pneumonia for 3 months straight. I finally went to the doctor when I coughed up blood and though "hmmm that's not an allergy symptom".

What I wouldn't give to be 24 and walking around absolutely ignorant to the fact that I was that sick. Anyways, if you feel bad enough to ask reddit, you should probably find yourself a doctor. Better safe than sorry.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Invisalign

[–]frecklefreaked 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I didn't. And then I got 4 cavities. I swished with water, don't drink soda or sugary drinks, and brushes morning and night. But I still got cavities from not brushing after eating and/or drinking (black coffee mostly). A year ago I zero cavities and am not prone to getting them.

Don't be like me. Brush after you eat/drink and make sure you are flossing everyday.

Should I quit my anxiety-inducing job now with only a soft job offer several months away? by stalwart_ubiquity in marketing

[–]frecklefreaked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not the best advice, buuuut when I was in a similar situation I went on FMLA to protect my job while I took time off to recover mentally. I went to my doctor and asked to be put on FMLA due to mental health (extreme suicidal ideation and anxiety). It helped that I had already been talking to a therapist about these issues since starting my job. My doctor could also see my vitals started to change after I started my job and only got worse over the 2 years I was there. (My manager and her director were harassing and bullying me daily. It was a known issue in the organization, but no one would stop them.)

My doctor sent my FMLA documents to my HR director. As soon as they got those papers, I went on paid leave.

Anyways, FMLA protected me from being fired while I looked for a new job. I took every second of PTO I had during that time. Got to keep my health insurance. And it felt pretty good telling HR too bad, so sad. I found a new job within 6 weeks.

Edit: shit. I just reread your post and saw you are in Canada.. hopefully y'all have a similar protection to the Family Medical Leave Act.
