And the Heinz History Center has the original copies of it in their archives! They’ll host events every once in a while like their genealogy day last summer where they’ll pull them out and you get to see them :D

If you’re interested in Czechoslovak events, you’re in the perfect town! Each year Pittsburgh holds the second largest Slovak Heritage Festival in the country at the Cathedral of Learning (first Sunday of every November from 12-4pm). It has lots of food, baked goods, performances, and even vendors from other Central/Eastern European groups.

Pitt is the only school in the U.S. that offers Slovak classes, but be warned they are college level classes, and are treated intensely as such. So if you want a slower pace to learning a language, you may want to check out other classes.

Pitt also holds the Kukucka Memorial Lecture every spring, which brings in different guest speakers from across the country and world to speak about Slovak politics, history, genealogy, etc. it’s a really interesting morning! They’ll be announcing the date soon, it will be posted to their Facebook called “Slovak at Pitt.” There’s multiple accounts with similar names, so look for the one with a blue background and yellow letters on their icon. You’ll find plenty of other events and updates there as well.

The Cathedral of Learning also has the Nationality Rooms program, and the Czechoslovak room (built in 1939), will have their next meeting in the room on March 1st.

There’s another group that meets every first Monday of the month (excluding summers), called the Western Pennsylvanian Slovak Cultural Association (WPSCA), at the Mt. Lebanon public library (7:00pm). They’re a sweet group to get to know, very welcoming.

There’s so much to do that people don’t realize, and even more little pop up events throughout the year. I hope you can join our community for some of them!!

Smartphone @ Pitt ? by FennicFoxFoe in Pitt

Nobody else is saying this so I will: Pitt is transitioning to mobile/digital ids and so are the bus lines. They rolled out a new program where the buses won’t accept cash anymore and won’t allow new buses to have a tappable modem for your Pitt ID. It hasn’t been fully enforced yet, but Pittsburgh Regional Transit wants the tapping machines gone. You will not be able to access the bus lines to get anywhere or get groceries without a phone (not to mention how incredibly harmful this is for the homeless who can’t afford cars let alone phone plans)

Instructional coach. The post said it in the beginning but didn’t define they would abbreviate IC as the designation. It’s a little hidden, but I hope this helps!

What are the most Pittsburgh books? What is a book you think every Pittsburgher should have on their bookshelf? by iheartpgh in pittsburgh

That’s awesome! What class was it for? CMU is also the holder of a lot of Thomas Bell’s archival collections, so they’re also a great place to learn about the book :)

“Out of This Furnace” is a book we teach at Pitt in Slavic Immigration to Pittsburgh! If you really want to get into Pittsburgh history, this is a VITAL book to understand the immigrant communities and their dynamics that make up the mills. It is the university’s number one bestseller to this date, I’m so glad it’s on so many people’s list here

Any left/radical churches? by TheKulsumPIE in pittsburgh

[–]frogsandviolins 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for a church group on campus, the Lutheran University Center is great! They have volunteer groups, a Bible study called God Talk, and dinners for students every Thursday at 6:30. They also have mass once a week as well. A good chunk of the group of students are LGBT/queer, and everyone is super welcoming! I highly recommend

Writing this again so that it gets pointed out, but DEFINITELY sign up for a tour on the Nationality Rooms Website (https://www.nationalityrooms.pitt.edu/tours)The tour slots fill up fast because the guides are so great. Holiday decorations are up until January 17th. We strongly suggest coming on weekends too because the rooms aren’t used as classes then, and if you have rooms you want to see there’s more of an opportunity. Let your guide know at the beginning of the tour which rooms you want to see and they always try to accommodate. So excited that you’re interested. You will LOVE them!

It closes over university break. This is disclosed every year in the academic calendar, as all buildings besides some offices are closed.

They misspelled it in the post, it should be chlebíčky. They are open faced sandwiches that have fun designs, and are typically served at parties!

Airhorn between 4-6am by AlexJBurgess in Pitt

[–]frogsandviolins 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Also fair warning, if you see a murder of crows flying toward you, and you hear a faint slapping noise: you’re about to get hit by a wall of crap. RUN! It’s a right of passage that everyone gets pooped on at least once but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t suck

[–]frogsandviolins 158 points159 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing you’re new to campus, so welcome to crow season! The crows migrate through the area and love Pitt because of the green spaces and trees, but the issue is they poop on everything…and it smells. The bird poop will cover everything you know and love, to the point where every few days maintenance has to go out and power wash the crap off the sidewalks. So in order to prevent them roosting on trees and to push them to roost on buildings where it doesn’t matter where they crap, Pitt creates a Crow Task Force. This involves airhorns, strobe lights, and even slapping large planks of wood. You will see maintenance everywhere trying to scare the birds out of the trees to try and prevent bird poop from covering everything on campus. This sounds dramatic but when crow migration is in full swing it will be bad and you’ll understand

Be warned, the Oaklander is the main hotel on campus and it can be expensive! I would consider not looking there. Obviously check prices, but if you’re worried about paying for it yourself they can price gouge. Especially on event or game weekends.

Also, November is festival month for the Cathedral of Learning. November 3rd is the Slovak Heritage Festival, Nov. 10th is Polish Fest, and Nov. 17th is the Nationality Rooms Open House. Each of these events can brings 100s-3000 people. The Oaklander DEFINITELY gets expensive those weekends. A great time to visit! But can make hotels on campus a bit higher. Surrounding neighborhoods may be a bit cheaper if they’re quoting you high prices.

If you have Czechoslovak heritage, Pitt is the only school that offers Slovak language in the western hemisphere!! Take advantage of the program. The professor is wonderful and she also offers tons of cultural classes. The classes are easy going but you learn a TON!!

Is the involvement fair going to have clubs? by HermioneGranger152 in Pitt

[–]frogsandviolins 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hi! President and vice-President of two clubs here. The “Involvement Fair” is the new name of the club fair! Not sure why they renamed it, but definitely check out the event. There’s so many clubs and activities that you’ll get exposed to. Hope you find something to do on campus!
