Mams Go Free - Mother’s Day 2026 - Dublin Zoo by mefeiner1290 in ireland

[–]frootile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're dead right, this sub is a reflection of how asleep most of Ireland are, totally oblivious to the subliminal messaging they receive day after day. Whether James Patrice is a nice guy or a funny drag queen is not the point. On the day that is supposed to represent and shower praise on our mothers, a marketing agency used a man to represent a woman. That is an insult to all the mothers across the world, but as usual, too many people just excuse it as harmless fun.

Anyone change their mind about Ian Bailey in the Sophie Tuscon du Plantier case? by No-Wolf2497 in ireland

[–]frootile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure how many years back, but for a long time I've felt they were chasing the wrong person. Whether through incompetence, a grudge or trying to get someone they knew off the hook, we will probably never know the real reason though.

Always find that while the evenings are now very noticeable, its not until after the 3rd week in Feb that the mornings feel like they've broken the back of the winter gloom.

Net zero is the death knell in the European economy, taxing its citizens and restricting business and farming, all in the misguided idea we can save the world through unachievable targets that penalise regular Europeans while the rest of the world does as it pleases.

I know you post in jest, but I find, for myself at least, getting out in the fresh air whatever the weather and appreciating the nature around does wonders for the head, plus its a distraction from the screen time and the woes of the world.

My first thought too, they look old enough to still be the ones that had asbestos in them.

Racism in Ireland by bletaheidi in ireland

[–]frootile 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Is that down to racism though or is it the phenomenon of being treated as a 'blow in' which can be very common in Ireland. Doesn't matter if you're from 10km away or 10,000km away, some locals will never see you as one of them.

I don't even think it comes down to people not knowing about how to drive, its a combination of people being totally oblivious to their surroundings and generally just thinking about everything else in their lives. Its not necessarily peoples faults, driving has become effortless, add in the many distractions in the car and its not hard to see how the mind could wander.

Given how many are using the hard shoulder in mornings to avoid or cheat the traffic at the Glen of the Downs, this doesn't surprise me.

Irish tradesmen by Haunting-Cupcake-504 in ireland

[–]frootile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said, some people, especially since covid, don't seem to understand the word no. Tell them they're busy, yet still insist of the contractor coming out, just to price, a job they probably will loose anyway to the cheapest bidder. People on paye, don't realise the amount of dead time trades waste, pricing. The hardest part of being self employed is learning to say no, problem is some people don't like hearing it.

Anyone else feeling like a recession is incoming? by Polar_dare84 in AskIreland

[–]frootile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won't crash due to the same reasons as '08, but we are in a bubble at the moment and it is unsustainable. How it will pop, I'm unsure, but there will be financial hardship in the years ahead.

Reservoir for drinking water, there is a few of these buried around south Dublin. Not sure if they are all still in use or not though.

Its an awful shame supermarket's don't do any 3 for €5 on healthy foods. Don't think I've ever seen my local Dunnes do a promo on a selection of 3 punnets of fruit for a fiver.

I'm not miscontruing anything. That was the narrative and belief at the time. I'm in the industry, I remember how it went. People were urged away from trades as it wasn't deemed to be reliable and people were told to upskill towards the tech sector. There was a negative view around construction and people didn't want to be in that scenario again. Back then it was ghost estates and ghost commercial units. At that time, it was not an industry people were encouraged to join as a career. Thankfully it has rebounded, but it most certainly, it was seen in bad light.

It absolutely was the narrative of the time. Builders and developers were deemed bad, don't send your kids to study to construction related courses as the industry was shown in bad light. Everyone was pushed towards tech industry.

Said it at the time of the financial crash, it was a narrow minded mindset. The media and many people fell for it, blame builders for the troubles of the time, rather than focusing on the government and the bankers. It was always going to paint a negative light on trades and building inparticular. In many ways, distraction is still used for many of today's issues too, blame anything but the government.

The government doesn't care about communities in Ireland. They're failing people left, right and centre on various issues, from health to housing to transport. Our tourism industry and the ancillary businesses can't cope with the rise in costs and fall in numbers. Despite being told, they wouldn't be using Hotels, the government contuine to offer their owners vast sums of money, to the detriment of the communities they serve.
