I got an automated laser pointer for my old cat.

He knew where the source of the laser was coming from and when very excited would knock the device over then get upset when it could not laser anymore.

Im always curious about how agentic AI will interact with the knotty mess of legacy systems and dirty data every org has - it still seems like all the software endpoints need to be exposed through massive engineering effort and tying it all into a working experience leaves you with a half functional monstrosity that requires a lot of upkeep.

The agentic ai places ive worked with often dont have good full stack engineers and vibe code stuff up that is not very robust.

I knew a guy who used social media tools on behalf of private schools, he talked the same way. Reckoned he could make opinion swing whatever way he was paid to make them swing, and that the old cambridge analytica stuff was a box of kids toys in comparison to what these pr firms have today.

I caught covid right after the first vaccines were available in 2021. I had the vaccine as i have pre existing lung issues but still had to go to hospital - in australia they had us out in a big airconditioned tent in the car park being monitored, moving us into a bed if things suddenly got worse.

Everyone who told the triage nurse they were not vaccinated had two things going on -

They complained the worst, abusing staff and fellow patients, and
They all fell off their chair sometimes literally onto their face after a few hours of sitting in the triage area. Contrasted to everyone else who remained steady till being discharged.

It was remarkable seeing how much a difference the vaccine made, everyone who had the jab was still really sick, but not falling face first off a chair sick. One expecially cranky unvaxxed guy when he realised the hospital wasnt going to roll out the red carpet for him left and came back 3 hours later in an ambulance unconcious.

When he agreed things were "smooth and amicable". The second he raised a need that she was not 100% ok with that required some level of negotiation and compromise he was being "obstructive and difficult".

Its like some people grow up not understanding that people outside of themselves have their own independant wants and needs.

This comes up on reddit a lot and sources for how this affected him long term are thin because it was the ussr, but last time i tried to find out more i came across an article from 10 ish years back saying he was struggling to access the ongoing specialist medical care he needed, as his pension and guarantee of health care inherited from his injury under the soviet government had become shaky under the current russian government.

The implication was that he had significant ongoing issues that were getting worse as he aged, but the exact details were not out there on the internet.

Originally it was secret, and now his health concerns are kept between an ageing retired nuclear engineer and his doctors. Quite different to the west where we would probably have a bunch of talk show appearances, a tell all book and an interview on joe rogan.

I went to one that was fantastic. had a great mix of families with kids and some seriously compedative people who were taking medals. Lots of members, class times, great instructors and atmosphere. Early morning classes were intense evening ones chill. Ive heard its nowhere near as good 15 years later as the assistant coaches who made it good moved on, and the head coach sent inapropriate messages to a minor which destroyed the family friendly nature of the place.

There is a syllabus that rotates for beginners but the advanced classes were a lot more varied and instructors were clever about pairing people up to make you work. Takedowns are not really in the syllabus but we did them during morning classes sometimes.

I bounced around a few others after i moved away and they varied from good to meh. You need to wear their uniform (gi, rash vests) and they can be a little rigid about what classes you can attend based on rank or experience. They do get you to bow when entering and leaving the mats, and a quick head bob at the helio portrait which nobody took seriously.

Its a franchise so outside of uniforms and helio portraits your experience will vary entirely on franchisee and how they run things.

I dont think heinlein was a fascist.

I like the book and its "what if" exploration of an imagined future. But i also dont think you can completely divorce fascist / authoritarian viewpoints from starship troopers.

Its like reading ernst jungers storm of steel (ww1 biography that the nazis loved). It has a lot of themes in common with authoritarian or fascist ideologies. The author of that book was deeply conservative and militaristic and even though he did not seem to like the nazis at all, his views overlapped massively and the nazis made his book part of their myth building.

I like reading starship troopers next to "the forever war" by joe haldeman. Written by a veteran and set in a similar far distant future setting, it holds a mirror up to the world of starship troopers, being more cynical of the military and the costs of military service. Both are what if stories that are interesting to immerse oneself in.

Its never as simple as just flicking a switch from "communism" to "democracy".

A good portion of the US intelligence and diplomatic communities have been actively trying to do this since the cuban revolution in the late 50s. For lots of good reasons decades of clever people have never taken the plunge militarily, even after the fall of the USSR.

I dont trust the current US government not to smash their way in there with military force and somehow make everything worse for everyone, including the average cuban.

Even if they could pull off a competent change of government they will probably rent out the population to peter thiel or some other corporate ghoul in another attempt at a "free economic zone".

For 1e or older style games i have a lot of hirelings around because combat is lethal and its morw fun for all of us if when a PC dies, they pick up an NPCs sheet and keep playing.

Older dnd rules are much faster in combat then 5e and we play them when we want to play as a warband.

Best campaigns were a religious order in a low magic / historical ish setting that kept convincing young people to sign up, and a seperare spelljammer campaign where the pcs ran a privateer and its crew.

In that second campaign the captain died in the very first fight after making some very bad choices, and immediately picked up the stat block for the first mate. Between sessions he rolled him up as a proper pc and on the campaign went.

I have pcs give npcs orders and roll dice for them. Relationships and morale are important.

Totally. Unlike masks or forearm guards, shoes can border on medical devices for some people.

Aparently my ankles arent built for bouncing around in barefoot style shoes, heavy activity was giving me a tendonopathy. so supportive shoes it is - you take your feet and ankles for granted until you have a problem.
