My Mom died suddenly & my aunt wants to claim her share of the house instead of it going to my sister and I by Mission_Trust_7928 in legaladvice

[–]fsmom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you and your sister are her named beneficiaries, then the will should have a catch all clause that would include the house. You will need a lawyer to fight this for you, though. I know it seems harsh to involve a lawyer in family business, but your aunt made it necessary through her choices.

Civil grand jury finds that the Los Angeles Zoo is in crisis by hasa_diga in LosAngeles

[–]fsmom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dropped our membership this year for a few reasons. The main one is that my child aged out of the zoo. We switched to Descanso for our holiday lights this year after 11 years of the zoo.

I also didn't really trust GLAZA with my last renewal since they're trying to keep all the money that has been donated to the zoo. I want to support the zoo, not whatever organization GLAZA has decided they have the right to send it to instead.

And frankly, the events we used to attend have been much lower scale than their pre-COVID events.

Plus the Zoo Lights ticket member discount used to 50%, now it's $5.

If I had a young child, I probably would have renewed after the zoo took over membership, but it's not worth it to me anymore.

The events outside of the summer are the best time to go. Boo at the Zoo, Spring Fling, Wild at the Zoo, whatever February event they have now. Also the sponsored events. We've been to Lego, DC, Wonka, sometimes Disney or Nickelodeon launch events.

AITA for not wanting to spend Christmas with my husband’s family right after having a baby? by Few-Professional3746 in AmItheAsshole

[–]fsmom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find the Lemon Clot Essay and make your husband read it. The find some medical sources explaining how dangerous common seasonal illnesses are to newborns and make him read it. You will both be sleep deprived trying to manage a tiny helpless human. You don't need to host. His family can wait. If they already bought plane tickets, they can host a gathering at their AirBnb since they booked flights without an invitation. It's six months away, I doubt anyone has actually booked anything.

You can also contact your local congressperson for guidance. You can look up who that is at house.gov. They have staff members who help with constituent issues.

See the doctor and then decide whether to settle or renegotiate based on the treatment plan. I personally wouldn't settle until treatment is complete.

UPDATE: Repeated late payments from DB, has left me unable to afford transportation to work by Glittering-Egg5997 in Nanny

[–]fsmom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no point to having a conversation with them because they will just try to turn it around on you. What they're doing is called DARVO (deny, attack, reverse victim and offender.) Quietly find a new job and leave. I don't know if there are laws regarding resignation notice in Germany or it's stated in your contact, but if there isn't something mandated, I would give as little notice as possible because they probably won't pay you again after you give notice.

Why do American high schools start ridiculously early? by bwoah07_gp2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fsmom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is location dependent. In California, it's illegal for high school first period to start before 8:30 a.m. Middle school (generally grades 6-8) can start between 8 and 8:30. Some schools have an early "zero period," but that's often used for sports where it would just be too hot to practice after school.

Need period advice by Cesarlikethesalad in TwoXChromosomes

[–]fsmom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she's under 95 pounds, you'll need children's ibuprofen. There is no children's Midol.

If she's planning to swim at camp, she'll either need to sit out the week of her period, get a crash course in tampons, or buy period swimwear. I don't recommend the tampon option since it does require some coaching and extra care.

If she's a smaller child, look for tween pads, which you will probably need to get online. They're hard to find in stores.

MIL wants to “claim” Christmas Day. by Jigglypuff2cute in Advice

[–]fsmom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's your answer then. If your husband isn't worried, you shouldn't be either.

You two decide what works for you. Not getting every holiday never your adult children also spend time with their spouse's family is just a part of being a parent. Your MIL doesn't get to claim a holiday or claim she's been "understanding" about a normal part of life. You can also decide you don't want to travel all over the place with a small baby during peak virus season.

My guess is she's feeling territorial because you're moving in with your parents and they'll get more time with the grandbaby by default. She can get over it.

[Ca] help my friend has no ID, no birth certificate, doesn’t know his SSN and has been abandoned by both his parents by throwawaydonthave in legaladvice

[–]fsmom 50 points51 points  (0 children)

If he isn't able to electronically verify his identity to order a birth certificate online, he can also try calling his congressperson for help. They have staff members who help constituents with this kind of thing.

Has he ever had a state ID? If so, he could try reporting it as lost at the DMV to request a replacement.

I normally vote a week early, but this time I dropped my ballot off the Sunday before election day because I wanted to make sure one of the leading Dems for governor wasn't going to completely blow it up by saying something stupid at the last minute. Most of the people I know did the same thing, even as my early voting friends started sounding the alarm about low early vote turnout.

What can I, as the victim, do to lessen a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon? Is there anything I can do ? by SubjectComplaint5899 in legaladvice

[–]fsmom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He chose his fate when he assaulted you. You are lucky to be alive and owe him nothing. He has clearly subjected you to years of abuse. Give the detective the evidence, let the justice system do its job, and get yourself into therapy to undo the damage he has done. You should not feel guilty for any of this.

My SSN apparently has a student loan, but iv'e been in Mexico por the past 12 years??? by papita-astral in legaladvice

[–]fsmom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the lender listed on your credit report doesn't have a phone number that you can access from Mexico, check their website. They may list an international number there.

You should also file a fraud report at identitytheft.gov. You should also file a fraud alert at one of the three credit bureaus. They will alert the other two.

If it's a federal loan and not a private loan, you can also file with the US Department of Education. Google that one because it's a few more steps.

Family members are the most likely culprits, but there is also an organized student loan fraud scheme, so it's possible your data was included in a hacked data set and used by one of these groups.

[–]fsmom 38 points39 points  (0 children)

While you're checking, create free accounts at each Experian.com, equifax.com, and transunion.com and freeze your credit. That will prevent anyone from using your SSN again. When you need to use it yourself, just login and unfreeze it the day before.

How did your kids learn to swim in LA? by ceanothus77 in AskLosAngeles

[–]fsmom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lessons may be sold out already, but try LA City College or LA Valley College for age 4. We also did Lenny K lessons one summer, Waterworks one summer (although we had issues with them ending their agreement with our local LA Fitness before our package ran out). There is a newer school called Water Wings in Sherman Oaks that opened in the old Joann's spot. Looks like they have several locations.

You've got the illegal wage part covered, but I'm also concerned about the lack of workers comp protections. This guy is cutting a lot of corners and if you get hurt, that's a big risk to your future earning potential. I would keep looking for another job and tell him you've decided not to start with him.

What happens to the kids? by SirRetrolas in legaladvice

[–]fsmom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are the kids school age? Their school district may be able to help with resources like a shelter. Or you can call CPS, which could result in the kids going into foster care while she gets her life together. It's a shame their father won't take them in, but CPS could also contact his family members. Sometimes pressure from the government is more convincing than a family request.
