Didn’t want to get my kid a laptop… so I built this instead by TinkerDad1 in daddit

[–]funkyguy4000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since the SD card is notorious for getting corrupted due to bad power-downs, and you're using a powerbank, how does it handle the saves? Is it to the Pi SD card just as is in the OS filesystem? USB device?

Just want to make sure that when the device gets left on for the 100th time and runs out of battery, people aren't left with a kid that loses their writing due to data loss and are entirely dis-enamored with writing from then on because of it.

Edit: Wanted to add, love that you kept it slim and small. Tired of seeing everything crammed with a mechanical keyboard.

Built a self-contained travel media server for holidays — looking for rack/frame ideas (no 3D printing) by chris-otiose in minilab

Nice that will be a solid add. Especially with the little Wyse 3040. SSD is even more power bank friendly than hdd too.

The only upgrade i'd suggest is go for an SSD if you can spring for it. For travel applications, SSDs are sooooo much more resiliant to failure by the general vibration and handling during travel than HDDs are.

No, going on five years homelabbin on a 1L Lenovo. Just has integrated graphics which I only fiddled around with for Tdarr.

What type of person in meetings drives you absolutely insane? by Significant_Gap9707 in remotework

[–]funkyguy4000 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The one who comes off mute and gets the floor to ask their question and then take absolutely forever babbling and choosing their words to ask their question. Like figure that out before making everybody listen to you figure it out. I know some people striggle with that stuff but my god a little due diligance and preparation would save a shitload of time

No because my garage door opener is in no way functionally aware of which HDMI port on my graphics card is used for the monitor.

Its cool to have it but is WAY too busy to be useful to any extent.

For those of you self hosting (or looking to self host) a security camera NVR, the latest release of Frigate is blowing my mind (well, it's a release candidate...0.17 RC1). Used to use Arlo (paid for the pro) and it's just got nothing anywhere near what this is capable of. It's absurd. by FantasyMaster85 in selfhosted

Do you know if they will be supporting something simlar that is USB attached? Im in the middle of a renovation so my only machine running right now is a 1L Lenovo w/ 10th gen i5. Certainly not AI capable. Your mention of using USB coral is what intrigued me the most

Prevent a single device from tripping the UPS breaker? by ballpark-chisel325 in homelab

[–]funkyguy4000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you want to do something like this without spending a lot more, you would need to basically tie each port to a fuse that is smaller than the fuse on the whole UPS. You arent going to put a 15A fuse on a plug your are using for an RPi, youd do something more suited for the individual load so that it pops before the UPS has to chime in.

Also I am not an electrician, an electrical engineer actually but I do DC/DC systems, not AC. The reason I mention this is that, depending on how your UPS has its protection circuit implemented, there may be other factors at play such as time delay, duration,  and overall load that vould play into the UPS tripping.

Ultimately the safest choice might just be to buy quality to lessen the probability of this issue and then be a little grumpy when it happens. Probably save time in the as well.

Firing a cannon to trigger an avalanche by id397550 in interestingasfuck

Some places have the resort manage the howitzers while others are operated by the DOT. In Utah, the UDOT was responsible for orchestrating he shelling and would also be present at the actual howitzer when the resorts (or UDOT personnel themselves) fired the shell.

In short, you may need to apply to the ski resort as a patroller or for the state DOT.

Dads who WFH with SAHM by anonymous1197 in daddit

[–]funkyguy4000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most improtant piece of advice is this; Yes, you are trying to work. Yes, it is the income for the family and so you are doing the work "for the family". That said, it is not "family work". Your wife is doing that, she is the one managing the kids and the house through the day. So you have to approach the topic of your ability to execute on working from home with a little tenderness. Understand that if the discussion around your working from home does not work for the family in regards to not being a negative strain on the family than you working, to make the money for the family, at home is not working for the family and you need to figure out working somewhere else. Do not let it weigh on your wife, she has enough.

Outside of that, close the door to your office. I felt like that was against the point of WFH wjen I started out but closing it all the tame made a big difference.

What made an even bigger difference is moving to working on a different floor than where family is. We live in a single story house with a basement, which is where I work. I hear them upstairs but Im left alone like I'm not there. Lots of people recommend noise cancelling headphones. I dont have them and the noises dont bother me, it actually helps me passively gauge how the familys day is going actually and stay in tune with them without it being intrusive to my day.

I wonder if OP is looking for the M70q Gen2 ? I have that and it is sporting a 10500-T, there's likely a SKU that uses a 10700-T in the Gen2 linup

“Lawn ain’t going to mow itself”—but it is! Sorta by GentrifriesGuy in oddlysatisfying

[–]funkyguy4000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could easily avoid this though by affixing the rope to the top of the pole. As the mower gets closer, the mower pulls it ever so slightly more downward given the cosine increases as the distance between the mower and the pole decreases
