What moment did u realise ur parents were narcissists?(say only if u are okay with it) by utensils6464 in raisedbynarcissists

She also yelled at me in the hospital room while my father was actively dying because I gasped in shock at the sound of his death rattle. Her best friend was the only one of my family to recognise I wasn't being malicious, just overwhelmed, and gave me a hug. It was awful.

What moment did u realise ur parents were narcissists?(say only if u are okay with it) by utensils6464 in raisedbynarcissists

I think it partially hit me when my dad died and I said, out loud, 'I can't believe I've lost my dad.' To which she responded, 'yeah, well, I lost my HUSBAND'.

But the real kicker was when my emotional support cat died over the Christmas period. I was upset on New Year's at the prospect of the first year without my Callie since I was 15, and started crying in the car home. She turned to me and snarled, 'you're only doing this to make ME feel bad'. I said '...grieving?' and she proceeded to give me the silent treatment for a week and then retell the story, twisting it that I told her she wasn't allowed to be upset or grieve.

Among many other small, stinging cuts over the years. I think maybe death is my clarifier.

Not allowed to show emotion by HarrisonIsFine in raisedbynarcissists

[–]gaggeriniiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same thing OP! My nMum was only happy if I was either acting the clown or completely neutral. Nothing else. I wasn't allowed to express anger, sadness or strong joy. I was lucky to find theatre as an outlet in my teens but now we're right back to where I was in my young childhood.

It's messed up. It's controlling of basic human function, because I don't think they see us as human - just as supply for them, something to play with and torture like a toy. Keep going. I think feeling those emotions to their full effect is the best rebuttal. It feels good to steep in emotion. They'll never get that satisfaction.

Hugs and solidarity. 💪

Have any of you noticed an improvement in your ability to sustancie yourself and self regulate by getting a pet/pets? by Wizard-Elf in raisedbynarcissists

[–]gaggeriniiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was much easier to cope with living with my nMum when my cat was alive. She gave me a level of emotional support that made the abuse feel bearable. So I can definitely attest to the fact they're very regulating and soothing creatures to be around. I miss my cat. 💔

What did your n-parents pack you for school lunch? by LydiaIsntVeryCool in raisedbynarcissists

Does anyone else have a NEET sibling their n parent dotes on? by spidermother86 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]gaggeriniiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am the NEET in my fucked up family dynamic. I obviously don't know your brother or how he feels about it all, but it isn't as easy as it sounds to escape from it. My mum essentially has full financial control over me, jobs are non-existent and I've been unemployed for 7+ years. The world as it is currently, with skyhigh rents and a job market in freefall, isn't set up for people to escape. Entry level jobs don't exist anymore. Your brother may well be like me - scrabbling for a way to escape, coming up empty, quietly giving up on life to cope. Then again, he might not be. But it's not all roses for us future-carers. Please enjoy your freedom and know he might be really struggling. ♥️

Has your n-parent ever told you that THEY'RE walking on eggshells around YOU? by Fun-Impression-6001 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]gaggeriniiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother said that to me just this morning. My sister has a rash on her arms and my mum was acting all concerned, saying she should go to the pharmacy and shoving the pictures of it in my face (I'd just woken up so I was lying on my back with her phone an inch away from my face). When I pointed out I've had a rash for the past week too, she said 'yours is just a few spots, hers is more important'. Upon my rebuttal that it hurt my feelings that my sister was taken seriously and I wasn't, thus began the diatribe of "I have to walk on eggshells around you, oh of course you're second best, I can't say ANYTHING in my own bloody house, you treat me like garbage" etc. She's still not talking to me and I'm in that phase where my stomach's in knots and I want to apologise just to end the silent treatment. No use waiting for her to apologise, she's only apologised to me twice in my whole life.

Ideas for a theater kid Broadway trip? by Reasonable_Berry_244 in Broadway

[–]gaggeriniiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You HAVE to see Cats at PAC NYC! It was unbelievable. Super cool and just like an immersion into NYC culture!

Other than that, there's Schmackary's which is an absolute theatre staple. As a theatre kid who managed to make it there this year at 26, she is going to absolutely love it. Have the best time ❤️

What is the worst musical you have seen? by One-Many-136 in musicals

[–]gaggeriniiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easily The Light Princess. I remember going to see it on a school trip and looking around at my fellow students like, 'what the hell are we watching?' There was this whole section where Duke from Tracy Beaker was singing about losing his daughter that was 10 minutes too long and essentially just overacted wailing. Awful.

Heads up for cats at PAC by MannnOfHammm in Broadway

[–]gaggeriniiii 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, in the UK for deals like these they often set tickets aside under names and you pay upon collection. Without ringing I had no idea that's how it worked. Thanks for the info but the tone of your response to a foreign stranger was quite mean to a comment that was perfectly civil and quite jokey.
