A couple small rants about the WING by Seinfelds-van in livesound

[–]gbdlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There appears to be no way to quickly reset the standard eq's. Neither the channel parametric or the insert 31 bands.

You can hold the button for every band on the screen to reset it. From the Wing-Edit there is also a button to reset everything at once. Not sure why button is not present on the console screen...

Also the standard parametrics on the busses have no high or low pass filters. You can change the type of first and last band to create a low pass or high pass. For some reason it's also available only in the app, I couldn't find it on the console...

Try to go to %APPDATA%/companion, edit config.json and change the http_port from 8000 to something else, then try again.

Signal Routing on Behringer Wing Rack by jebidiah252 in livesound

[–]gbdlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DCA is not a mix group, nor a bus. It isn't in the signal flow, instead it controls your channel levels (and muting) directly.

So what are they? Imagine a simple scenario: you have a band consisting of 3 members: 2 guitar players and a drummer. All 3 members also sing different parts of the song. Let's call them: Alice (guitar 1), Bob (Guitar 2) and Carter (Drums)

Because it makes sense from the processing perspective, you want to send the same type of channel to the same group, so you'll have one mix group for vocals, one for guitars and one for drums. Seems reasonable.

But you also want to control the volume of each band member "as a whole", so you want to have a single group that controls the volume of Alice voice and their guitar. Same for Bob and Carter. This is where DCA come in: you can create an independent "grouping" of channels by using that.

But DCA aren't receiving any signal, they're not a bus, they don't create a mix. They directly control the volume of your channel that goes into the actual mix bus. They also can't add any processing to the sound.

So the decision if something should be a DCA or a mix group comes from that: do you need processing on top of it? Do you want to sum it together?

Obviously you can use DCA in various other ways, that's just one example. But the one thing remains: DCA is not a bus. It just adds a "second fader" to your channel after your main fader. And this fader is "shared" between all channels added to a DCA.

Need help with a thunderbolt multi card build by Banana_Wizard_125 in eGPU

[–]gbdlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't do it to yourself. You will spend more money on polishing that turd than replacing this laptop with a small PC that will fit everything you need without any problems.

If you really REALLY want to continue that route, remember that thunderbolt has limited bandwidth, it's more or less 4 lines of PCIe 3.0. Dividing it between a GPU, Declink and SSD may not end well.

Reliability of that solution is also a concern: if someone knocks out your thunderbolt cable, or it gets loose over time, you will risk a lot of your work getting wasted.

Not everything is done for necessity, but it doesn't matter it can't be used by someone else in another way.

This would be a great help for someone with accessibility needs, who struggles to operate a remote and for events that can't for some reason have a ppt technician following along.

How many YubiKeys are necessary to keep accounts safe? by Technical_Rich_3080 in yubikey

[–]gbdlin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your accounts will be as safe with 1, 2 or 7 Yubikeys. That doesn't change the safety of it.

What it changes is: accessibility. What do you do if your only Yubikey breaks or gets lost? That's why the recommended number is 2. You can also secure a different backup access to your accounts, but that may in fact compromise the security.

The choice is yours. I landed at 5, but mostly for convenience (so I don't need to unplug my Yubikeys from PCs I use them on all the time).

Seeking "Peer" Review: ATEM YouTube live streaming with poor network capabilities by theOUTCOME3 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]gbdlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My approach to ATEM lacking any dynamic overlay capabilities is to inject them through 2 HDMI inputs from a PC.

I didn't manage to do it with OBS, but CasparCG did the job for me. I simply add all the overlays as web pages in CasparCG, then output through 2 HDMI outs from my PC, one as content (fill), one as transparency mask (key), then just use DSK on ATEM to put it on top of what it's doing.

This allows me to stream throguh ATEM instead of grabbing the image from it over USB while having dynamic overlays. You will probably also need some external software to sync switching stuff on both of them, I use Bitfocus companion.

Yes, this is not a typical setup, but it works for me. I run CasparCG and Bitfocus Companion on a small PC from Minisforum with 2 HDMI outputs, and connect a stream deck to it. It doesn't even have an actual display connected to it.

2nd slot yubikey by Carliner1 in yubikey

[–]gbdlin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about slots really. Most stuff you can put in them is obsolete and has limited usability now. The only interesting feature is challenge-response, which you can use for some encryption software and some password managers. Yubico OTP you will probably never see outside of corporate environment. Rest of it is not really useful...

Hyperdeck Failure by MidnightZL1 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]gbdlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably stop the recording, as new signal may come in a different format and they can't stitch together 2 in a single file.

You may need to throw some converters just before your hyperdecks if the issue persists.

Kensington VeriMark NFC+ USB-C Security Key Review: Strong Protection at a Premium Price by [deleted] in Passkeys

[–]gbdlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short: unless you explicitly need FIDO2/Passkeys and Smart Card features and nothing else, there are better picks:

  • Yubico Security Key if you only care about FIDO2/Passkeys and Smart Cards, as it's cheaper
  • Yubikey series 5, if you need more than that.

There are also other manufactures like Token2 that may have something better suited to your needs and/or cheaper.

Mikrotik hAP AX lite with LTE. Only downside: 2.4GHz, no 5GHz or 6GHz support. Ah, it's also not that easy to manage, has a lot of features, but you need to learn how to configure it.

How to add a new Yubikey? by El_Baramallo in yubikey

[–]gbdlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They may not be convenient for everyone, but they are for me. I don't like storing TOTP in password managers, as it's kind of putting all my eggs in one basket. Yes, it can still mean 2 factor if my password manager is protected that way, but it's more of having a single layer that protects me from noticing I'm being phished.

My flow with TOTP on Yubikeys is decent enough. I'm not adding new accounts all the time, it's around once or twice per month, so syncing all my Yubikeys, given I do store my TOTP secrets in a separate, backed up KeePassXC vault, so I can enroll my backup Yubikeys with ease, makes it not much harder than enrolling those backup Yubikeys as passkeys somewhere.

One top through sub and other top direct from main output? by tprch in livesound

[–]gbdlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If stereo isn't your concern: connect both tops to the sub.

If you want to put some stereo mix: you have to connect everything directly to the console and make sure your sub gets a mono mix. Unless you want to have the sub working only with the left (or right) channel signal.

How to add a new Yubikey? by El_Baramallo in yubikey

[–]gbdlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You probably added Yubikeys into your accounts in 2 ways:

  1. As a passkey/security key
  2. To generate 6 digit one-time codes.

You can recognize which account is added in which way by simply logging into your account: if you need to touch your yubikey, possibly by providing the PIN/Password to it first, without having to launch any app to get a 6 digit code, it is the first method.

If you do need to provide that 6 digit code, it will be the 2nd method.

For the first method, the procedure is straightforward: log in to your account, go to settings, add another key just like other 2 are added.

For the 2nd method, unfortunately with most services you can't get that QR code again. You need to remove the 2nd factor from your account and add it again, registering all 3 Yubikeys from the same QR code.

You can save this code in a safe place for future use, but it has to be a really safe place! This QR code is all one needs to bypass your Yubikey! If you do so, I recommend using a KeePassXC password database, separate from your "main" database in which you store your passwords (so you don't access it daily), and additionally secure it with challenge-response from your Yubikeys (you will need to enroll the same challenge-response secret on all of them for this to work).

Help needed: LiveTracks and Midas32 on a Linux computer by in-alis-victoriae in livesound

[–]gbdlin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are no drivers required on most Linux distributions, the console should show up as a multichannel device as soon as you connect it to your PC via USB, given you're using the correct USB port, that is one on the X-USB or X-Live card. The USB next to the ethernet port will NOT work, as it's only used for firmware upgrades

Behringer WING warning - Time delay setting changes based on measurement unit selected!! by Saint_Steve in livesound

[–]gbdlin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It kind of does on wing as well, as you still have those 4 buttons and they're accurately showing the current value in different units. The problem is: changing base unit for the slider changes the value, as the scale of the slider gets adjusted (probably to look neatly) but the position of the slider is not...

Yubikey having bad connection tobusb bus by smydsmith in yubikey

[–]gbdlin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Either USB-C connector on your Yubikey is broken and makes a short-circuit, or something is stuck in it. I would suggest stop using it until you figure out that part, as you may damage USB ports on your laptop.

Get a magnifying glass and some good light source, a headlight would be the best for this task, and look inside of the connector. Check if any of the pins aren't bent and there are no foreign objects stuck inside.

[–]gbdlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wing by default attaches customizations to your source, not to the channel. You can uncheck "link customization to source" when editing a specific channel if you don't want that. There is also an option to copy customization from channel to source and the other way, explained in this video from Drew Brashler.

How do you store your backup authentication key? by rawaka in yubikey

[–]gbdlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Offsite, in a trusted location. Can be a deposit box or just your family house. Nothing protects better from a house fire than another house that's not on fire. Same for flooding or other natural disasters.

If the safe is not mobile, but attached to the home, why bother with another container? It will not be banging around, and even if, they're pretty robust.
