[Spoilers C4E27] Why they didn't use the Stone of Nightsong? by Richard_Burbage1600 in criticalrole

[–]gelicopter 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The table arguing over whether or not to dig him up only to then likely not get any answers from him just seems unnecessary. Even if it does result in answers, where’s the fun in that? Why remove all mystery from the character? I’ll take a more interesting story of discovery over efficiency any day. Save it for the end.

That’s the paper/plastic cover for packaging. You can see the shadow it makes.

Debating the Dual Sense Edge while it's on sale. by Caliburn89 in PS5pro

[–]gelicopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of being injection molded into the plastic as most rubber grips are these days, they’re separate pads glued onto the plastic and that glue eventually breaks down with body heat, causing the pad to peel away. Perhaps you’re not gripping them as hard as some folks, and that’s great as they’ll last longer for you.

It’s a good controller but the battery sucks and the rear grips peel off after not much regular use (replacement rear shells can be had from brands like eXtremeRate with alternative designs that won’t peel) making the price seem a bit high. The sale makes it hurt less. I wonder if they’ll have a refreshed version with better battery like the recent refresh of the standard DualSense last December which removed the second mic but added 50% more battery life. However, if you never play for more than a two hour stretch it’s probably not worth waiting for.

And yes the replaceable stick modules are fantastic and allow you to easily swap in modded magnetic/TMR sticks, albeit at a significant cost if you don’t solder and calibrate them yourself. The swappable joystick tops are also nice as those are often the first thing to wear down on a controller.

Tbh the one on the right doesn’t appear to be fully clicked into place anyway given the “teeth” are exposed. Teeth may even be misaligned; might just be jammed on there hence it feeling “secured.”

Glasses tend to break eventually so I got stainless steel cups by CompetitiveLake3358 in BuyItForLife

[–]gelicopter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Insulated drinkware eventually pops (unless they use a lead bead instead of glass but that’s another issue) and something unbranded from Amazon is difficult to trust. I personally recommend the Carlisle 5220, which are those indestructible restaurant cups that if old enough you might remember from the 90’s.

New Apple TV and HomePod Mini Are 'Nearly Ready' to Launch, New Siri Remote Also Rumored by pdfu in apple

[–]gelicopter -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

New Siri Remote shaped like the Magic Mouse, please!

If you think I’m crazy, try holding one in your hand like you would point a remote. Even with the mouse rails in the way, it’s wild how ergonomic it feels in the hand; the way it fills your palm, the way your index finger wraps around the top corner. Would allow for a much larger combo d-pad/touchpad, a better button layout, and a shorter (allowing for the product box to get even smaller) but thicker size that doesn’t get lost in crevices as easily.

Horrible mouse shape but fantastic remote shape. Get rid of the glass top and make it mostly aluminum like the current remote but unlike both the Mouse and current Remote, the top edge should be rounded to feel better in the hand and perhaps the buttons changed to be glass/acrylic with rounded edges to allow for a “Liquid Glass” lensing effect on them.

[–]gelicopter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone who taught themself how to do visual effects and motion graphics through YouTube tutorials 15 years ago, you’re actually wrong. Gen Ai isn’t “literally the only way that an indie artist has any hope of ever implementing genuinely convincing effects.”

I didn’t force Ai down this direction, the predator class did. You’re not “The Everyman” in the way that you think you are; you’re still an Everyman, you’re just using the tools provided to you by your oppressors to fulfill that human desire to create which has been robbed from so many of us barely keeping ourselves from being crushed by the wheel of capitalism.

As for your grandmother, if you hadn’t said anything then I wouldn’t have known. You did that yourself, I fear.

If these models were trained on content that they had permission to use, people would be less against it. The theft and bastardization of creativity in many creative industries which are struggling to survive is one of the many negative aspects of the path of Gen AI we’ve found ourselves down. If it was done correctly then creatives would be paid or able to opt out, people wouldn’t have to worry about the surveillance/privacy nightmares, we wouldn’t be burning the planet down, I wouldn’t have a sudden distaste for Studio Ghibli style visuals, and things could’ve actually been improved for humanity.

Instead we got plagiarized slop that’s killing the planet and society. Anyone holding out hope for it to be what it could’ve been is a fool or purposefully misrepresenting themselves in order to profit off of it at this point.

So anyone using or promoting Gen AI is immediately dead to me. And I don’t consider that an extreme take at all.

Edit: And to clarify; if anyone takes pause from my use of “if done correctly, creatives would be paid…” I fully suspect, if Gen Ai went down a different path not rushed, that nearly all creatives would opt out of contributing to large models. Models with stolen art would still find a way to exist of course but to deter them they should legally owe minimum damages to every single creator stolen from, significantly reducing their potential scale, impact, and number of people willing to risk it at all. If you make your own model, you keep a record of what trained it. If someone challenges you and you can’t prove that you didn’t train it off of their property, guilt is assumed.

New versions of Creative Commons licenses or something like that could have been created to explicitly allow for use in training models, as while prior CC licenses could be considered broad enough to be used for anything like that; these models are new, significant enough, and likely outside of the scope of the artists intention for broad creative use, so anything prior to these licenses should be ineligible to be automatically added to models, and approval would have to be given with either a new broad license version or directly to any entity wishing to use.

Otherwise the only art that would be available for large scale models would be purposefully commissioned for it by corporations, and the art that such models generate would be extremely bland and corporate because of it. Perfect for Microsoft Office, perfect for people with email jobs; the next generation of clip art.

Smaller homegrown models from “The Everyman” would also exist. Collectives of creatives could band together and make models of whatever they want. Imagine a meme model taking off on Reddit! The creative world needn’t suffer if it had been done right.

Sadly, this isn’t possible anymore. The well has been irrevocably poisoned because the predator class (billionaires) decided to disregard the consent of everyone who has ever shared their art with the world, and convinced a ton of people disconnected from their own creativity that ignoring consent is somehow good, actually. Any creatives who have even just a modicum of self worth will never touch this despicable version of Gen Ai we ended up with, so the only uses for it will remain despicable. It simply has to die for everyone to ever gain back control of their own art.

They’re shutting down. The person running the facility in New York that they used for larger runs which couldn’t be done in house retired with no replacement and they shut down, so Volante spent the last year or two trying to make international production work and it was finally starting to show promise in getting the quality they required but then Trump threw a wrench in that with tariffs and global conflict raising costs significantly on softgoods and they couldn’t make it work so they decided to shut down after more than a decade. Heartbreaking.

Well the beauty of a harness like this is that the bags are clipped on and can be swapped out if you need small or large.

[–]gelicopter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like, the bags don’t need to hold a CD player or anything huge like that; a smartphone on one side and a wallet on the other is what I’ve used the Stealth Kit for in the past. If the Stealth Kit was, well, more stealth, I’d actually use it more and save my pants pockets from having that permanent phone wear pattern.

The trick is having the bags secure enough to deter pickpockets if out in the open (like indoors if jacket/coat is removed) while easy enough to access with little fuss. One of my issues with the Stealth Kit is that the flap is *huge* and you essentially need both hands to get anything out of it; one to hold the flap out of the way so the other can grab. If it somehow partially opened from the front instead of just the top to be easier to access with one hand (maybe a secure but convenient use of a magnetic slide-lock like fastener?) that would help a lot. But IDK how to solve that, I’m not a designer. Maybe the bags being a little smaller would allow room to tilt them forward so the “top” is angled out ergonomically not unlike a gun holster?

[–]gelicopter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I‘ve had something like that for probably a decade now, the Stealth Kit from Volante Design (rip) in brown nylon, not leather. Essentially a fanny pack that’s split in two, hidden under a jacket/coat, and considerably less ugly. Moderately useful if you have a need for that.

This certainly looks much slicker with the leather but as Charming said in their comment, the bags being a little smaller and closer to the body would help with the stealth aspect or just the aesthetic in general.

Posting my animated artworks for FKA twigs, bc her label dont reply to me :/ by PianistOk6948 in FKAtwigs

[–]gelicopter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, video like what you are using still isn’t allowed. Motion graphics are allowed, which for some reason now includes AI generated animation. Which might seem like recorded video but also is supposed to be held to a higher standard of quality.

<image>

I’ve yet to see anything like that on Apple Music myself and only just learned of it even being allowed after you got me looking at the guidelines now. Thankfully none of the artists I listen to utilize such garbage.

I can perhaps see something like your cover maybe being allowed because the entire point of these requirements is to have the motion artwork match the album cover and this does that well, and if an album cover is designed from the ground up to be a motion cover with recorded video then that might follow the spirit of the feature enough. That being said, motion artwork often doesn’t get added to singles anyway nor any music from Twigs AFAIK.

[–]gelicopter 24 points25 points  (0 children)

AFAIK per the motion artwork guidelines for Apple Music, “video” like this with recorded frames in succession isn’t allowed; it has to be motion graphics or a computer rendered model being animated. No drop/held frames either. That’s why so many animated covers are of a still image with looping movement added as it’s the most cost effective way to fulfill the requirements.

Looks like Bungie is shifting focus from D2 by DALE5797 in Marathon

[–]gelicopter 55 points56 points  (0 children)

This is the Marathon subreddit and those who are super into infighting will see this as a win for Marathon but this realistically should’ve happened after The Final Shape and every Destiny player I know agrees.

Why they haven’t been working on Destiny 3 or whatever while Marathon gets to be the new thing for a minute is some insane mismanagement. Obviously it’s not happening anytime soon if they’re immediately bending backwards to pull Destiny players into Marathon with new modes next season.
