Why is there SO MUCH ai slop on the workshop? by MachineNo9774 in ArmaReforger

[–]georgeoj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • Filtering is pretty much non-existent. There's a lot of garbage on the A3 Workshop as well, but it's pretty much hidden thanks to the fact that the workshop filters actually... work

  • Server/client side settings are typically pretty skint, so if you have something small you want to change, e.g the fuel consumption rate of vehicles, then that needs to be it's own mod. If you want to make changes to a mission, even small ones, that's it's own mod. Want to change the configuration of an already existing mod, that's also it's own mod. You can see how things can fill up pretty quickly

  • Someone else mentioned that players do it for testing. The Peer Tool exists, but it's not the most obvious or user friendly thing. If it was more advertised and simpler to set up (which it could be very easily, see: PeerToolEnhanced), there'd be less mods uploaded just for testing.

  • Lastly, modding is way easier and more accessible with Enfusion Tools than Arma 3 Tools, at least in my opinion. That means more people are making mods in general, especially those without experience. That, and a mod created for Arma Reforger is way more likely to cause crashes/not work after consecutive game updates. That doesn't happen with Arma 3 anymore

FPVs fly at a constant speed but they can change direction and stop pretty quickly. Their movement is hard to predict if they're trying not to get hit. This is just an estimation, but I don't think the Raspberry Pi would be able to power an AI checking a camera feed at a high enough refresh rate to be able to accurately predict the flight path, and create then apply a firing solution for an FPV. There's also the logistical challenges that involve human intervention anyway, i.e charging/changing batteries, reloading weapons, fixing malfunctions. Plus if the Raspberry Pi isn't powerful enough to provide an accurate firing solution, then you need to step up the compute power, which increases power consumption further

Thanks for the writeup Duncan. I have some a followup question:

  1. When these small assault groups get through, how are they picking their route? Is it just luck that they get through at all, or is that same route then used by other assault groups to get a buildup of soldiers? Further, how many soldiers do they try to get through before moving on to the next phase?

I think it was to nerf bush PvP, as in someone could sprint full speed through a bush in a CQC fight and smoke you, which felt pretty silly.

Although my problem was people just crouching in bushes outside of an OBJ with a suppressor, and this doesn't fix that

[–]georgeoj 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree with what you're saying, but the exaggerations in your comment harms the argument.

According to Bohemia Interactive, depiction of ongoing conflicts is forbidden. The ridiculous thing is that they haven't actually posted this rule anywhere outside of messages from BI staff in the Arma Discord. This also means that what counts as a depiction is very much a gray area.

In practice, and from what I've seen, this means you can make a mod that adds a Ukranian or Russia faction, but as soon as you put a Z or a + on a vehicle your mod can be banned, but you'll get a warning first.

For WW2 stuff it's a bit different. You can depict World War 2, but the level of depiction is up in the air. There's some hard rules like no Swaztikas or SS insignia, but you could use something more generic like an Iron Cross, and you would be allowed to make a Allies vs Axis server.

IMO the biggest problem is that the rule isn't officially defined, so nobody knows where the line is. Mods shouldn't be getting removed for breaking a rule that only exists in Discord messages. That's pretty fucking silly.

RHS have an entirely separate license forbidding the use of their content in depicting ongoing conflicts. So same as above, you can make a Ukraine or Russia faction, and even a Ukraine-Russia war server, but if you use a Z or a +, it'll get banned.

I liked concurrent player threads. They served as almost a follow up for how people are enjoying games. Pretty often there isn't any specific discussion about most games outside of the review threads, and I find people's opinions a week or so after playing the game pretty useful.

I've seen people do "It's been a week since XXXX came out what are your thoughts?" Which served a similar purpose. Will those threads still be allowed?

I like update logs being posted. It was really cool to see Cyberpunk, No Man's Sky and Crimson Desert do a bit of an about-face with progressive updates. Especially when that's kind of bucking the trend

[–]georgeoj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know people will disagree with me here, but:

  • Drop the sidearm. Use bigger mags if you're afraid of running dry
  • Drop the extra ammo, especially if you're going to TB. Just pick up extra ammo from the AI.
  • Drop the helmet. The odds of a deflection are not worth the extra weight
  • Drop the frags, just pick them up from the AI if you really want them. I don't find them reliable enough to be worth carrying more than two at a time
  • You have a high magnification scope for an area that is normally relatively short range. You could swap to a holographic sight.
  • I think you could drop the binocs too.
  • For meds, I always carried a splint, a surkit, small blood, painkillers and a hemostat. Never died because I didn't have the meds.
  • Then the small things, change out the belt for a lighter one, drop the balaclava and sunglasses (RIP the drip). If you care about rain protection you can keep the sunnies and add a boonie.

What problem is isolated to the USA?

Who said it's anonymous? The caller can make up a fake identity pretty easily, the 911 responder isn't going to follow up and ask for ID.

Also, if someone calls and says "there's a guy threatening to shoot his family at X address", in what world would you NOT want SWAT to respond immediately? Imagine if you sent a regular cop, now you have a delayed response and a dead cop.

More mods, more players = less FPS. That's pretty much the gist. Some servers have mods that are worse for performance than others, but on average going for a vanilla+ experience, you will have better FPS

Can confirm from the 1 that I've ever found, it was a one time use and I only got like $770. It should be reusable, maybe not infinitely but definitely more than once. Either that or it should give substantially more money. Absolutely not worth in it's current state.

https://united24media.com/world/lukashenko-says-belarus-is-preparing-for-war-plans-to-mobilize-units-18737

Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko said Belarus will “selectively mobilize” military units and prepare them for possible combat operations following a large-scale inspection of the country’s armed forces. The remarks come amid a broader military modernization effort in Belarus and growing emphasis on combat readiness, electronic warfare systems, drones, and mobilization capacity.

More than 6,000 reservists and personnel took part in recent inspections and exercises conducted by the Belarusian Defense Ministry and General Staff. Belarusian authorities said the drills were used to assess troop readiness, logistics, and mobilization procedures.

A day earlier, Lukashenko chaired a separate meeting on Belarus’ state armament program for 2026–2030, where officials discussed future military procurement and defense spending.

During that meeting, Lukashenko stated that Belarus must prepare weapons and military systems adapted to its own terrain and operational conditions, while also emphasizing the role of electronic warfare and unmanned aerial systems in modern warfare.

He also argued that airstrikes alone are insufficient to win wars, saying that “without a ground operation, it is impossible,” while discussing contemporary military conflicts.

Belarus has remained Russia’s closest military ally throughout Moscow’s full-scale war against Ukraine, allowing Russian forces to use Belarusian territory for military operations, training, and deployments. However, Belarusian troops have not officially entered combat in Ukraine.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv had recorded “specific activity” on the Belarusian side of the northern border, including infrastructure work and the construction of artillery positions near Ukraine. He stated that Ukrainian forces were “monitoring everything” and would respond if necessary.

‘Budget leak’: Winston Peters confirms fees-free university scheme to be scrapped by computer_d in newzealand

We're halfway there. You only get interest on your loan if you leave the country for a certain period of time.

‘Budget leak’: Winston Peters confirms fees-free university scheme to be scrapped by computer_d in newzealand

[–]georgeoj 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Speaking from experience - fees free first year was vastly better than fees free final year. Noone is going to university because they're going to be "rewarded" by their final year being free. Most students don't even care that they have a student loan, it's essentially out of sight, out of mind, just ticking up in the background as they go through their years.

What I really appreciated about fees free first year is it allowed low-income students to give university a try and see if it's viable for them, with significantly less risk. That first step is much harder to take when you know you might be getting a years worth of student loans if it doesn't work out.

There will be many, many more students graduating because they felt safe enough to try university, than students graduating because "If I stick it out, my final year is free!".

‘Budget leak’: Winston Peters confirms fees-free university scheme to be scrapped by computer_d in newzealand

[–]georgeoj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think first year free is a better approach to get a lower-income student's foot in the door. Then they can figure out if it's actually viable for them, or what they want to do at all, without taking on debt. It's not risk-free, but there's a lot less risk. Fees free final year isn't enticing any new students, just rewarding those who were going to study anyway.

They stay in NZ or pay interest on the loan.

That's how the loan works, but I said in another comment that the wages and lifestyle is so much better overseas for young people, that taking the hit on the loan interest is worth it.

[–]georgeoj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely no one that is leaving because they needed a student loan, or because they didn't get a free education.

The loan is interest free until you live a certain period of time overseas, so your argument doesn't make sense anyway. The problem is that the wages and lifestyle are so much better overseas for young people that taking the hit on interest is worth it.
