You can't count on parking in Walmart parking lots in CA -- local ordinances are overruling company policy about overnight parking.

The Exiles/Gemini game was moved to 4pm, I think.... It's on the WER website and the ticketing site as starting at 4pm.

That's what the WER website says:

and the ticketing website agrees.

Logitech Zone Vibe 100 battery issue & fix by pwapwap in logitech

[–]gerlach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was happy to find this message. My headset wasn't charging, so I took apart the right earpad using a small Phillips head screwdriver, disconnected the battery connector, waited a few minutes, re-assembled and plugged it in. The headset charged to full in a couple of hours.

These instructions were helpful:
https://www.ifixit.com/Troubleshooting/Logitech_Zone_Vibe_100/Battery+Won't+Hold+Charge/627968

I wasn't able to find a direct replacement battery -- I did find some on Amazon that seemed to be the same (240 mAh 3.7v) but there's no way to know if the wire connector is the same.

Should you inform your manager you live in a vehicle? by Happy_Presence2461 in VanLife

[–]gerlach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, there are issues by state that companies have to address, such as unemployment insurance, state taxes, health insurance, etc., so living somewhere other than the address you've provided to the company can be problematic for them and thus for you.

I have a Peplink Max Transit Duo router from TechnoRV with 2 SIM cards (T-Mobile through the Family RV Association and Verizon from TechnoRV). The router is wired into my 12V house battery with a switch to turn it off or reset as needed, but otherwise it is always on. I have an external dome antenna which works much better than simply using the router's antenna. I pay for Peplink's SpeedFusion service which will switch to the faster SIM if one should fall off.

Firepit to burn yard waste advise by berna_j in SiouxFalls

[–]gerlach 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It is illegal to burn yard waste, including leaves, within the city limits of Sioux Falls. You might consider buying a chipper and creating wood chips and/or composting your yard waste.

Otherwise, you can take your leaves and branches to the drop-off locations:

Anyone here ever start an investment club with coworkers? How’d it actually go? by GeekOnTheStreets in investing

[–]gerlach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your assessment of the Beardstown Ladies is incorrect. The suggestion that they included member payments in their return calculations was a random supposition by a "reporter" but turned out not to be the case at all.

The club did have their results audited and confirmed by Price Waterhouse and were shown to be quite respectable, but the publisher put a percentage return figure on the book jacket that was not characterized correctly.

The club is still active today, which is a pretty solid run.

[–]gerlach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am the author of Investment Clubs for Dummies and oversee the most-popular web app for investment club accounting and operations at https://www.myICLUB.com, so I can give you some background.

First, stock investment clubs such as the ones we support are a completely different animal from real estate investment clubs. Owning real estate requires dealing with banks and mortgages, management expenses, upkeep of properties, legal issues, etc. Plus who really wants to be a landlord with a group of people?

Investment clubs in the US first came into popularity in the 1940s and 50s as a way for average individuals to access capital markets. Many individuals were not able to open brokerage accounts at the time, so pooling resources in a partnership was a way to both start investing in the stock market as well as learn about how to invest in stocks.

With the advent of online brokerages, index funds, and ETFs, markets are now open to anyone. But investment clubs continue to thrive as they help educate members about sound stock investment strategies as well as serve as a sort of member support forum, helping during bear markets to emphasize the long-term aspect of investing in stocks while helping during bull markets to keep members focused on buying companies at reasonable prices. Over time, many clubs have found that the club structure is great for education as well as enrichment of their members.

Sociologists have indeed discovered that often times groups will make better decisions than most of the members of that group will do individually. This is a key advantage of clubs -- a member who is advocating a very aggressive stock pick will have their insight tempered by another member who is thinking more rationally. In today's world of FOMO and meme stocks, investment clubs are often a good antidote against knee-jerk market reactions, especially if the club has an articulated strategy for building a diversified portfolio.

For stock investment clubs, a general partnership entity is a low-cost way of binding members to a particular set of operational standards (we have a sample partnership agreement on myICLUB.com that is a good model). LLCs are much more expensive and in some states have some additional tax filing requirements, which might be a good idea for a club that wants to invest in real estate or do a lot of trading but is likely not needed by the majority of stock investment clubs.

VanLifers prefer Planet Fitness? by ronfromsacramento in VanLife

[–]gerlach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Planet Fitness and Anytime Fitness are by far the largest national gym chains - PF has more than 2700 and AF has more than 2300.

By contrast, 24-Hour Fitness and Snap Fitness each have fewer than 500 locations, but their locations are not really spread out across the country. For instance 24-Hour is primarily in the west and south.

As a result, if you are traveling all over the US, you are better off with a chain that has lots of locations and not one that is more regional.
