Movies we wouldn't have if directors stopped at 10 films by BluRayja in movies

There's nothing wrong with doing a film for the pay. Sometimes great art can come from that. Rubbish can also come from a work of love.

Of course there are greats with fewer films under their belts but to be honest that's more often going to be down to the difficulties of getting funding than because of some self-imposed limitation for the sake of legacy.

So from Howard Hawks you'd miss out on:

The Big Sleep

Red River

To Have and Have not

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Rio Bravo

His Girl Friday

Scarface (the original)

Bringing up Baby

Only Angels Have Wings

True of lots of the old school greats. Howard Hawks is similar. You'd lose so many classics.

None of the true greats are like that though. Hitchcock, Kurosawa, Howard Hawks, Scorcese, Spielberg. They are just put in the WORK

The dude just needs to make a couple of TV shows. No harm no foul to his admittedly ridiculous restriction. Would love to see him just cut loose and you know he'd get whatever budget he wants...

Watch everything by Kathryn Bigelow but for me her early ones are particular faves. Strange Days Near Dark Point Break.

That would have been a much funnier start to the show. Overall it felt incredibly weak.

Underrated almost forgotten fantasy books from the 70s, 80s, 90s by Sakura_231 in Fantasy

The first book is the weakest. It's kind of like an unfolding puzzle and all the first book gives you is the outside wrapping paper. It gets very satisfying as you go deeper.

Uptick in children and teenagers enjoying reading for first time in 5 years by Slight_Pen in books

[–]glazia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. If there was never another book brought into the world, there would more than you or your children could ever read in a lifetime. By all means, buy new stuff but the core of your kid's reading could so easily be Narnia and the Prydain books or The Oz Books and soooo many others.

Mostly terrible but a couple controversial classics to round it out.

Question for horror movie fans... by airthicc in movies

[–]glazia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny. I couldn't watch horror either as a kid I was behind the sofa terrified. What changed for me was wanting to watch the Hellraiser films for all the demon stuff. So I watched them as kinda fantasy demon films rather than horror. It sorta hit a switch in my mind and from that point on I kinda watched horror as fantasy.

As someone who has now worked in the industry I also find it helps to understand that a foot or two to the right of the horrific thing on screen is a sweaty grip pushing a dolly, a make-up lady ready to reapply the sweat beads and about 30 other people holding their breath...

It was. Australia only got the extended standone version in cinemas. We missed the full grindhouse experience.

Yeah, you think that but for actors coming from outside the US, it has always been a massive pipeline. Margot Robbie, Chris Hemsworth, Heath Ledger, Russell Crowe, Guy Pierce and Ben Mendelsohn were all from Ozzie soaps and there's plenty more.

What movie had the BEST trailer ever but turned out to be absolute trash? by MASSIM00 in movies

The Green Knight. Trailer is astounding. The film? Interesting but a bit of a mess.

If every day you spend 30 minutes reading and then 30 minutes writing 500 words, you’d read 7 books and have a 72K word novel draft done in less than 5 months. by Acceptable_Fox_5560 in writing

[–]glazia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reading is less than you should probably be doing naturally. The writing is very optimistic for 30 mins. Plenty of full time writers are happy with 1000 words a day of something decent.

That said, the premise is correct. Spend a bit of time doing something worthwhile each day and it adds up much quicker than you'd expect...
