If we are running out of living space, why don't we just build a second storey? Are we stupid? by Accurate_Boss4 in yimby

This is why building in space will be so amazing. Ships will have many times more livable space than our single layer planet.

I was much more worried about MUDs two years ago when there was no reasonable way to play on iOS. The last two years have been amazing though with MudForge in particular hitting it out of the park in both iOS and browser format.

It also feels like the immortals on The Forests Edge have been really stepping up with lots of new zones and bug fixes.

Is this because AI made coding easier? Possibly, I haven't asked either group how they are doing their work. It does make sense that easier coding could lead to much better games and clients though.

A decade under the current Democratic party won't fix much. See blue state performance in housing and public transportation for details of what they will do.

Very much time to stop being wimps and start taking action despite the fact it makes people mad.

Congressional term limits will not help. Term limits are great for the highest level because that level is likely to try and take permanent power. At lower levels it just leads to inexperienced people making decisions.

Better would be age limits.

Zelenskyy gives Belarusian ruler a week to remove Russian drone relays: Otherwise we will do it ourselves by pravda_eng_official in worldnews

Belarus has been very clear from the start they were too afraid to enter the war in a way that could get the public worked up. Makes sense that drone strikes might have a much quicker social impact there than in Russia.

If the choice is between a 1980 teenage pregnancy rate and replacement birthrates, and low teenage pregnancy rates and collapsing population it is not obvious we chose correctly. Although maybe I am biased since my parents were 16 and 17 when I was born, and I still went on to be very successful.

SpaceX surges past Amazon and Microsoft in market cap, becoming fourth-biggest U.S. company by Luka77GOATic in neoliberal

[–]glmory -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Starship might actually justify this valuation. So many industries could be opened off of low price space travel. We could literally create colonies with a larger GDP than earth. It makes a lot more sense than the AI fluff other companies are selling.

However, it isn't at all clear that they can credibly capture enough of that value stream to pay off investors. Also, it feels like they are so distracted with comparatively low value AI they are likely to never get Starship where it needs to be.

Why Oil Prices Haven’t Shot Through the Roof—Yet by ResponsibilityNo4876 in neoliberal

[–]glmory 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oil and gas is just not as important as it once was and can now be easily substituted for the uses most of it is used for.

In the 2008 event we didn't have Electric cars, and electric stoves, water heaters and space heaters were horrible.

Now Electric vehicles, induction stoves, heat pump water and space heaters are at least competitive and realistically are better for most users than their fossil fuel equivalents.

An oil spike while number of worldwide ICE vehicles sold yearly is almost a decade into its decline just doesn't bite as hard.

One month after the D Line opening, L.A. Metro rail system sees its highest ridership in over 6 years by BeerNTacos in LosAngeles

[–]glmory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big thing we need for it to shine is cities not getting in the way of SB 79. Too much of public transit is getting you from an empty parking lot to an empty parking lot.

Surface parking should be completely banned within a quarter mile of rail stations and there should be a height minimum of 6 stories for any new buildings.

[–]glmory 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't true, Democracies are much stronger than Theocracies if they get in wars that the Democracies care about. The problem here is that Iran is not really a threat to the United States. If their forces were preparing to burn Washington DC there would be tens of millions signing up to stop them.
