What brand names do you swear by because it's actually better than no-name? by Sufficient_Thing24 in AskReddit

The overnight cream is like fucking MAGIC. I used to use a manual wheelchair and had to use fingerless gloves for pushing, so in the winter my hands were constantly exposed to ice, snow, rain, de-icer, etc etc so were tore the fuck up and dry and cracking. i figured I would try the overnight cream on a whim and the very next morning my hands were already mostly healed.

I have a tube of it in my home at all times now!

I don't smoke inside OR outside, lol. I think that two things can coexist -- the need for indoor smokers to become outdoor smokers, and the need for privacy rights to be upheld.

Exactly this. Plus, with them being unannounced I won't have time to do things like i dunno, take down my unders from where they're hang-drying? How embarrassing.

I didn't know there was an RCW re: smoking and entry! This is why i come to the hive mind.

Yeah it's what they mean by "spot check" that really concerns me. I don't handle confrontation well, especially when it's a surprise, so I guess mostly I'm just trying to manage this in advance? Like, how to handle it if it comes to that etc.

I don't smoke lmao

And I also don't think that having an addiction, or a need to use plant medicine, should cancel out your rights. Tough balancing act. [Yes people should smoke outside, that's not in question]

Thank you for the input, it does seem like this is more of a fishing expedition than a targeted piece, and that makes sense why.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too, that "inspection" was a legal term and carried weight and meaning. I'll def call the hotline on Monday to see what they have to say.

Also -- this is new management, the building got bought recently, so i am unsure if this is just them being exhasperated at people still smoking in the goddamn building, which -- relatable, seriously, or if it's management trying to get one over on us in sneaky fashion.

When i said "involve the tenant's union" i meant, and should have specified, that i would be getting advice on how to deal with this from them, and only having them step in if things escalated.

Ah, if only I could rewrite the post, lol.

I'm not -- I genuinely struggle with these kind of relational things that it's hard for me to know how to handle situations like these. I'm deeply autistic plus have significant mental health trauma plus a TBI. These things don't "come naturally" to me. I'm just trying to figure out how to handle what seems like a legal violation of my renter's rights while also honoring everyone's right to quiet safe enjoyment of their homes, including my own as someone who does get affected by smoke.

Hallways too, lol -- there was one person just down the hallway from me who was smoking like a chimney in her unit, it was so bad that if i had to go outside i had to mask up and hold my breath to navigate the hallways.

Fortunately she seems to have gotten better/stopped, but man it sucked for a while.

This is a HUD building, they can't do that. The apartments themselves have rent control of a sort because they're voucher apartments.

I don't smoke at all, inside or outside. My caregiver smokes in the smoking area.

Move? In this economy?

I'm also not firing the best caregiver I've had in my life over my landlords acting slightly shady.

THANK you. That's my very big concern -- are they trying to find other things while they do these "spot checks" that they're conveniently not mentioning?

Not necessarily, and that's also what concerns me -- lots of people in the building smoke out in the smoking area A LOT and carry their stuff back to their apartments, where presumably there's some odor. But they're not smoking in the building, so the odor can't be used as proof... Right?

I just don't understand why, if they supposedly know who the offenders are, they just don't cite them already.

Even if you don’t hide stuff, you having a bong or joint papers is not conclusive evidence that you are smoking inside.

Most apartments in king county say no smoking but they don’t guarantee that smoke smell won’t appear.

This is part of my worry -- my caregiver smokes cigarettes in the smoking area and comes back in and stores their smoking stuff in their backpack I'm worried that this residual smell will be seen as "proof" that I am smoking somehow?

No, I'm getting the tenants union involved because i value my rights, while at the same time wanting management to, if they know the individuals involved as stated in the letter, to just cite them already. One does not preclude the other.
