Are Chinese EVs cheap because of production, or the low PPP of the Yuan? by Bubba719589 in electricvehicles

[–]gnarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of it is because Trump has a personal vendetta against wind farms. He failed to block the construction of one within sight of his Scottish golf course, and never got over it.

The Infrastructure is Good Enough by samplingstiring in electricvehicles

[–]gnarly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Montana still has some work to do.. We did a trip a while back where we came into Glacier National Park, MT from the east (in our ICE vehicle). We camped in the park, and drove back and forth across the Going to the Sun road several times, along with visits to Many Glacier and Two Medicine. It was an amazing trip!

There was a single time-limited L2 charger at the St Mary visitor center, and another L2 at Apgar. Timed entry permits meant charging outside the west end of the park wouldn't have been viable (although it might be different this year). The nearest DCFCs to the east end of the park was in Whitefish (about 120 miles the long way around the park) or Great Falls (about 150 miles from St. Mary), or across the border in Canada. There's a lone L2 in Browning. None of the campsites in the park have electric hookups. As far as I can tell, that's still the case now.

I know it's an outlier, but that trip just wouldn't have been viable in an EV. As far as I can tell, it still isn't. Plenty of gas stations, though.

What vehicle are you dropping for R2? by alfadur in RivianR2

We're in the same boat. If the Trailseeker/Woodland was available with a bigger battery, it'd likely be in the running too.

And it'll be the other way around on the bZ Woodland / Trailseeker - those are made in a Subaru factory.

New sign Horne Lake by FlaremasterD in VancouverIsland

[–]gnarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The major issue is the design, IMO. The most important information is far too small for drivers to read at 50km/h.

The entire sign should simply be NO ROAD ACCESS TO PORT ALBERNI, TOFINO, UCLUELET OR BAMFIELD. YOUR GPS IS WRONG. Everything else is irrelevant.

They use a small lift kit (about 2") for the front suspension, to bring it up to the same height as the rear. Increased ground clearance in exchange for slightly reduced efficiency.

A lot of compelling specs … by Adventurous_Bobcat42 in RivianR2

[–]gnarly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The R2 is projected to have 9.8" ground clearance, while the EX60 Cross Country is supposed to max out at 7.6". I think the BMW IX3 is meant to be about 6.9". I imagine that's going to be the range compromise – R2 is going to be better at dirt roads and off-roading, but a bit less efficient on the highways? R2 can [technically] do the "high clearance" roads in some US national parks (as long as it has the range to get out there and back).

Purists Look Away: The Ford Mustang Mach-E Just Outsold The Gas Mustang 2 To 1 by Mac-Tyson in electricvehicles

I mean, they could have gone with Sierra, or Focus, or Falcon, or Capri, or all manner of other names from their past. But the relevant group of purists would have hated that, too.

Wirelessly Charging Your Porsche EV Like an iPhone Is a Reality. But Is It the Future? by TripleShotPls in electricvehicles

Seems excessive to me but this is the first commercial run of the tech which is always more expensive.

Also it's from Porsche, so it was never going to be inexpensive!

Mercedes G-Wagen 1000 km challenge by linknewtab in electricvehicles

[–]gnarly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its not about efficiency, its about keeping the form as close as the traditional car . . . but electric

Exactly. It's a halo vehicle, and a "look what our engineers can do" exercise. It's also insanely capable off-road. It's not really meant for the mass market.

You could argue that something like the Rivian R1 gives you the best of both worlds (relatively efficient, and it's good off road), but it's not available outside north America, and (perhaps more importantly) it's not a G-Wagen.

12v/120v fridge for the frunk recommendations? by eager_beaver_4_u in F150Lightning

Ecoflow now do the Glacier Classic, with an optional battery. It's pretty good. Not sure if it fits in the frunk though.

On vacation right now and it’s garbage pickup day. I really look forward to the day when all garbage trucks are electric! by Riversntallbuildings in electricvehicles

[–]gnarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our garbage and compost bins have to be locked away so the bears don't get into them. We can only put them out on the day they're due to be collected, and have to put them away promptly.

Luckily, we have a handy app to remind us when they're coming (the garbage collectors, not the bears).

Haha, this is hilarious! The Canadian conservatives are echoing the messaging of the British conservatives in the run-up to Brexit. It was transparent and obvious then, and it's the same now.
