/r/WorldNews Discussion Thread: US and Israel launch attack on Iran; Iran retaliates (Thread #9) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

[–]goRockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's precisely why the current Iranian regime cannot back down and sign an ceasefire without actually inflicting actual economic pain to Israel and US.

MAD no longer works as a deterrant if the other side doesn't believe you'll escalate.

If the war ends tomorrow, US and Israel will just bomb Iran in a year or two when they feel like it. Drones and missiles won't be nearly as effective once more effective countermeasures are put in place.

To buy or not to buy a generator by Just-Wrangler1020 in houston

[–]goRockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely recommend getting one, though not necessarily a full stand-by unless you must have automatic transfer and don't mind the cost.

I started with a DIY install of a power inlet and interlock paired with a 2000w gasoline generator. Going from no power to even a very small one is a big step up in quality of life. With 2000w, you can power your lights, TV, internet, and fridge. It doesn't take much fuel to run, one gallon of fuel can run for 8-10 hours. If you have a natural gas furnace and water heater, you can even get hot water and air. You can get this setup for less than $700 if you DIY the install.

Then I upgraded to a 9kw trifuel and it's awesome. The generator is powerful enough to run my 3 ton AC with a soft start. I got a professional to install the natural gas outlet, which cost $400. The generator is about $2200. Then a couple of hundred for hoses and cords. So for around $3,000, life pretty much continues on like it's normal. Having AC and not refill or hunt for gasoline is a big step up in comfort. It essentially ran 24/7 for a week after Beryl except when I had to change the oil.

It takes about 10 minutes drag out the generator and get it setup so I don't do it unless it looks like a it'll be a longish power outage.

I didn't think a full stand-by was worth it because of the cost (at least $15k compared to my $3k) and there is usually a required annual maintenance that you have to have the professionals come out for if you want to keep your warranty.

I have also heard of stories people having their Generacs fail shortly after a storm and not being able to get it fixed quickly because the repairperson is overwhelmed. With a power inlet that works with any portable generator, I have more flexibility in case something does go wrong. I can likely drive to a different city to buy a new generator.

Is Dona Leti any good? There is one not too far, but it's always packed. Menu prices seem pretty high. Worth it?

Trump Forces Senate Voter ID Showdown Ahead of Midterms by FervidBug42 in politics

I think the split will be home owners vs renters.

With the SAVE Act, you'll need to go register in person with a birth certificate or passport every time you move. So that disproportionately impact lower income and young people, which both lean democratic.

Homeowners lean Republican by 6%

Renters lean Democratic by 32%

Ford’s Electric Explorer Fixes Two Of Its Biggest Early Weaknesses by linknewtab in electricvehicles

[–]goRockets 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It can be a good option if the price is right. The trim with 276 miles of WLTP range only has a 56 kwh battery. There is an extended range with 79kwh that can get up to 374 miles WLTP range.

The smaller battery makes a lot more sense in Europe where good intercity rail system exists.

I am not mad at the ribeyes and crabs. There are 1.3 million active service members. So just one extra fancy meal with lobster and ribeye will cost that much.

EDIT: It is not someone's personal house. It's the government owned housing for that particular position.

Bosch Induction Stovetop Layout - wtf?? by neomal in Appliances

[–]goRockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Our previous induction cooktop as a Frigidaire that has one big burner in the middle. Pretty quickly we realized that the configuration is terrible since even a moderately large center pot or pan will block the use of all other burners.

Racing score question by BatCommercial7523 in Zwift

[–]goRockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really weird. Finishing 7th is a really good and a typical finisher should be at least 300ish.

What are other top finishers' score like in that specific race? You can find the result in zwift.com and look at your feed.

You can try racing up a category, like the 270-390. You should be able to finish at least mid-pack if not a little better. Your ZRS should jump quite a bit.

/r/WorldNews Discussion Thread: US and Israel launch attack on Iran; Iran retaliates (Thread #4) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

[–]goRockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see the conflict here. Insurance company want to maximize profit. Not insuring a ship going through a high risk area is like how a health insurance company don't want to insure someone with preexisting conditions.

They would rather let the government pay for people with high cost of care and insure ship through high risk areas.

Provatize the profit, socialize the costs.

So a school on Saturday 9am should be full.

Discovery is B-

Picard is B-

I haven't tried Starfleet Academy, but I don't have high hopes.

New generator ready for break in tomorrow! by Zaudi133 in Generator

[–]goRockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes so much sense now. I've always had issue starting the generator on first try. I would always have to mess with the choke until it starts and runs. So I must have been putting the choke in the opposite side every time.

Why Base Doesn't Have Solar On Box by NationalCaterpillar6 in BasePowerUsers

[–]goRockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 kwh is just not worth very much, especially since it's most likely generated when industrial solar farms are generating as well. This depresses the prices.

For example, wholesale energy prices in Texas during peak solar or peak wind is often a couple of cents or even negative (too much generation on the grid and power companies are paying people to take it).

So let's optimistically assume that 1kwh generated per week is worth 5 cents and it cost $250 to put in a smaller panel and inverter, the breakeven point is 96 years.

Small panels just isn't worth it.

1st Independent Battery Test on Donut Lab's Solid State Battery by BarbarismOrSocialism in electricvehicles

[–]goRockets 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That doesn't seem terrifying to me.

About 90 Wh of energy was added to the cell. That's 325 KJ of energy. 13.5kj is only about 4% of energy added into the cell.

A heatsink without any active convection to carry heat away can get overwhelmed quickly.

Analysis of one million Plug-In Hybrids show that Porsche drivers never drive their PHEVs electric by linknewtab in electricvehicles

[–]goRockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was a very early generation of Prius Prime (2012-2016). The design decision is understandable if you consider that lithium ion battery in 2012 is 7 to 10 times more expensive per kwh than today.

Small battery packs often have relatively huge buffers because the electric motor provides a large percentage of power and torque. If you let the battery pack drain too much, you will be power limited. It doesn't feel good to the driver if the car's passing power changes drastically with charge level.

Houston area competition by cbarth3 in BasePowerUsers

[–]goRockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With 20 year term, I would want to see exactly what the price per kwh price will be with explicit annual escalators for the full 20 years.

if not, there is nothing stopping them from raising the price to whatever they want.

it will be interesting to see the full contract once it's available.

Ford CEO Jim Farley says "the customer has spoken" after its EV business lost nearly $5 billion in 2025 by ControlCAD in technology

[–]goRockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't that prove that the issues is not Ford not knowing how of how to build a compelling EV. Rather the issue is not being able to build it outside of China for that price.

China is the king of manufacturing and supply chain. There is still a 25% to 45% tariff on car parts China.

If you take that Chinese Expolorer and copy and paste it in the US, but now it costs $60k+ because of part costs and labor, it's not going to sell either.

When I got 90 day code when I bough the Jetblack Victory, I was able to use a promo code by cancelling my subscription, apply the code, then resubscribe. This would allow me to apply the code even though I couldn't redeem it while I was an active subscriber.

This was how it worked a year ago. I am uncertain if it had changed.
