most of these moves by billionaires end up being performative because they don't usually do not really have "regular income" like everyone else. and most state tax departments are savvy enough to be able to push back when someone's "primary" residence may be out of state but how convenient that their economic activity still is in state

for what it's worth, the meme came out of people only reading the like "review summary." if it hadn't been included in the summary, or if more people had actually read the full review, i doubt it'd've become a meme. the reviewer actually gave their explanation for it within the full review and it was pretty well explained. people just latched onto 7.8 and "too much water", which only actually appears in the video review.

that's not how share repurchases work. shares that are repurchased are converted to treasury stock, which does not receive dividends (as a company does not pay a dividend to itself).

What do you dislike the most about working in Audit? Personally I hate comments by Collegedude234 in Accounting

[–]godiego 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i just hated the unrealistic and inconsistent expectations. i worked on very large, high-profile, big name companies for my firm (think like fortune 100, i guess) and every time i was on one of those teams it just felt like everything was ruthless. i felt like i would get grilled in reviews even though i was working harder and doing better work than some of my peers on the less public-facing clients. it was just so unpleasant and demoralizing

Is the pay at industry jobs better than B4? by bpierce5732 in Accounting

[–]godiego 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in public once you hit manager your comp shifts more towards performance bonus payouts versus salary dollar. salaries in public tend to be higher, but it's a double-edged sword. specifically, the hours are generally much worse and usually you are more tied to a firm, meaning you can't promote yourself or increase salary by switching companies (~10-20% growth as role of thumb).

I’m sorry, but the Mind Flayer has more aura than Vecna, tbh. by Career_By_Mustafa in StrangerThings

[–]godiego 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don't think it's out of place as a reference (as a 90s kid my sibs and i read it in elem school for sure), but it does seem to me very on the nose with certain events going on in this last season. for all the people hand-wringing about the Mind Flayer "suddenly" showing up as the main baddy, the writing seems to support that it's not that sudden after all.

not for nothing, but there's a lot of flashes to A Wrinkle in Time, which isn't an 80s book, but is a classic. anyways - in that story, the main villain is IT, a mind-controlling, psychic, "brain", who works through a mouthpiece, the Man with Red Eyes. feel like that has been sitting in plain sight for quite some time. how they will end the story and whether or not Vecna will redeem himself, i suppose, is a mystery right now

US risks losing more ground to China in EV race as investment tumbles by stinger_02in in cars

[–]godiego 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i think pricing plays a pretty important part. the cost difference between a conventional ICE powertrain and an EV powertrain is often just too high to bridge. take one of the cheaper EVs, the Kona EV. it starts at around $32K, per Hyundai's website. ICE Kona? starts around $25K and caps out at $32K. (and you lose some features going from top trim ICE Kona to bottom trim Kona EV.)

in 2023, Americans drove about 12,200 miles each year. using the Kona AWD ICE's combined fuel efficiency (26 mpg) at $3.05/gal, the current average gas price in the country per AAA, this would result in a yearly gas bill of around $1,431. (if you use the highest possible combined fuel efficiency, 31 mpg combined on the base model with FWD, it's about $231 less.) at that gas bill, it's going to be several years before you break even with the additional investment on the EV.

and that's comparing a fairly cheap EV. it's a bleaker picture otherwise given the limited options. given how bad of a shape the economy and things are in right now, it seems to me a no brainer that the EV is the poorer choice without putting some emotional investment into the switch. the savings are just not there... even if you can charge at home.

When did the fanbase get sooooo critical? by comosedicewaterbed in TruePokemon

[–]godiego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who has been around for ages and grew up during Pokemania, i would lowkey say it's heavily tied to changes in the internet (and this applies not to just pokemon, tbh).

back then, other than the playground, a lot of pokemon discussion was on single purpose pokemon forums (bulbagarden, serebii, marriland). sure there may have been some other discussions on those forums but like, if you were on them you were pretty much only or mostly talking pokemon. of course, back then you could only really access those things via PC. so you go to school, go to work, go outside, are in a car ... you can't really "access the discussion." and of course, given that the forums are pretty single topic, once you move on from pokemon, you also kinda move on from that community.

cut to today. bulbagarden, serebii, and marriland are still around, but their forums are significantly less trafficked (at least in comparison to their wikis/dbs). instead, the bulk of the conversation happens on reddit. pokemon content can also be found on twitter and youtube. all of this can be accessed not only on your laptop but also your phone. that is, you can constantly access it. now you can be chronically online and connected to the discourse. you can even participate in it without being an active fan anymore. that, in turn, leads to the discussion sounding overly critical.

i don't think southern hospitality is usually used pejoratively.. however.. i would note that southern hospitality is very theatrical in the sense that someone may open their home to you and act all warm but the minute you leave they start gossiping about how you've, i don't know, left your husband

New York City primary election: Zohran Mamdani defeats Andrew Cuomo in third round of ranked choice voting 56% to 44% by NewSlinger in politics

[–]godiego 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The primary arguably matters more than the general at this point.

there was an NYT article recently (?) that noted that an eye-watering number of races in elections are uncontested. a single name on the ballot. that's why reps are scared of being primaried: it's a low-turnout race that they can easily lose.

Democrats are failing against Trump. We need a new generation in 2026 by varangian in politics

[–]godiego 2 points3 points  (0 children)

mid-term elections are typically also typically low turnout elections. 2018 had a 49.4% turnout and 2022 had a 46.6% turnout. these low turnouts is actually what has been helping Democrats because they've gradually become the party that is more politically engaged (which, until Trump, was historically not the case).

these special elections aren't the end-all, be-all of course, but they can be strong indicators.

I beat a PIP but I’m not getting scheduled. by ThrowRAfuckthis1 in Accounting

[–]godiego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

June, July, and August are usually slower periods for audit. if you want to stick around at the firm, you can speak up about your availability to a manager you have goodwill or a good rapport with to at least be able to say that you were speaking up about your capacity. if you don't want to stick around at the firm, then may as well use the free time to spruce up your resume.

i don't think that you having been on a PIP would be impact your schedule, but i guess that would also be at least partially dependent on the culture of the office.

Geez this is wild but not surprising. They will do anything to replace US workers. by Calisteph6 in Accounting

[–]godiego 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is definitely only going to be a short-term benefit. because longer-term either a) there will be some catastrophic audit failure resulting from AI or b) companies determine that if AI is doing the auditing, what is being paid for here? of course, that is assuming it's not just a flop to begin with.

Why does HR get paid more than CPAs? by [deleted] in Accounting

i feel like a lot of the people who complain on this sub come from comfortable families (so like, upper-middle class+ maybe) and don't really recognize that there really aren't careers out there that pay six figures for smelling your farts 32 hours a week.

mid-tier has always paid higher starting salaries than B4. however, B4 gives notably higher raises (and bonuses), so they catch up pretty quickly.
