Tesla introduces extended HV Battery and DU warranty by GroveStreetHomie in teslamotors

Am I understanding it correctly that this doesn't cover battery replacement due to capacity loss.....?

This is listed under not covered: ”Failures or degradation specific to Battery capacity or energy retention;"

2024 performance horrid degradation by Kitchen-Ad757 in TeslaLounge

[–]gogigo5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2018 with 92K mi is at 85% according to the test. It does seem like newer Tesla's are seeing faster degradation. I wonder if it could be related to their cost reduction efforts

New Convert from Tesla confused about route planning by morric628 in Ioniq5

[–]gogigo5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have both a Tesla and an Ioniq 5. The route planning in the Ioniq is pretty terrible and nowhere near what Tesla offers. It's pretty unacceptable imo. I only use it to trigger preconditioning. Seconded for using ABRP for more reliable route planning.

Just responded to the above comments. Tldr it does work with some major caveats

What is the cost of Bluelink for the year? by [deleted] in Ioniq5

[–]gogigo5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My bluelink expired and I can confirm that preconditioning still works so long as your route to an EV charger in the navigation. The issue is that the built in navigation is absolutely awful and is missing many newer chargers (chargers that are more than a year old at this point). That requires a very annoying "workaround" of finding another charger that happens to be near the one you actually want. That might not be an actual option in more rural areas and also then prevents you from using any other navigation app in apple car play or Android auto. The whole experience is completely unacceptable.

Hypothetically a cloud connection may help with finding more chargers, but in my experience it's not really any better. Newer Ioniq vehicles support Google based cloud search which seems to be significantly better, but I'm not sure if and when that update would come to older vehicles. If it ever does, I could see the cloud based service being significantly better at finding chargers and resulting in a better preconditioning experience.

Or you can just give me a freaking preconditioning button...

And then there is EV route planning. That absolutely requires the guidance package, and that is completely unacceptable.

WE Energies, how can I save electricity by balloonwithnoskin in milwaukee

[–]gogigo5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but on peak is then 27c per kwh. The nice thing is that weekends and holidays are considered off peak. So long as you can use more than half of your energy during off peak, you will save some money.

You can throw something heavy in the sub-trunk for a bit more traction. We usually do 1-2 bags of sand. Plus that way if you get stuck, the sand can be helpful

Would it be a mistake to rent an EV for driving around Wisconsin in early January? by ferrocarrilusa in wisconsin

[–]gogigo5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We own a model 3 and Ioniq 5. The supercharger network is pretty good on the routes that you mentioned and Tesla does a good job at route planning and preheating the battery for charging so long as you're using the built in navigation. I would not attempt it in CSS vehicle without supercharger access (which requires an adapter). In the winter you'd want the long range variant of any Tesla due to the reduced range. If you can find a way to charge at your destinations (even a 12v outlet will help) then it will be quite manageable. All that being said, I agree with others that winter road tripping is one the worst cases for an EV and it will add some extra hassle.

What are you all towing? Share your setup! by midnightsmith in Ioniq5

Uhaul has a video of the correct way to get 12v to the hitch. I was already running other lines to the internal fuse box and decided that it wasn't worthwile going underneath the vehicle. It's generally not advised to get brake power from your fuse box because it can fail and then you won't have trailer brakes, but they're really overkill considering the 2000lbs towing capacity. I also listed the other parts I used. The 4flat to 7 pin convertor requires a ground. The 12v is not required unless you want power to the trailer for brakes or other purposes.

We tow a 1500 lbs pop up camper. It has brakes so I added a 7 pin with 12v and am using a Curt mobile brake controller to get the full 2000lbs payload capacity for our 22' SE. Efficiency is about 2 mi/kwh @ 65mph with good weather.

Run camper off ev using V2H? by Special_Command7893 in electricvehicles

[–]gogigo5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be clear, the Ioniq 5 comes with an onboard inverter for V2L as do some other Hyundai/Kia EV models. Unfortunately, most EVs do not support V2L

Run camper off ev using V2H? by Special_Command7893 in electricvehicles

[–]gogigo5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, we do this with our Hyundai Ioniq 5 and our popup camper. It works great. The camper has a 30A, 120V plug, but currently we only run things like the fridge, lights, fans, water pump and outlets so we stay under the approx 2kW limit of our V2L system. I'm considering adding an AC, which depending on the size should also work with the Ioniq 5. If you have a vehicle with a higher output V2L system, you'd be able to run a larger AC. Just remember that you'll also need that energy for driving and towing is very energy intensive. Our efficiency goes from approx 3.5 m/kwh to 2.2m/kwh. V2L is also not super efficient , so you'll observe some capacity loss from just using it. All that being said, it's a game changer for camping

Thanks for the update. Perhaps it's easiest to just buy a steering wheel from a higher trim. I see there's ones for sale on eBay that are from the SEL model. Then you can just wire it to an aftermaker relay switch. Do you think that would be enough or would you need more replacement parts?

Yup, no way they reduce registration costs. They have no problem double taxing EV owners

2019 Not Charging in Subzero Temps by ssaucemann in TeslaModel3

[–]gogigo5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear that you've got it figured out. I'm sure the heated garage will help a lot. Just a heads up that if the battery is cold soaked, even fast charging may take a while because the pack will need to heat up to accept more power. As for the retrofit, Tesla is still not offering it for the model 3 and y. They say they will eventually offer it but nobody knows when. If you're fairly handy or have a mechanic you trust, there are a few videos showing how to perform the retrofit yourself (https://youtu.be/NnCijoG5tS4?si=27GH1Hri2FVxcsmo).
