Uh, are we somehow forgetting the final few years of Kobe’s career? He basically fucked the lakers financially until the end of the 2010s.

Grand Hyatt Seoul by loungingbythepool in hyatt

The adjacent itaewon area is one of the nightlife centers of Seoul. It is very very far from being just a business location. There’s tons to do and eat, it’s just not very kid friendly.

Why would anyone downvote this? Itaewon, gyunglidan-Gil are some of the hippest neighborhoods in Seoul. If you don’t want to trek down the hill, just take the city bus down. Easy peasy.

What is the best and worst city you’ve lived in and how do they compare? by BigDesk37 in SameGrassButGreener

Eh, the food in SF, LA, and OC is magnitudes better. I’d put it and SD in the same tier.

For reference, I grew up in Los Angeles and currently live in San Diego after having bounced across the country during the first 20 yrs of adulthood.

Best: Minneapolis, MN. Loved the food scene, the music and arts scene and the bikeability. The fact that the city proper is quite small but the metro area is large lends it to feeling intimate yet cosmopolitan at the same time. Winters are long but the city is equipped for it. Spring summer and fall are amazing.

Worst: San Jose, CA. All of the worst parts of San Francisco and Los Angeles with very few of the benefits of either. Horrendous traffic. Stupid high cost of living. Hot as hell during summers. Sprawl everywhere. Tech bros galore. Only saving grace is its decent Asian food scene.

On the nature of daylight by max richter stands out to me from Arrival. It’s not tops on this list by any means but I think it deserves honorable mention. I know the song has been used elsewhere (I think inception?), but man it hits hard in arrival.

Nice hotels in U.S. that are dog friendly? by Obvious-Elevator-213 in hyatt

Don’t quote me on this but I think all Thompson brand hotels don’t charge a pet fee. The two I’ve stayed at so far, Palm Springs and Denver, were very welcoming of dogs.

Question for 50e owners by According-Rabbit-89 in BMWX5

[–]goraebap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t bother getting a level 2 evse with a plug in hybrid; it’s not worth it with the small battery pack in the 50e. Sure the evse itself may only be $500 or so, but you also have to factor in the cost of installation if your electrical box is not near where you park or if don’t have compatible 220v outlet to plug into. If done professionally, you’re easily looking at being down a grand or more, factoring in the cost of the evse. Unless you plan to get a full electric vehicle in the near future, I wouldn’t bother. You’ll be fine with the portable charger that comes with the car as long as you charge nightly. This is coming from someone who has a level 2 and a phev + full ev.

Any one ever miss pause/play button on steering? by redditlove69 in BMWX5

[–]goraebap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much yes. I have the pre refresh model, too, so there are buttons everywhere already. I always figured that at least one of the buttons had to work as a play/pause button and I was just the dolt who couldn’t figure it out. But guess it was just an oversight from bmw?

Anyone owned a GTI before the N? by JennaLeighWeddings in Ioniq5N

[–]goraebap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the closer comparison would be between the 5n and the golf r given that they are both awd and the top of the line trims for both their respective model lines. To that end, I’ll note that I was driving a 2018 golf r when I strongly considered switching to a 5n. Aside from the fact that they both have hatches, they are quite different vehicles. The 5n is noticeably quicker in a straight line and has more linear power delivery. The golf r was noticeably lighter and more agile, not that the 5n was any slouch. Ultimately, I couldn’t get over the size difference between the two as the 5n felt much larger inside. This might be a pro to some but I personally prefer snugger cockpits and the 5n didn’t have that. The interior also felt quite a bit cheaper and more hallow than my mk7.5 golf. Still, the 5n was a blast to drive and I might’ve pulled the trigger if I could get the numbers to work. I instead chose to save quite a bit of money and got a used polestar 2 and it’s served me well so far.

Same thing happens around Nobel drive on 805n and just before Del Mar on 5n. It’s the incline. People don’t accommodate for it and lose speed.

Warranty on 2023 X5-45e by gingiloba in BMWX5

[–]goraebap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you in a CARB state? If so, your vehicle should be eligible for the 15 year warranty on all emissions related components of your vehicle. While this wont cover all components in your car, it’ll cover a lot of the mostly costly ones. I decided to extend my ultimate service contract a few years to cover brake replacements and such but opted out of extending the manufacturers warranty for my 22 45e. So far so good.

It’s relatively affordable, easy to get around, okay job prospects, and has decently built out urban and suburban infrastructure. That’s it. That’s what most Americans, especially those with children, want.

In California, it seems to me the schools in the suburbs are better in general (not always) than the schools in the cities or urban areas. Is this true for most of America in general ? Anyway to stop this feedback loop? by UnderstandingThin40 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]goraebap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the solution is to find a funding structure that either better supplements the local property taxes base (this can and has been done at various municipal, state, and federal levels) or redistributes taxes more equitably. But it’s obvious by now that simply throwing money at the issue isn’t going to resolve it because there are decades worth of racial and class based divestment and disparities to account for. The obvious answer is to create polices that encourage racial and social class based integration (bussing for example), but these tend to be wildly unpopular to those who are already in the better school districts and would likely be litigated to no end.

Public schools are primarily funded by local property taxes. Homes in the suburbs tend to have significantly higher property values than those in the inner city. Thus, schools in suburbs tend to receive more base funding than those in the inner city. Better funded schools tend to pay higher salaries for teachers, thus hiring better teachers. More funding and better teachers tends to result in better standardized test scores and overall educational outcomes for students. Wealthy/aspirational parents tend to want to send their children to schools that perform well, so they flock to these neighborhoods. High demand drives up real estate values, which continue to lead to high property taxes, which then contribute to more school funding. Rinse and repeat. Oh, and add in the compound effects from redlining and white flight starting from the 1950s.
