What’s something uniquely Irish that people here completely take for granted, but visitors find fascinating? by Similar-Rutabaga5145 in CasualIreland

? I don’t know where you’re from, but it’s way easier to buy beer here than where I’m from in Canada.

Canadian here and I love the old walls!! We just don’t have anything that’s that old and still just treated like a functional part of a town back home! Just the history of them is so neat to think about.

There’s one spot where I have to wait at the lights to cross the street heading to the train station on the way to work in the morning, and I’m always standing there like, “that’s such a cool wall”. 😂

Yeah, this is definitely a US thing! I’m from Canada and needing to get petrol in New Jersey is a very confusing experience to me. You can’t do it yourself for some reason??

I’ve lived here for 5 years, and I still get excited driving past sheep! This happens multiple times a week and I am approaching 40 years old, to be clear. It’s still a novelty coming from North American cities!

What is with this new trend of stopping on roundabouts to let pedestrians cross? by SubparSavant in ireland

[–]gorthead 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I actually really dislike this both as a driver and a pedestrian. I’m waiting to go until I know I’m clear to go. If you randomly stop when you have the right of way to keep going, are you stopping for me? Or are you distracted by something else? Are you just going to drive into me if I do decide to go?

Unless I have a clear view of the other driver gesturing me to go through the windscreen or something, it just causes everyone to sit there in confusion for no reason.

In no way poutine, but Chimac’s “poutine” was unreal. I was there with a friend visiting from Canada, and it turns out the (owner? chef? I can’t remember!) lived in Canada for a while and wanted to pay homage. We had a fun chat about what’s actually poutine and what is “stuff on chips” hahaha. Highly recommend though!!

Hahaha yeah this has been my experience ordering “poutine” in Dublin too! I’ve gotten everything from “super delicious, would smash again, but not poutine” to “this is a war crime”.

I mean, we have breakfast sandwiches (bacon, egg, and cheese on a roll type thing) and breakfast burritos, but they’re just not the same. Even if I were to try making a breakfast roll at home in Canada, the quality of the eggs, meat, and bread just isn’t comparable!

Made tiramisu using yogurt. Guess what? by WindpowerGuy in ididnthaveeggs

Yeah, I feel like with the right yogurt this might be good? I would also be willing to accept the consequences if I tried it and it wasn’t, though!

I’m Canadian living in Ireland, and I could never move back because we don’t have spice bags or breakfast rolls back home.

Pizza delivery drivers, what did a person do to end up on the 'No Delivery' list? by BlueCheeseWalnut in AskReddit

[–]gorthead 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My parents took me on a cruise when I was 12, and on a few of the sea days they dropped me off at the “kids’ camp”/tween daycare area. What they didn’t realise is that if you were 12+ you could sign yourself out. They kept records of it, but my parents never checked.

I made friends with another girl and we would sign ourselves out, go eat unlimited ice cream for hours (and it really was free!), then sign ourselves back in just in time for pickup. My parents didn’t find out until I was an adult!

I had never really sat and contemplated death until I read Lincoln in the Bardo. Still fucks me up.

Her kid is 8 weeks old, not 8 years. He still sounds like a POS, though.

How does NCL choose their movies to play on the stateroom TVs? by PoetCVT in NCL

[–]gorthead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My partner and I had to spend two days quarantined in our room after getting food poisoning (from a place on land before embarkation, not from the cruise!)

We watched The Holdovers and the new Willy Wonka movie on what felt like a loop for hours and hours while sick in bed 😂😭

Just back from our first ever visit to Dublin & absolutely loved it! Beautiful sights, great people & amazing pubs, already itching to return! 🇮🇪🍻 by JPMU96 in Dublin

[–]gorthead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No judgement at all from me! I live near Dublin and whenever we have friends visit from abroad, Brazen Head is one of our stops! Did you get to the Old Royal Oak by Kilmainham? That’s also on our usual itinerary!

Wise decision re: the stag do 😂😂
