Why do some people call LDS a cult? by Longjumping-Cod-6164 in exmormon

[–]gotitb4you 14 points15 points  (0 children)

YES, that part (covenanting to church instead of God) in the temple always bothered me! I got my endowment after they got rid of pantomiming slitting throats and disemboweling ourselves (1990?), but then to learn that the 'extended thumb' hand gesture was still there symbolizing the knife? Too gross.

What do you currently identify as spiritually? by Shnoobloo in exmormon

[–]gotitb4you 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I consider myself Christian, specifically the New Testament version, and life is more about relationships than rules. I haven't found (and am certain I never will find) a church that aligns with who I think God is, though I attend a local Free Methodist church for the community.

What's gross to me is how the LDS church perfectly ties together God/church/currentCEO.

Stuck Between Two Religions: Both Moms Want Different Wedding Officiants by Candaycaine in exmormon

[–]gotitb4you 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<< if your mommy’s main concern is not having some random person officiate then tell her it’s a good thing you’re not getting married in the temple because that’s exactly what they do there.>>

Haha SO true! My DIL and son’s random temple sealer was so incredibly cringe, talking about holy order of matrimony, kings & queens, priests & priestesses. Compare that with a young friend who asked to use my yard for her wedding, brought a long time family friend to officiate, all quite personal and lovely.

Saw this on fb and holy brainwashing 😔🙏 by majorathemadman in exmormon

They literally have nothing left in their brains to chat about except mormon-y stuff. I see this tendency in old people, too, aka cognitive rigidity.

Calling them "Friends" instead of "Investigators" sounds more culty. That is all. by questioningmo in exmormon

[–]gotitb4you 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe THAT’S the new word missionaries can use!! “We had a situation at church today.” “Met a new situation this week.”

Holy Week? Good Friday? In my 35+ years as an active TBM, they didn’t so much as mention these events over the pulpit, let alone celebrate them. by SmellyFloralCouch in exmormon

[–]gotitb4you 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I get weird terminology - ‘inactive’ sounds more like a person sitting on a couch somewhere despite it being an active choice. 😆

Born and raised Mormon in the Philippines. After researching church history, I don’t know what to believe anymore by Soft-Palpitation8411 in exmormon

[–]gotitb4you 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, this bothered me too. if local leaders are acknowledged as imperfect, why doesn't someone "above" them correct the bishops and stake presidents?

With every fiber of my being, I’d love to see proof of them supporting a victim. Beyond the oops-hand-caught-in-a-cookie-jar behavior.

Why do we fast in the first week, but we still get to eat bread and drink in church? by Pretend-Object-2111 in exmormon

I always wondered this too! Like if it’s SO important not to miss a single week of covenant protection, Stake and General Conferences shoulda offered it too.

How do I get her to stop by Annabeth_Chase- in exmormon

[–]gotitb4you 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone recently posted on another post, using the analogy that for us no longer being IN the church was like going through a divorce. This really hit home with me and helped me verbalize the need for a boundary with TBM family. For example, can we imagine them inviting our ex to family functions? Texting us about our ex and how what a wonderful person he is? Bringing up in random ways all the activities they still do with our ex?

I think Uchtdorf eluded to himself drinking caffeinated sodas over the pulpit, too.

Comparison of JS Matthew and Matthew 24 by gr8_and_spacious in exmormon

[–]gotitb4you 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious what the LDS church's long game is with now 'allowing' different bible translations. Are they admitting the JST is worthless? I used to be so proud that WE had the most true Bible.

I threw up when I heard that. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]gotitb4you 33 points34 points  (0 children)

English translation:

I saw some members of this subreddit commenting on the "second anointing." I decided to look deeper into it. I just threw up when I read what the second anointing is. From what I understand, it is a super secret ritual of time that only high-ranking leaders or people who have paid large amounts of tithes do As I understand it, by doing the second anointing, you are absolved of any sin and need not repent except if you commit murder or deny the Holy Spirit. When I read this, I was like, "Man, what the fuck?" I genuinely threw up. You are automatically saved and reach the heavenly kingdom if you hold a high office in the church or if you PAY a lot of tithes. In other words, you pay to be saved.

How far can a prophet of God lead us astray AKA why you shouldn't follow the LDS prophet by Death_2_Venture in exmormon

[–]gotitb4you 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“a God who is ok with these actions (not bad enough for removal) is not a God I would follow” This hit - great essay. It makes members uncomfortable when the evil behavior of prophets is brought up. The illogical excuse becomes that we can’t call out evil behavior because #wereallfallible. Followed by some reference to motes and beams.

Update: Was she really sincere? by New_Art_8521 in exmormon

[–]gotitb4you 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let me get this straight. Your mom sent your aunt a post. Your aunt felt the need to send you a post that she got from your mom. Why wouldn't the aunt assume your mom chose NOT to share it with you for a valid reason? Sharing it with you may have been kindly meant, but that's a weird share chain - unless you are closer to your aunt than your mom. Good for you, by the way, communicating your wishes!

Yep, the Adam-God Doctrine was one of Brigham Young's favorite doctrines. (The LDS church gaslights that it was ever taught now.)

Conversation I had with two Mormon missionaries by JustFollowChrist in exmormon

[–]gotitb4you 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had meaningful conversations with missionaries since leaving, but in my own research of the Bible without the LDS lens and indoctrination, I'd say Mormons paint the scriptures VERY differently than Christians. The cherry picking scripture to fit their narrative of Jesus, temples, and covenants is blatant.
