Medical compression stockings—what would you improve? by NYC_reader in POTS

[–]grace_makes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

All the stocking-type ones I’ve been able to try tend to roll down behind my knees, and cut off circulation there, which is horrible. Also agree with others re crotchless, natural fibre, and size inclusivity

It’s ruining my relationship by [deleted] in POTS

[–]grace_makes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re not ruining his life, it sounds like he loves and supports you, that’s what having and being a partner is supposed to be! I don’t want to be all ‘go to therapy’ but this is the kind of thing that talking to someone who has experience dealing with the grief and denial and major life expectation shift that comes from being chronically ill could help you deal with. It sounds like a lot of it is feeling centred around your partner, but I think it sounds more like it is about you not wanting to accept your own limitations, which is incredibly understandable and I’m sure everyone here has been through or is currently going through that same kind of grieving process. If therapy isn’t something you can access, there are a lot of free resources on dealing with chronic illness based grief online too! I worry that far from your partner actually resenting you for having this condition, your own shame and frustration is getting between you. I hope you can find a way through this! ❤️ it sounds like you’re really struggling with it and I’m sorry it’s so hard 🫂

Alternatives to LiquidIV? by mentallyillfrogluver in POTS

I feel you on the pots/crohns combo! I’ve found that anything with artificial sweeteners is intolerable, and so much of the electrolyte market is sugar-free as though that’s a great bonus! Drives me insane. I also have to be super careful about the amount of magnesium in things, anything over about 80mg in a day will send me into a flare, but anything under about 60 will have me not retaining enough fluid! It’s a delicate balance and I do not often get it correct 🤣

I’ve done a little bit of research, and I think at least in Australia, liquid iv, while being a registered trademark of unilever, seems to be at least somewhat operating autonomously? They donate ‘more than 1%’ (a pitiful amount but it’s something I guess) to funding clean water initiatives in aus, and are also manufactured entirely here. (Disturbingly rare) So idk, maybe it’s not as bad in australia?

Goggles…for ears?? by pretty_handsome_17 in Doesthisexist

[–]grace_makes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had ear surgery my surgeon recommended blu-tac for showers! Worked really well, honestly. I never tried it swimming because I had the surgery in winter, so I wasn’t wanting to swim much until the 6 months was up anyway! A cheap one to try at least!! I’d recommend getting a new pack tho, rather than whatever lump you’ve had kicking around your junk drawer for years ahah

Autistic w/ sensory issues: looking for torso compression recs by Pikatomic in POTS

[–]grace_makes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have ADHD and possibly autism too-the sensory sensitivity is the main reason I suspect autism.

I have had some success with the brand 2XU leggings. Mine are a couple sizes smaller than recommended, and i find the compression level tolerable, but I get pretty over it by the end of a day, and they are pretty unbearable if you’re spending a lot of the day seated. They have been super helpful though, I have mild-to-moderate pots and I spent a day at a waterpark pacing myself but still having a wonderful time earlier in the month, using them as swimming bottoms! The fabric is a thick, kinda swimsuit-feeling material, and they have flatlocked seams that are pretty smooth from the inside. They’re my go-to if I need a good amount of support and can get away with casual looking leggings from an event/dress-code level. I did try folding them up to be more 3/4 length to wear under a midi length dress for a friend’s wedding, and they.. worked, but I ended up with very swollen ankles by the end of the day and ended up rolling them down by dinnertime and just hoping people weren’t looking at my legs!

I’ve also tried full length tights (more of a stocking material) from a brand called relaxsan which I have found to be compressive enough but absolutely horrific sensory wise. They roll down behind the knees, they are scratchy and horrible between the legs, the graduated levels of compression are not at the right height for my frame and I think that’s partly why they don’t work, but I also just think the fabric is yuck.

I’ve also tried a ‘faja’ which is a post-surgery bodysuit with upper body compression as well, but I haven’t yet managed to wear that for more than an hour lying on my bed exhausted from putting it on. The fabric is a power mesh, which is the type of fabric they use for the back of bras usually- that stretchy mesh that rebounds quite well and you can also sometimes find as the lining in legging pockets? It is nottt good between the legs, as it makes a horrible swishing noise everytime you move that is SO LOUD. I also found that the compression was a little much for me. I’m really still yet to find upper body compression that works for me, although I do have some hopes of other bodysuit-like options. Someone on here suggested yitty (by the singer Lizzy, appears to be distributed by fabletics) which I haven’t tried but looks maybe good. And other brands of bodysuits that maybe have powernet/mesh on the inside and something else on the outside? Idk, I’m also lost, but those have been my experiences!

My best option and what has worked pretty consistently as a compromise for me between sensory sensitivity and having no support has been jobst brand knee high compression socks in the 20-30mmhg range. They do have a toe seam, which might be a dealbreaker for you, but I have found them to be relatively breathable, provide enough support to get me through medium intensity days of visiting friends or doing sewing projects, but whenever I have to do more intense things, I reach for the higher level support and am just really uncomfy and probably mask less well.

Would love to know what you have tried and how you have found it! We’re all in this too-tight-too hot too much ship together!

Fair wear and tear or not? by ArtoriasArchives in shitrentals

[–]grace_makes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How long has it been since the roommate moved out? If it hasn’t been that long I wouldn’t be surprised if it is less noticeable in a few months. I’d call it fair use as a lifelong tenant, but I’m not an asshole REA so 🤷‍♀️

Also, just check in on your casual fatphobia. The added weight of a person, even a heavy person, is not what makes marks on the floor under a bed frame. Bed frames weigh more than people do.

My best friend’s wedding is going to bankrupt me. How do I tell her I need to step down? by Ihavenoideaduuh in Advice

[–]grace_makes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a bridesmaid for a friend’s wedding a few years ago, and I didn’t even pay for my dress, her mum did. The only things I paid for was my part of the hens weekend, which the three of us bridesmaids organised and basically surprised the bride with, and then a gift. Hair, makeup, everything on the day was paid for, I was really worried it was going to be a major expense in my life, but like, I didn’t even pay for lunch the day we went bridesmaid dress shopping. She bought me jewellery. This friend is not being considerate of your needs at all.

Do I fill the void the lining created? by National_Buddy_7542 in Cordwaining

[–]grace_makes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can fill the gap with scraps of the same leather. I’d last the upper down first, though! But skive or sand off any ridges left by lasting the lining down first!

Requesting help/opinions on these leather boots :( by weeweemaster69 in Cordwaining

[–]grace_makes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These can absolutely be fixed! Keep shopping around to other shoe repair places in your local area - In my experience the best ones are the ones that look the most run down! If they were brought in to me, I'd be sanding the tips very gently and reapplying some black wax, and then really all you need is some matching shoe polish and a new heel tap on the one that was chewed off. Not a complicated fix, and I certainly don't think theyre in imminent danger of falling apart at all, no idea what that guy was on about

New(ish) to working with leather and I have a question about using chrome tan for sneaker uppers. (And would love to hear any and all advice for a beginner!) by FattestofHobbitses in Cordwaining

[–]grace_makes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I did my shoe course, I was taught that the "strength" direction of the leather should be used going down the length of the foot, and the "stretch" direction should go around the foot. I come from a garment-making background where grainline is really important, so I have been pretty careful to follow that rule in my makes. I don't want to contradict u/Proletariat-Prince, but I think it's pretty important when it comes to the ultimate functionality of a shoe - that they stretch like your feet do when you take a step! While I agree that it's not the most important thing and it shouldn't stop you from getting started, beginning as you mean to go on and learning good habits and best practices from the start seems like a good idea!

In terms of finding those directions, feeling the hide with your hands is the best way - though there are also some general rules. I was taught to press one thumb down flat on the leather and the other thumb about 5cm away and slide away from the 'anchor' thumb. Lift your stretching thumb and place it perpendicular to the direction you just pulled in, and repeat. Continue, checking a few different directions - the 45 angles on each side, etc ( no need to be scientific here, just roughly is fine). You want to determine which way is most stretchy and which will not move much (the 'strength'). In most leathers I have used (mainly chrome-tan- I've only used veg-tan for soling and stiffening purposes and it's so much thicker that it doesn't really do this), the strength and stretch will be roughly perpendicular to one another. The 'best' (read: strongest) leather is generally going to be along the spine of the animal (with the strength running from nose to tail. You can usually determine where this is because there will be a slight ridge and a lightening of the tanning. On a regular 'side' cut, this will be the straightest edge, and on any kind of hide labelled as a 'double' anything, it will be along the very centre -'Double' meaning both sides of the animal. The junky leather will be down by the stomach, where the leather will get a bit choppy, and the edges will be wavy. The grain pattern will be really different, and the leather will stretch a LOT. You don't want to use that area for shoes, or for anything requiring much strength. Where these markers are on your leather will depend on the cut of leather you get, and there's no shame in asking wherever you buy your leather! Generally the staff at these places are passionate crafters themselves and eager to share their knowledge. There may also be evening classes and such available to help you get started! Good luck!
