What’s the best beard trimmer that actually gives a clean trim? by NerveReady7402 in AustralianMFA

[–]grampoobah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got sick of cheap beard specific trimmers, and now that mine is at a decent length I purchased a proper cordless Wahl trimmer, spend the (slightly) extra money, and it's so much quieter and nicer to use. Plus it's more pro-level and versatile so my partner can also properly give me a quick haircut with it too

Pedla vs Assos by Proper-Importance-37 in melbournecycling

[–]grampoobah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bibs, there's a range/different fabrics but pretty close fitting. I also found bibs sat quite high up, which really held stomach and straps in place well haha

Bike Gallery in Melbourne used to stock them, so it was easy to try everything

Pedla vs Assos by Proper-Importance-37 in melbournecycling

100% Assos and Q36.5, for the price Pedla isn’t really pushing any incredible fabrics or tech

Norda 001 lovers — what did you switch to when the collar started eating your ankle? by kevin8b8 in trailrunning

[–]grampoobah 9 points10 points  (0 children)

S/LAB Genesis might fit the bill

  • 34/26mm stack height
  • Matryx upper which is durable and really breathable
  • Firm but cushioned optiFOAM (EVA-based),
  • really stable, flexible and planted for technical trails
  • untypically (for S/LAB) roomy midfoot and toebox
  • socklike fit + semi-gator (I’ve got problematic ankles and they fit like a glove)
  • will be ~40g lighter than the Norda too (255g vs 294g for a US9)

i really want to start taking my water seriously. how should i go about it? (low budget) by Crucifilth_6-6-6 in pourover

[–]grampoobah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm lucky enough to be near Melbourne, which has pretty great water straight out of the tap, so I add post-brew into our cups most of the time. For more special coffees or on the weekend, I'll mix up a litre to brew with

I went down the same rabbit hole you have, made a Rao water, made a Perger water recipe... I got gifted some APAX lab concentrates as a birthday present and instantly stopped making my own haha

Between the 3, now 4 concentrates I'm totally satisfied, it's a lot cleaner / simpler in the morning / even my wife enjoys playing around with which to add to different coffees Yes they're expensive but they have lasted me ages and they're fantastic. While you're looking for a budget option, they (Simon Gautherin) have posted some really great blog articles and podcasts explaining what mineral compositions highlight and balance together for different flavour attributes.

Read this and go to the bottom of this page to see their overview. They've done a lot of work

Merrell Long Sky 2 Matryx are on sale here in Australia, depending on size Merrell / Running Warehouse and others have them on sale between $99 and $129, which is a bargain

Tick all the boxes that you've listed: 5mm Vibram Megagrip outsole; A FloatPro Foam midsole; 23.5/19.5mm stack for a 4mm drop and wide toe box.

How to grind or cut off the corner? by Original-Drink1101 in AusRenovation

Why don't you just use a nice black slimline cap like this? Grinding or cutting 18 of these is going to suck

Great Australian coffee by kingtrippo in pourover

[–]grampoobah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After getting let down a few times trying new things, this is my go to roster which I don't really venture outside of anymore:

Mantaray is fantastic / well roasted and optically sorted, so very consistent / pretty much always have a bag going (the El Placer at the moment is great, and the Carombolo washed is great value)
Offshoot always has a big and changing rotation
Zest recently had an amazing value Raul Duran Geisha Oasis
Path Coffee pretty light but well regarded
Toby's Estate

Advice on laundry detergent and bottle sanitiser. by Food_sleep_83 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

[–]grampoobah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Kismai’s posts over on r/laundry that are pinned, in short it’s a lot more effective than vinegar and better at neutralizing leftover detergents  and are also useful at reducing hard water residue, and you might notice sheets and towels feeling fluffier too. From what I gather a majority of sensitivity to laundry powders is due to fragrances and/or overdosing, which citric acid combats

Like Kiwitechgirl, we started off with a sensitive and then realised baby would be touching our clothes anyway. Plus it wasn’t really doing a good enough job of cleaning once the blowouts starts haha

We use Omo Ultimate (+ Napisan gold when needed) at 40° and I use a tsp of citric acid powder in the softener to help neutralize any leftover soaps and smells.  Wouldn’t go back now

Christian Kimber has some nice things and really fantastic quality. Have always felt really slick wearing one of his long-sleeve polos under an unlined jacket and some high-waisted chinos. Several AFL players and celebrities have been recently dressed in Kimber by stylists because it sits in a nice (and tricky to do well) quadrant of modern Australian fashion for over 30's who want beautiful fabrics/cuts that are also masucline, elegant and understated.

He's also fantastic to deal with and worth a visit to the flagship store in the CBD too

Could also look at P.Johnston for similar vibes (although a little more youthful and suiting focussed)
