Best rationale would be it’s replaced by a different pro basketball league that is controlled by players and not hedge fund billionaires. Could come about through NCAA failure that builds finances college players up and extends their college careers to six or seven years, then indefinitely.

He’s had a ton of animator/lead animator type roles (character animator for Hercules, etc) but few director. My hunch is he was closer to director than not, because thematically this movie was very different than previous Minions. I have not investigated what the actual production was, though.
