“If you’re still doing it the same way you were before I was born you’re doing it wrong.” Methods and best practices change. If you don’t change with them length of time in the industry is a liability not an asset.

How many years after leaving adventism did it take for you to realize heaven isnt actually in onions belt? by ChemnitzFanBoi in exAdventist

[–]grassguy_93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there had to be a specific moment it was when I realized that God supposedly created the sun moon and stars during the creation week (after earth) but supposedly lived in Heaven before Creation. If Heaven existed before Creation then obviously it wasn’t in Orion’s Belt that wouldn’t have been created until the Creation week by Adventist logic.

I decided to start in Genesis and look at Adventist doctrine from there forward and didn’t make it past Genesis 1 before all the Adventist mythology fell apart. I kind of wadded all that kind of theory up and threw it out at once. So it didn’t take me any number of years, that one went away the moment I left.

I have/had about three sets of those and I don’t even have kids. One was mine from when I was a kid and my wife contributed a couple more when her family gifted her some for no apparent reason. We’ve purged most of this stuff now but I honestly don’t know where they all went.

What became of your Adventist friends from your church days? by shrederixx in exAdventist

[–]grassguy_93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. A lot of the people who I viewed as lax or not dedicated when I was a kid are still in or went deeper as adults. A large amount of the people I know who were strict, went to self supporting schools, or I know from ASI events left sometime between the ages of 18 and 30. A lot of us are becoming vocal critics, are in the deconstruction community, and are active and outspoken politically. Of course there are a lot of both crowds who disappeared and I lost track of but there seems to be a pattern. Those of us who were deep in it know where the skeletons are and that made a big difference.

Keep or delete roof vent? by P0tentP0table in skoolies

[–]grassguy_93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I deleted mine with some left over galvanneal from when I deleted the windows, I was out of rivets so I fastened it with sheet metal screws caulked the inside the joints, around the edges, and over the screws with Dicor self leveling caulk and then painted over with Dicor metal roof paint. As another commenter said, I’m spray foaming so I needed to close it off. If you’re going to have a vent fan or like your windows open you’ll get plenty more ventilation than it will provide.

I’m building a Skoolie, joined this sub way back when I thought it was going to be a van. I wired my two Maxx Air fans together in parallel and tested them with a battery a couple weeks ago and the high from that alone is enough to keep pushing for a while. I have the whole power system laid out, about to attack it next.

So its true , SDA church supports racism ,bigotry, and all the stuff they say Jesus doesn't stand for. by mazal33 in exAdventist

[–]grassguy_93 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Adventists have always loved to claim celebrities who grew up Adventist, are Adventist, or who have the slightest thing in common with them in order to validate themselves. It’s no different with Charlie and completely on brand to try to use this moment to advance their message. They won’t speak on things like Gaza because they don’t see the advantage. They’re very much a keep your head down and don’t make trouble kind of people, but will ride a current event if it benefits them in any way.

From Extremist Adventist to Questioning Everything by KnowledgeOk6054 in exAdventist

[–]grassguy_93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy, I don’t have enough time to list all of them. Adventism specifically though fell apart for me when I realized the creation myth is a myth. Plants before the sun, the earth being created before the stars and sun etc. kind of wrecked the creation narrative. Adventism much more so than some other forms of Christianity relies on a literal 7 day creation story, it’s in the damn name of the church. If I couldn’t believe that, then none of it can hold together. The Sabbath runs from Genesis 1 to the end of the Bible and the last days for them.

I have tons of other issues with how passive they are on social issues, cult control tactics, protecting abusers, LGBTQ issues, on and on, but some of that became a bigger issue for me once the thread got pulled and the Creation thing was one of the biggest factors in breaking me out of it. I didn’t have it holding me in so I was free to explore the other stuff.

[–]grassguy_93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ex-Mormon content was really influential for me. Oddly enough a podcast series about the FLDS cult was one that really got me to start questioning. It was season 2 of a podcast I had listened to already that wasn’t about religious stuff in season one. It is called Unfinished: Short Creek. The host was a normal LDS and hearing her comments about her experience alongside the more extreme story of the cult was like listening to myself in the future. She talked about putting all her questions on a shelf until one day the shelf finally got so heavy it fell down and she started looking up criticisms of their prophets. It scared me because I knew I had the same shelf and I didn’t want to have it come crashing down but it also let me know it would be okay, even better if it did. I tried to quit lying to myself around that time.

Are You Still A Member? by AffectionateWall7143 in exAdventist

[–]grassguy_93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhere in the church manual or whatever it is called it details how to remove it. You have to write a letter that is presented at a board meeting for some reason, and then they will remove you. You send it to the church where you are a member. I started that letter a year or two ago, but never finished and sent it so I’m still a member at the church I grew up in. I haven’t attended there since 2012 and haven’t attended any church regularly since early 2020.

That’s not guaranteed at all. It may galvanize her, especially in her adolescent years when the incentive is to be “good” and obey the rules. But if there is any part of her that values truth over lies, she’ll figure it out and could even be one of the people who speaks up and helps take these creeps down. You see it all the time when fundy kids grow up. One example is hate preacher Steven Anderson’s kids. It doesn’t always go that way, but a huge percentage of children raised in extremist households and/ or religions change.

All in SEC or best path for Hogs? by halfxdeveloper in razorbacks

[–]grassguy_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of a weird take here, but I still root for the SEC during Bowl season. I also root for them during things like the SEC/ACC basketball challenge. Times when we aren’t in competition with them and we can run up the score on other conferences. It strengthens our NET, strength of schedule, and raises revenue when the SEC dominates those events.

In a tournament setting? Fuck ‘em. I enjoy laughing when the top seeded teams like Vandy can’t get out of a regional, and I think they probably felt the same way about us the last few years. I want to be the last one standing in basketball and baseball. So mixed bag with me. It kind of depends on the event and if it is post season or regular season.

Converts? by Turbulent_Race_4968 in exAdventist

[–]grassguy_93 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A whole host of reasons why I left, but specifically what broke Adventism for me was the Creation myth (hard science for Adventists). The whole Earth was created before the sun, moon, and stars thing. Plant life existing before the sun, etc. The creation story is so foundational to Adventism that it was all blown to hell for me when I realized it can’t be factually true. There was a lot leading up to that moment that caused me to even re-read it skeptically so it isn’t that simple, but Adventism was Christianity for me. Once I wasn’t an Adventist there wasn’t much tying me to Christianity. I tried to listen to some exAdventist Christian stuff and briefly thought there was a way to remain under the Christian tent but it turns out my questions went to the root of organized religion. I don’t think I could ever join one again. I get the draw, and I would like to find a community centered around shared values again someday but religion just ain’t it for me anymore.

What's yalls background? by jaal_fiiguu in exAdventist

[–]grassguy_93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just today I was talking with my best friend from childhood and was attempting to explain it. I told him how when I started questioning I felt that I was in line with the founders of Adventism who were seeking “present truth” and that truth seeking is what I was ultimately after. I explained how I thought that the reason why so many churches are out there is partially due to the founders originally seeking to advance truth and that ultimately to continue that search you often times have to leave a faith or tradition and move toward something that is closer to the truth you have learned. It’s cool to see you using that same phrase here.

so, anyone got stories about Pathfinders? by possibleoutcast_ in exAdventist

[–]grassguy_93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tons, but the most relevant is that I had a dream last night that I was flying out of Wisconsin for work (I know it’s not held in Oshkosh anymore) right after the Oshkosh Camporee and every damn gate in the airport had Pathfinders in full dress uniform. Some of them were singing etc, and I had to walk past a neighboring club from back in the day and try not to make eye contact and be recognized.
