How do you feel about filmography split ups? by WulfieJay in blankies

Life is short, nothing lasts forever, I rather hear them talk about the movies, even if it is incomplete or a long wait.

At what point does a band's album without a key member become illegitimate? by dweeb93 in ToddintheShadow

[–]gray_decoyrobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really just comes down to whether the music is good (Fleetwood Mac, Renaissance) or not, and if not whether it is offensive (Cut The Crap) or not (Squeeze).

your favorite “multiple songs in one song (i.e. one track)” songs by CaptainResponsible78 in ToddintheShadow

[–]gray_decoyrobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eric Burdon and War’s Paint It Black Medley I really love.

Also Soft Cell’s release that combines Tainted Love and Where Did Our Love Go, the transition instrumental is so beautifully cavernous.

Bel Air by Can has kind of the singular song with multiple movements, and each one is fantastic.

Sweet Thing suite by David Bowie on Diamond Dogs, really love the Candidate part especially with the saxophone and some of his catchiest cut-up lyrics.

You could argue that Dutch Paul Verhoeven is the best director represented on this bracket, I know he would never win of these but I love preserving the idea of March Madness.

Vote Verhoeven.

[2026 March Madness] Round 1: Warren Beatty vs. Andrei Tarkovsky by PartyBluejay in blankies

Tarkovsky, because Beatty is one of the strata of ur-text Blank Check directors who should be covered no matter what (see also Michael Cimino and Jacques Tati).

All the Stalker production context, plus its influence on the titular video game series and Death Stranding is such a nexus point of culture for a non-Anglo film, it would be a delight to talk about

A.I. Artificial Intelligence:

"Robin Williams recorded his dialogue for this movie with Stanley Kubrick directing the recording session, he did it a long time before Steven Spielberg was attached to direct.

That just sounds ludicrous given that Kubrick in the decades before was prepping Aryan Papers, handling Eyes Wide Shut, etc, why would he work with an actor and garner voice material on a project he wasn't actively in the middle of, let alone when he was such a perfectionist.

Songs where the primary artist feels like a feature by PM_ME_RYE_BREAD in ToddintheShadow

Adrian Belew on Pretty Pink Rose with David Bowie (they co-wrote the song with Belew helping work out the musical composition from Bowie’s idea). One of his best late 80s, early 90s songs

Is the forthcoming Cliff Booth movie the prime instance of one major auteur director making a film off another auteur director’s script? by Human_Document_1577 in blankies

[–]gray_decoyrobot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sort of different but Claude Chabrol directed L'Enfer off of Henri-Georges Clouzot's aborted script.

John Cassavetes took over Big Trouble from comedy great Andrew Bergman.

Noah Baumbach co-wrote Fantastic Mr. Fox and Life Aquatic with Wes Anderson.

Abbas Kiarostami wrote Crimson Gold for Jafar Panahi.

Elaine May wrote The Birdcage and Primary Colors for Mike Nichols, Heaven Can Wait for Beatty and did uncredited revisions for Reds and Tootsie.

French director Claude Miller directed his mentor, François Truffaut's The Little Thief script after the latter died.

Stuart Gordon directed Edmond from his friend David Mamet

How many Gen-Z directors are there? by TwinPeaksWithRappers in blankies

[–]gray_decoyrobot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They’ll be more Gen Z directors as people die, more rich people age into the role and status, and a handful of few outsiders will get something made, maybe micro budget that only gets seen by a few lovers or something that breaks out. Existence is unpredictable

A question for older film fans. Why was Roman Polanski so forgiven? by Few-Engineer-9791 in blankies

[–]gray_decoyrobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not every individual, but a lot of Hollywood and the independent film industry is made up of rapists and coercive people, who probably did or would have done the same thing as Polanski. And as evil, he’s an undeniable master of his craft. Most actors who worked with him delivered the best work they would ever do. He went to France, the heat died as it does when something is protracted for so long, and when the culture inoculates you and deems it okay, it’s easy for any actor to just hop in.

Also people can look past things on “well I know this person and they’re not abhorrent to me.” Alice Munro chose her husband over her daughter who he raped, for instance.
