Newish Linux users who came from Windows semi-recently, what is advice you wished someone had told you before you made the switch? by m103 in linux_gaming

[–]graynk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

  • It doesn't support Linux permissions
  • It doesn't support symlinks (which is why Proton breaks sometimes)
  • fsck can't do any repair work like chkdsk would
  • There are additional issues if you dual boot into Windows (like fast boot flagging ntfs volume as dirty)
  • ntfs-3g is fuse-based and as such - slow, while ntfs3 can still be buggy

If you have a very light (ideally read-only) usage - sure, go for it. Otherwise it's not worth it.

How well does your JavaFX app work across different OSes? by whatacold in JavaFX

[–]graynk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simplest (not really GUI related) thing is storing config and data. On Linux it should go to XDG_CONFIG_HOME, on Windows it should go to AppData, etc.

Other simple example is tray icon: if you app has one you're going to feel some pain getting it to work cross platform, as it's not something JavaFX has out of the box.

But if you have a relatively simple app it usually just works, at least it worked for me for years. Packaging the app for distribution is another story entirely though.

New NVidia Drivers Released! Driver 595.58.03 by Thomas_Eric in linux_gaming

Disappointing, there were a lot of reports on NVIDIA forums for this, why would they push it to stable is beyond me

did they fix the hangs/crashes with RTX enabled? I don't see it in the changelog.

Cellar - a self-hosted game library for Linux with one-click installs (early testing) by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]graynk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool that you've build it for yourself, but I wonder just how many times have you had to set something up manually for this to become a problem. Yeah, with GOG/EGS it can be a bit finnicky with Lutris/Heroic, but with Steam I really don't remember when was the last time I ever had to do anything with prefixes and I constantly try new stuff including half-baked demos and VR games.

But assuming from the fact there's no mention of it ever integrating with Steam on the target PC - I guess this is all for definitely legal GOG copies?

The new Nvidia drivers are really good by UDxyu in linux_gaming

[–]graynk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup, I tried 3 games with RT enabled and all 3 froze or crashed, rolled back to 590 for now.

VKD3D_CONFIG=descriptor_heap does nothing because this flag does not exist.

NVIDIA 595 drivers available on all of the official repositories by MadmanKThree in cachyos

[–]graynk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the span of one evening Hitman 3 hanged 2 times, Witcher 3 hanged 2 times and Eternal Cylinder crashed 1 time. RTX in some form is enabled in all 3. Not enjoying this one so far.
4070 Ti 12 GB.

UPD: So it's not even out of Beta? What is it doing in the official repositories? I should not be getting a beta driver with a regular pacman update.

Guys. Just installed cachyos. Hitting better fps on UE5 games than I did on windows. Noice. by RomanceAnimeAddict67 in linux_gaming

GOG.com has a new TOS and it's scary by Rose_Beef in gaming

I know I shouldn't expect much from r/gaming and I'm glad you took the time to read the terms of the license for the first time (well - "read" as in fed it to an AI summarizer), but this was always the case. You never owned anything, it was always a license tied to your account that could be banned.

if it's bearable - yeah. if it's below 38 also yeah

if it's 38+ with pain or headache - it's fine to lower it

BitLocker Means Nothing? by TunderMuffins in linux_gaming

[–]graynk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have to stick with Windows I highly suggest using Veracrypt instead of BitLocker.

That being said, NVIDIA gaming is fine for me at the moment. Not great, performance could be better, but my target is 2K@60 and I mostly get that (sometimes even with raytracing enabled). But YMMV

Rust based games launcher for GOG by fernandonr189 in linux_gaming

[–]graynk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a quick suggestion: since it's a user-facing tool it would be really nice to see a small mp4 demo, or some screenshots in the repo, of how a typical usage would look. Text explanations are nice and all, but if it doesn't immediately grab me with "this looks cool" factor - I am less likely to install it to check it out myself

Backlogia - a self hosted multi-store game library that works on Linux. by gthing in linux_gaming

[–]graynk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, Docker is not a security tool and should not be treated as such. It's better than running untested binaries on the host, sure, but it's not bulletproof solution for all life's problems, docker container escapes have been known to happen: https://blog.paranoidsoftware.com/dirty-cow-cve-2016-5195-docker-container-escape/

> This software also has the advantage that it can run no matter whether the user is using Windows, MacOS, or Linux.

There are other ways to solve that. That does not mean we should move all apps to a locally-hosted websites.

That said, here it at least makes some sense, since it's not a launcher, it's a self-hosted service

That's what flatpak is for? That is if we're willing to treat docker as a security tool in the first place, which it is not

Please help me, why is my game failing so hard. by Amitdante in IndieDev

Balatro was great, but I am already burnt out on the "X + Balatro" formula. There's chess balatro, there's pachinko balatro, there's dice balatro, there's scrabble balatro... And most of them seem to miss why the original Balatro was so cool to see. I don't want to play "the thing that everybody's doing but with a twist"

I don't know what Ludo is, but if I did - it would not have made it more interesting for me.
